Which is the best operation system for the GigaStudio (running on a dedicated machine - no sequencer or Internet):
Win95-b, Win98SE or Win98lite?

I\'d be very interested in an \'official\' response to this question.
Additionally, is it ok to install the lite version over a bloated normal install, or do you install the lite from scratch.

Hi
Unless theres another version of 98 lite .
When I went to the internet site and downloaded it the only option avalible was to install the full version of win 98 and then use the 98 lite to take out optional stuff to make it less bloated.the whole 98 lite program was small enough to fit on a 1.44 floppy disc.

98lite really frees up CPU. I would love to buy the professional micro version but they don\'t seem to like my credit card...

The free version does not include the 98micro option which really strips Windows 98 down to the bare minimal. You can find more info at their web-site.
I\'m not sure about others, but I find Windows 98 much more stable after removing internet explorer etc and running on the Windows 95 shell. Hope it works for you, mihmar.

P.S.
I see Cheez is using the win 95 shell, just wondering if that is the common consenses.
Also I don\'t understand how the bloated win 98 can be using you CPU when it\'s[internet explorer] not running .
Cheez said you can free up some of your CPU if you install the win 95 shell?
Im not doubting your right , I just don\'t understand it.thanks , Ken

Hopefully I\'m explaining this correctly, but most of the OS was integrated with Internet Explorer when IE 4 was released. When you double click on \"My Computer\", you get Internet Explorer. That came shortly after windows 95.

Rivethead is right. It\'s the IE integration that was removed from Windows - no more \"webification\" buttons when you open up folders. The startup buttons from the task-bar also disappeared (and you cannot add any icons on the bar; the startup menu remains as it is). Other subtle things: cannot right-click on the startup menu icons to delete icons/create shortcuts etc. My CPU resources frees up by 5% when I use the Windows 95 shell. It can be quite painful to those who likes the \"back\", \"forward\" and \"folder up\" buttons etc ... but I can live without it.

When you install win 98 lite, you are given a few diferent options on how to set up your computer .
One is with no internet explorer at all and the other is with the win 95 internet explorer shell.
Im just wondering which option everyone is chosing for the most stable set up.
Also I was reading that they want you to read the whole win 98 lite manual before you install it , is that really nessasary .
If so can anyone that has installed it give us a few pointers , as far as a overview of what we would get from the manual . thanks , Ken

Thank you all.
I will (try) to install the SLEEK version of 98lite and I\'ll let you know it works.

Hi All
I just install the 95 internet explorer shell[which was option 3] then I chose the sleek version of that [which was option one on the next page].
But after I installed it ,if I go to outlook express or internet explorer my computer locks up.So the only way around that is to go to the My Computer icon, then click on my current dial up connection ,then when my motem is connected ,I can click on outlook express[thats my email] or internet explorer and they will work fine.
Is this they way it is supposed to be set up now? thanks , Ken

I found that the best setup for me was to dual boot between 98 lite and another operating system (98 if you like) using BootMagic. That way, I can load all my music/sound apps onto lite, and the bloatware (Office, etc.) onto the other.
I am currently using 98 lite (from 98 R1) for GS and other music apps and seems pretty stable to me.
BootMagic comes with Partition Magic 5 by the way.

I was wondering if I\'m acheiving similar results with my tweaked Windows 98 version as the Lite version (which is $25, not free).
I just went under Add/Remove programs and went to Windows Set-up. I unchecked almost everything with the exception of some Multimedia, Accesory and System Tools.
Beside that, I scoured almost every folder in My Computer and deleted Interenet Explorer, Outlook express, wall paper, screen savers, and other office programs that I never use.
Is it not possible to just tweak Windows 98 (not the second ed.) to be comparable to the Lite.
Thanks for any replies.
