Endicott, your farewell touches a note of empathy in us all.

What, may I ask, did you opt to replace thy ill-beloved Giga?

I\'ll just say that as a new user your post really scared me because as you said I also get a festival of blue sceens many, many times a day.
My Akai and Roland samplers look at me from the bottom of the racks and laught (I imagine).
I do not, however.

I\'ve read some of the frustrations that have been spewed on this message board and most of it is understandable. Those Akai and Roland samplers you mentioned were made and bred from the bottom-up to be used strictly as sample playback and editing machines, they\'re internal components dole out the same routine over and over again, never to deviate to carry out the odd number crunching, game-playing, or internet-surfing task. Your average PC system today is one of the most unnecessarily complex piece of consumer electronics ever created. If it was ever simple at one time it has long ago mutated into a strange, backward-backward-compatible, over-modified box full of discrete components. If you\'re having excessive problems with blue screens and sudden freezing then chances are it is a driver problem. One thing to note is that some soundcards, video and other drivers replace certain .dll files with older versions, which can crash your sequencer or Gigastudio. Sometimes the driver setup procedure will alert you if a .dll file is being replaced but most of the time you\'re completely unaware. By the time you find out, you have no idea which file was replaced with what and where. Start with a win98 or win95 installation and step by step add each major driver (soundcard(s), video, etc) Install your sequencer first and see if it works ok (including audio features, etc) If all is OK try Gigastudio and see if both it and your sequencer can coexist ok. Yeah, Gigastudio is still full of bloody bugs and it\'s sometimes hard to tell whether you\'re having problems with your drivers or if it is the sampler itself.

Regards,
F. Juma.

That\'s the issue though, regardless of the source of the stability problems it makes the whole thing just not worth it. Combine that with a company that does not respond to users in a timely fashion - and what do you get? probably Chapter 11.

I can understand that may be the average user of GS is sharing a PC for Sampler tasks and many others, like secuencer and internert access. In that case I can see a source of trouble.
In my case I\'m a Mac user and my Pc is strictly used for Gs and nothing more. The only thing that I ask for this nice 3K of equipment is tho behave as a sampler, not the blue screen from hell.
Gess what? Still I can\'t.
I\'ll keep trying, because I\'ve made an investment here and I see potencial, like the ability to play samples as long as you want ant to have many of them loaded at once. But as a professional musisian my main interes is make music and not became a computes geek and all of this situation do not help to achieve that goal.

I run 3 PC\'s dedicated to Gigastudio day in and day out, for a year now, with complete stability and reliability.

I know this doesn\'t help any of you with problems, but I feel Nemesys sometimes gets a bad rap in these here forums.

Happy Holidays

They deserve the bad rap if this many people have this many problems with their product and their support. Granted, Windows suck big time, but there are many things they can do to make their product better.

I don\'t know gentlemen. Gigasampler works great for me. I really dig it. Peace.

Works great for me and I\'m running an old PII 450 with cakewalk on the same computer with GS. Sorry to hear of the troubles others are having.

My GS works fine ever since gigasampler version 1.5 Yes I there are some software problems, but none compared to the hardware samplers I had. I run a dedicated PC, and still it\'s a lot cheaper than my S1000 was a few years ago.

I couldn\'t get GigaStudio to work at all when I first got it. I was running Windows 95 and my system had gotten so convoluted that many things weren\'t working right. I finally started over with a fresh hard drive and Windows 98 and Gigastudio has worked very well since then. I have had a few crashes, but no big consistent problems. I have always had prompt, courteous and knowledgable responses to my E-mails with the Nemesys folks.

Hi All
From my experiance ,if someone were to ask me what type of sampler they should buy I would say ,The hardware based tend to be more stable out of the box with no tweaking .
But if my dont mind atleast a intial trip to PC hell with hours of hair pulling and loud screaming, the capabilities of a software sampler like giga studio can be very rewarding.
I haven\'t found Giga studio to be any less reliable than any other PC program like cakewalk ,etc.
When I first got my Pentium 3 450 a year and a half ago ,I went to that no so friendly place under the ground[hell] ,while trying to resolve problems I was having with giga sampler ,cakewalk, easy cd software and direct x plug ins [my complete recording software set up].
I expected to find one problem with my computer that when fixed would resolve all my problems ,well it was actually 4 problems ,and sometimes it takes alot of trial and error to find the source of the problems .
The way I did the trouble shooting was to format my drive and reinstall the OP system , programs and drivers one by one , and after installing each driver I would go back to the program I was having probs with ,back and forth ,one driver and installing one program at a time until I could locate the source of the problem .
Here\'s what I concluded .
1.The drivers for my multimedia keyboard were causing my easy cd program to not launch.
2.Even though I have many direct x plug ins [and direct x should be compatable with direct x]I found that I could only use certain ones because some of the plug ins would cause other ones to freeze up.So it turned out the best combination to use was Waves and DSP brand plug ins ,they seemed to work together just fine.
3.Even when using Waves and DSP It would occationaly freeze until I upgraded from 1.5 to 1.6 giga sampler.
4.When loading cakewalk I kept getting a error message when I tried to open the studio panel page until I took out my intel 740 agp 8 meg card and replaced it with a diamond speedstar 16 meg agp,and now it works fine .
I know this is kind of a long thread but Im hoping these examples will help in showing that it took a combination of changing hardware[video card] software[from giga 1.5 to 1.6] and drivers [got rid of drivers for multimedia keyboard ]to resolve problems .

That just seems to be the state of technology at this time ,hopefully in the future OP systems and hardware will be more stable .
A friend of mine who just bought windows millineum says that it has a great new feature that lets you go back to a date when you know your system was stable and reboot it with that set up.
Lets say you just installed all your programs from scatch and everything is working great ,but over time maybe some files get corrupted from installing and uninstalling programs or what ever you can go back to the first day hen everything was cool and recall it.
So like a step in the right direction.

Well to look on the bright side ,with all
this computer geekin and tweekin going on it seems to be pushing the intelegance level of humanity as a whole and can\'t hurt in fighting off alzhiemers.
The doctors say the best defence is using your brain.
With all this intelegance floating around maybe Ill lear how to spell.
