View Full Version : Is Silver Steinway B same quality as EW Steinway B for Giga?

I like the EWQL Silver Steinway B so much that I\'m considering buying the full EW Giga version.
I\'m just wondering if I\'d be duplicating what I already have in Silver, or if it would be an improvement.
Does anyone have firsthand information on the two?
Thanks,
Michael

Hi,
I\'ve programmed the Steinway Sylver. I\'ve a full native version for Kontakt too.
Giga updates for the full giga version :
www.audiolivepro.com (\"http://www.audiolivepro.com\")
You can update the Piano in Giga and then import it in Kontakt. i don\'t know if the import in 1.52 will respect my giga programming.
The Sylver edition offer 8 velocity layers, with only sustained samples. For me it sound warmer
and better than the first giga programming (1998).
Kontakt\'s Filters are better than giga. I\'m afraid that giga 3 will have the same filters than 2.5.
The samples from Olivier Truan are very very very good. And it\'s easy to work and program this Piano.

Since I believe, that machines cannot play a piano, all the playing was done by hand with a special technique I developed for sampling. This guarantees evenness throughout the range, minimizing of playing noise, and musicality especially with the pedal down notes, where it is hard to find the right balance of the reverberation.\"
The full Kontakt version is ready. I don\'t know if the EW-Steinway B will be updated for Kontakt.
Actually i search one Steinway B/D to sample. (the idea with 20 velocity + release samples). But i\'ve not found a so good Steinway B.
Olivier Truan has choosen one of the best Steinway B from Europa.

Olivier

Olivier,
Thanks very much for the reply and the detail.
Since Silver is a Kompakt player only, I may end up getting Kontakt so I can do some editing of the Steinway, it certainly sounds good to me though, just the way it is.
Even so, the Giga version is enticing and I may get it as well.

Michael

I almost didn\'t keep the Silver version active when I upgraded to Gold... what a mistake that would have been. This piano has become my favorite... thought I am looking forward to the Black Grand from Worra.

Oliver (and all) I\'m sorry for not understanding. My Giga EW Steinway B bought in 1999 is my favorite piano and it would be nice to have access to this sample without firing up gigastudio. If I want this same piano on Kontakt or Silver Kompakt, what do I need to do? Is ew steinway in silver the same as the original ew stienway for giga produced in 1998 (without your updates)?
thanks, and sorry again for my trouble understanding.

You can import your Piano in Kontakt 1.5.2.
EWSQLO-SYLVER Steinway B is just another version of the EW-Steinway B with 8 layers and enhanced programming. (with only some pedal down samples to run on a laptop)

Thanks Joanne,
I haven\'t been following my own topic because I thought it was a \'done deal\', my mistake and I won\'t do it again.
Olivier suggested earlier in the post that the Silver version is superior. Personally, I don\'t know.
Maybe someone can comment on these things:
I find latency to be much less in Gigastudio than in standalone Silver, not to mention VSTi. (My original post didn\'t address this, in fact I didn\'t know at the time that it might be an issue here). And latency definitely affects the way we play/perform/record.
So, I guess my question, revised, might be: What\'s the best platform presently, considering live performance as well, for the original EW Steinway B?

Hi Michael,
I was running the old ew steinway b giga version on gigastudio on a second daw with a very small amount of latency. Because I need a more mobile solution, I bought silver to load on my primary sequencer daw and hope I don\'t run into the latency issues you\'ve described. Once I get things up and running, I\'ll try to remember to PM you with a comparison if that helps.

Hi Joanne,
Thanks for the reply.
With the recent server changes on the forum plus some personal time constraints I hadn\'t gotten around to searching for my original topic very diligently, I apologize.
I know you\'re a fan of the EW Steinway B. The Silver version had sold me on it too, so I just purchased the EW version so I\'d have more programming flexibility, not that I know what I\'m doing with programming just yet, I\'m pretty much a novice.
What may be of interest to you is that my latency problem with Silver is pretty much solved. In my case, with an Audiophile 2496 soundcard, if I set the card to 96Khz with a 328 sample latency I supposedly get a 3 ms latency, and there are no problems.
I don\'t believe it\'s 3 ms, but it\'s acceptable to me.
My system is:
P4 1800 Mhz
Windows 98SE
640mb RAM
Giga, Silver, Cubase
Best regards,
Michael

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the follow-up and detail of SCard settings that improved on the latency. Glad to hear they are solved.
