After all the kindness of all the people here, I decided to share my own giga sample, Giga Anklung Staccatos. They were just recorded in my room but I have kept the noise to a minimum. Also, please let me know if I did the sampling right because I have no experience nor enough knowledge about this area. I just did my best, that\'s all. You can download the gig file from my site:
http://www.nhick.com/GigaAngklung/giga_angklung.htm (\"http://www.nhick.com/GigaAngklung/giga_angklung.htm\")
Here\'s a demo piece showing what you can do with the gig file:
http://www.nhick.com/music/Nhick_Pong_PongV5.mp3 (\"http://www.nhick.com/music/Nhick_Pong_PongV5.mp3\")
This demo song includes sustains which I cannot share as the samples are too large for my bandwidth to allow. The anklungs here are accompanied by PMI Bosendorfer 290.
This is just to say thank you for the enjoyable moments I\'ve had in this forum. Enjoy!

Very nice and uplifting, Nhick! So, how big are the sustain samples? There must be some way to get them posted! BTW, this is a nice--and different--showcase for the PMI Bosendorfer as well.

Thank you for the replies! I must tell you I had a blast recording my first samples!
The sustain samples amount to almost 280MB so it\'s too large to post in my website.
I\'m in a rush for a 7PM appointment right now so I\'ll discuss further when I come back!
Again, many thanks!

<font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana, Arial\">Thank you for that one! I\'m sorry about that flaw. Ok, I spent the whole evening trying to correct this. I have uploaded the updated file with the edited samples. For those who have downloaded already, I hope you don\'t mind doing it again and just save over the old file. The .gig file came down to 7.34MB (about 1/2MB lesser than the one I posted earlier) due to the edits. Same file name, same url.
Anyway, thanks, Christian, for pointing this out and even offering to edit the files for me. If my edit won\'t suffice then I will have to take the offer.
Hi Nhick
really original and fine demo and samples.
Thanks for sharing!
which mics have you used for recording?

Hi Nhick,
I was just find working here with a bad attitude - and you come around here with a \'pick me up\' piece that actually brought a smile to my face. images/icons/wink.gif
Very nice tune - lots of fun. Thanks for the samples - very generous.

Nhick,
thank you very much!
I wasn\'t familiar with this instrument and after doing a search on the net, I now know what it looks like but still can\'t figure out how it is played...
In any case, I\'ll definetely use these samples as soon as I get an animation project! images/icons/smile.gif

Nhick,
I really enjoy listening to your music. I\'m listening to Singkil II on your website now and it is great! Pong Pong Ginapong was a lot of fun too.
Can\'t wait to use the Anklung sample! Thanks!

Thank you for that images/icons/grin.gif
Ever since I heard your Singkil II when you originally posted it here, I\'ve been wanting some anklung samples.
(I really like Singkil II BTW images/icons/smile.gif )

Thanks Nhick
Now I know what those strange percussive \"clacks\" were in Jerry Goldsmith\'s old Planet of the Apes score. Geez... that guy. Always ahead of the game!

I too would be willing to pay a nominal amount if you would burn a disc of the sustains and staccatos. PLEASE consider it.

Another thank you for the samples, but also for enlightenment as to its use. I have an anklung, thought it was just a miscellaneous percussion instrument, but you use it as a sort of bamboo verion of the handbells, in sets.
Never would have thought of that, I only see anklungs for sale individually (Cost Plus) - guess it\'s like buying a one note piano...
Would you be willing to consider burning CDs of the full lib with the sustain sets and offering them for a fee? I would certainly be happy to pay for this.
Also, nice compositions, I especially enjoyed Singkil II.

Hey it\'s me again! I just dropped a note regarding your new composition...
You can do quite a number of articulations with the anklung, but basically, all you have to do is shake it. The tuned suspended bamboo tubes in the middle will determine the pitch.

Thanks for the info Nhick. images/icons/smile.gif
How long can the longest notes sustain for?
I can see so many applications for those samples.
Many thanks

Thank you for the responses, guys! I\'m glad to be able to add something to your sound palettes!

I just used audio-technica\'s AT3035 to record the samples. I don\'t know if it\'s a good mic, but I liked the sound I got. Besides, it\'s not an expensive mic. I recorded in the hallway of my apartment, in between the bathroom and the washer/dryer closet.

<font size=\"2\" face=\"Verdana, Arial\">Carl,
Thanks! This is derived from a children\'s tune I used to sing when I was a child. I just elaborated on it.

You can use as many as you need! In Indonesia, they were used for religious processions. Imagine all the people with anklungs of various sizes, playing an ostinato as they chant! How exotic! Here in Tampa, I have started a community Anklung Ensemble and so far everything\'s going great. I have sampled the anklungs initially to aid in my compositions and to enhance our performance.
I\'ll have to think about selling these samples for licensing. I have no knowledge in this area as of the moment. In the meantime, I just want to share what I can share. People have been so good in this forum: Papa Chalk, Gary, Doug, Franky, etc. giving out fun contests (in fact I just won my own copy of GOS), Tob and his G-Town sounds, Bouldersounds, Thomas\' and Rob\'s wonderful music, King\'s and Bruce\'s expertise, and everyone\'s active participation to help in a lot of ways. It\'s a community based on sharing so after all these gifts, I felt compelled to share what I have too.
I checked my website this morning to monitor if I am going over my bandwidth quota. So far, one hundred and forty seven people downloaded the gig file. That\'s great. I hope everyone likes it. I do want feedback though - did I edit the samples right? Any glitches in the programming? This I want to learn because I have never done it until now.
Again, thank you for being a wonderful community!

Hi Nick, I just played the anklung samples and they are perfect. Well recorded, well programmed and very playable. Could play another tune than your pong pong tune though.
I wonder why you have chosen the method of velocity crossfading using layers instead of the usual velocity switching. Not that it matters much, the end result is the same: a perfect anklung.
D.DiAnda
03-26-2004, 12:17 PM
How were the velocities set up? I don\'t use Gigastudio, and in Kontakt they all showed up over each other (covering the full range of 0-127)... and I got no sound initially. I copied the groups into a new .nki and adjusted the velocity ranges, and it\'s working great. images/icons/smile.gif
But I really don\'t know if I have the velocity ranges at all like what they originally were meant to be.

I haven\'t used the gig files yet. But your music is absolutely wonderful!
Really uplifting, and great, and awesome, and uplifting, and gre....
Thanks so much for posting it!

Thank you!
Dana and Michiel,
I really couldn\'t decide how to set up the velocity levels. Sine I only had four, I reckoned I\'d get better transitions by layering. Tell me if I am wrong. I\'m only \'assuming\' my results so whatever is best, I\'d go with it.

Regarding the velocities... although they are stacatto, each sample does seem to have it\'s own rhythm. I guess I thought that overlapping layers would get a little muddy... It\'s all so subtle, I\'m sure it doesn\'t matter much either way. But I made the layers not overlap at all in the kontakt one.
(Sorry for any confusion.. This is D.DiAnda speaking... I\'ve decided to consolidate usernames that I use in different forums. I can\'t remember why I originally had two usernames here. But from now on I guess I\'ll just be \'Hawkes\')
And regarding Worra\'s offer... images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif images/icons/grin.gif
Also, I\'d be happy to share the .nki version, if it\'s OK with you Nhick. (And, thanks again for this. I\'m really looking forward to using it in something).

Did anything come of Worras offer? These are just such great samples that it\'s a shame to let the post just slip down the list. Pleeeeeaaaase Nhick, would you consider letting Worra host the sustain samples?

I\'m so sorry for the delayed reply, guys. Please give me time to re-edit the sustain samples (taking out the silences). I will be very busy this week helping out at the Filipino festival here in Tampa. I hope to be able to dwell on the anklung samples next week.
Thank you very much for all the offers and encouragement!

Hi Nhick
Some great anklung samples you\'ve produced. Now I\'m also considering to record some small percussion samples of my own, but which pre-amps and converters do you use? I\'ve heard about the combination Neve/Apogee...but those are really expensive. Any thoughts on cheaper alternatives?

Just a kindly bump
BTW - if you use winrar or stuffit then it will be ½ the size

Even then, that would still be 100+MB. Just 50 or so downloads in a day and I\'m gonna get kicked out from my server! I think I\'m going to go with Worra\'s offer if that still stands.
The real question is when will I finish cleaning up the sustain samples! Suddenly I got quite busy with work, driving lessons and a new car I couldn\'t sit still in front of the \'puter these days. I\'ll do my best to hurry it up though.
Again, thanks for the comments and offers!

Jusat let us know when you\'re ready, Nhick. This is really a useful set, and will prove to be a great addition to the world sample libs.
Take your time (it\'s your life, after all) but keep us posted, is all we (I) ask.
