View Full Version : TV shows and films featuring GOS?
I was wondering if the professional composers would be willing to tell us which of their shows and movies feature the Garritan Orchestral Strings. Gary mentioned one show a while back, and on the main forum Chris Beck mentioned using the strings in an episode of \"Buffy.\" Like everyone else here, I anticipate a flood of superb demos from fellow beta testers, but I\'d also like to hear what Gary\'s strings sound like on the small and big screen.

P.S. Let me extend this invitation to those of you who write for computer games. When Ron Jones paid a visit to a couple of my classes at UCSB, he was working on a Star Trek game (Starfleet Academy, I believe). The music was quite interesting, and my students enjoyed looking at his score (a fair copy, mind you) and listening to the sound track, which was a combination of samples and live orchestra. He also played some excerpts from a few of his \"Star Trek: The Next Generations\" episodes, delighting my students to no end.

I used GOS (well, \"Gigastrings\" at the time!) on the last three episodes of \"Angel\" last season. The biggest help the library gave me for those eps was great violin expression, and violin short bows for clear and fast rhythm in some action sequences.
The new season has started up again and I\'m using it more and more. The first episode I used the EXP cellos for a cello line that there\'s NO WAY I would use with any other library. Plus the short bows and again when I really need more expression I go for the full violin EXP patches. The Port/Trem patch also comes in very handy for an eerie, glassy effect.
Also, 22 violins Sordino is another big favorite for use in this show, not to mention the Additional techniques / fx which I am sure will be used a LOT!
Thanks, Robert! I now have a great excuse to watch \"Angel\" (to my wife: \"I\'m studying the underscore to hear how Kral uses those strings.\") I have to confess that I watched \"Angel\" for the first time only a few weeks ago; my wife and I don\'t have much time in the evenings to watch the tube regularly after we get the kids to bed. I don\'t recall the episode or even the story line, since I was only interested in the music, which was quite intriguing and captivating, BTW.

There will be an episode of the program \"Atmospheres\" (Weather Channel) airing for the first time on or about October 17 or 18 that will use music from my piece \"Serene and Savage Sea\". S&S Sea used Gary\'s Strings, and I was putting in the newer, updated articulations as fast as Gary and Tom were sending them out. I used a combination of 2nd violins(beta1) and All Violins(beta2) for the 2nd violin parts.
You can listen to the TV version at my brand new website, www.MediaMusicProductions.com. (\"http://www.MediaMusicProductions.com.\") Since it\'s so new, you may need to use the IP address, http://63.136.85.139 (\"http://63.136.85.139\") Go to my Music for Media page to find the link to the mp3.
I still have some work to do on this piece for my next CD \"Gifts from the Ocean\", mainly reworking the timpani and percussion to my satisfaction. But, there it is for now, as the world will first hear it.
Regards,
Trond.

Pat,
My piece went straight from the FedEx delivery van into the post production engineer\'s eager, outstretched hands only a couple of days ago, and I imagine it will be at least a few days before I hear anything from the director or producer.
I\'ll be sure and let you know if there are any comments about the strings. (I\'m much more likely to hear about the I-IV-V ... ) http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif

Robert and Trond:
What sort of response to the strings are you getting from your directors and producers? Robert: You mentioned that the 22 Violins Sordino is a \"big favorite for use in this show . . .\", so I assume this means that others involved with the show like the violins, as well.

I\'m working on two games right now that use GOS. Unfortunately due to NDA issues I can\'t post music from either nor can I even name one of the games. The other game has been going by the working title Sigma: The Adventures of Rex Chance. It\'s being developed by Relic (the creators of Homeworld) and published by Microsoft. All bias aside, I have to say it\'s a pretty amazing game. I hope to make the audio/music live up to the rest of the production.
I\'ll let you know how it goes...

ps: if anyone\'s interested, I was given permission to post some of the tunes (which were played at E3) on my website. http://www.lionsheadpro.com (\"http://www.lionsheadpro.com\")

The last project I finished for 3DO is called GoDai. They were so impressed by the music (I say its the strings http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/wink.gif) that they are trying to release a CD soundtrack, to go along ith the game. I\'ll keep you guys informed.
It was all finished during the first beta round....and I know I could have made it sound spectacular if I was working on it now.
EDIT

Could anyone recommend who to send demos off to in regards to TV or PC games? I\'d love to get a chance to score a documentary or a game but have no idea who I would need to send my demos to.
Any tips or help would be greatly appreciated. I\'ve got so much music I\'ve composed, but have no one to listen or send it to.

I\'ve just been told that a review of the latest game I worked on has a comment about a few ( I think they say 2) of the songs are fully orchestrated with a real orchestra.....just because their ears tell them so..........well...ok....
There no way that would have happened without GOS.
however with all the other crap in most of the songs.. I\'m not sure how they thought it was.
Still I\'m listening back to the stuff right now and the stings sound the most \"real\" in many places (fake only because I need to go to school....maybe Pat\'s class http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif ). In fact many times the only reason I think they are fake...is because I KNOW THEY ARE FAKE http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif
Damon-
with regards to vid games-
I don\'t know of people that are accepting \"cold call\" demos. One thing you might try is a video Game convention like E3 or ECTS, and handing out demos. While most big wigs and even producers wont really take a listen..or it wont matter much.. Many companies have their Assistant Producers working the floor and the like. These guys will generally listen to anything you give them....however they are likely to be the ones who slam you if they are in a bad mood )
I personally have been in the vid game industry in some form for 12 years and only just recently begun to do music for the past 2 years. Its rally been a long and twisted road for me...but only because I never realized it was possible for me to do video game music until about 3-4 years ago. The 12 years helped out a lot tho...because really to get job somewhere someone has to die.

I have been using Gigastrings on a lot of my recent TV work. While still in Beta form, I used the library on \"Murder In Small Town X\" (8 episodes on Fox this past summer).
I\'ve also been using it on \"Wolf Lake\" (CBS this fall). I should mention that the primary string sound on \"Wolf Lake\" is a very fine group of 5-10 of LA\'s best strings players. The GOS samples combined with the real players have allowed me to create a convincing orchestral illusion, with a small group (using real musicians of any size is becoming more of a rarity in TV,unfortunately).
The nature of \"Wolf Lake,\" 25 minutes of orchestral score to write in a 3-day turnaround does not allow for a lot of experimentation with the library. For the weekly underscore I have been mainly using the full KS Strings, often in combination with the Roland library. This saves time. With the Main Title, I orchestrated the samples as I would a orchestra, and also used some of the tremolo and staccato bows. This was very effective.I have found many of the effects and short-bowings to be extremely useful. The basses in particular have really filled up my 2-man bass section.
I look forward to having more time to get into the library in depth.

Some days ago I posted a message asking whether any of you users of this library thought I\'d be taking too big a risk to use it on a project where the client asked for \"real strings...no midi stuff.\"
I bought the library, used it on the job, which is a national commercial with soaring string lines and warm \"pad\" type writing underneath, and everyone thinks it sounds wonderful.
I was very impressed with the library, and having only gotten it a few days ago, haven\'t even scratched the surface yet. By combining different First and Second Vln patches I was able to build a sound that was completely convincing and saved me having to hire a string section that would have cost way more than the budget really allowed. And it sounds first class.
This is the first library I\'ve purchased that is absolutely worth every penny spent, thoughtfully and lovingly put together...corny as that may sound...I think it was....with a wonderful manual and amazing attention to detail.
Can\'t say enough great things about what Gary and the BETA team have done on this release....thanks to all. I\'m sure it will serve me well for many years.

\"Could anyone recommend who to send demos off to in regards to TV or PC games?\"
I used to code video games a few years back. Back then it was a very competitive field, music wise. The composers who could do a variety of music plus experience producing sound effects were hired very quickly. Personally, if I were going after the video game market for music compositions, I would BOMBARD Electronics Arts, 3DO, Microsoft with cd\'s of my work. I would include dance, techno, orchestrations as part of the demo music. I know for a fact, the more variety of music you can compose the better chance you will be hired. If you want to start on a smaller basis for the experience, advertise your services \"Music for Shareware Games\" in the shareware newgroups. Be prepared to be able to write music in General Midi format as well, because alot of games still use the internal sound cards via midi to play music. Especially the downloadable games. Good luck.

I am working on a film now. It is a local production. Another director is interested in using me for his next film about a ballet dancer. The dancing film will probably use music that is adapted from some classical works.

I am currently using the GOS on a few projects. \"The Lord of the Rings\" special
for New Line and Fox called Quest for the rings. Aring this december.
Also I have just started using them on \"No Boundaries\" 13 ....1 hours for the WB, I also look forward to using them this winter on a cartoon for Columbia Tristar
\"D\'myna Leagues\"
I feel Gary has done his homework in producing a library capable of the flexabilty I need in my score.
