View Full Version : Any LOTR (FOTR, TT, ROTK) mockups?

With the LOTR trilogy being such a kickass accomplishment musically, I\'m surprised to see a lack of mockups based on the score. Has anyone done anything that I missed? Or would the time required be too much for many of the working professionals on this forum? I\'ve played along with the soundtrack briefly, to see if the samples could live up, and they do.. especially SAM Brass. I think doing LOTR mockups would be quite a technical challenge: lots of string runs and fast string passages, awesome choir work that VOTA MIGHT have trouble pulling off realistically*. But without the sheet music, I probably wouldn\'t even try to do any mockups /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Some of the pieces have so much stuff blended together, it\'s hard to tell what\'s going on exactly.
Anyway, if anyone knows of any mockups that are out there... post here /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I\'d like to hear them.
*I don\'t want to say VOTA can\'t do it, because I can\'t judge since I don\'t own the new word-builder utility that came out recently. Maybe it could..dunno..

What the heck, I\'ll post one I did last summer:
http://www.mattsayreaudio.com/ManyMeetings.mp3 (\"http://www.mattsayreaudio.com/ManyMeetings.mp3\")
It uses GOS and Dan Dean Solo Woodwinds. I skipped the first part of the tune and just started at the nice string section. Not sure why I did the piece, was just figuring it out on piano and decided to do a mockup. Always fun to do stuff like that.

I\'m currently trying to do a mockup of the Bridge of Khazad Dum, which is a very fun project as long as I\'m working on the brass sections (using SAM libs), but becomes VERY difficult as soon as I get to the other sections, since there\'s just so much going on that it becomes too hard to identify any particular instrument part. If I could get ahold of the sheetmusic, I\'m sure the project would be much more plausible. I don\'t have any nice vocal libraries, though so I\'ll have to end it as soon as I get to the chanting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Here\'s one I did so long ago, I don\'t even remember when. I just did this for my own purposes and did not plan on anyone else hearing it, but ahhh - what the heck.

BTW, posting this is not infringing on anyone\'s copyright is it?

Awesome job, guys.. those sound great!!
Simon Ravn\'s piece is cool but it\'s not a mockup of LOTR..it\'s his own composition.

Just remembered Simon doing something in regard to LOTR.

I found this short excerpt on Kirk Hunter\'s Solo Strings site:

Also, here is the piece inspired by the LOTR Trilogy, from Simon Ravn:

Here\'s a mockup I made many months ago of a part of \"shortcut to mushroom\". I could probably improve a lot on this one, don\'t care much for how I mixed it, need to balance the volume better too, blah blah. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks, Marcussen, Sam, and fozzy! It\'s always good fun to test out samples against actual ensembles. Some of that musical style seeped into a game I was doing at the time... couldn\'t help it. But that wasn\'t a bad thing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hey guys and gals,
Get jealous:
Tomorrow I\'m going with my son and with Mr. \"ProjectSam\" Maarten to Antwerp, Belgium for a special LOTR concert conducted by Howard Shore himself!
I am so curious how this will be in a big hall! Belgium Orchestra and a big choir, playing a special LOTR suite.

Peter,
I\'m very very jelous. Please post an in depth review for the rest of us poor souls who won\'t be there. Let us know upon closer examination what you learned about technique, orchestration, structure, everything, etc., etc., etc.
Thanks
Karim

No way! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I am just gonna enjoy the concert until I get bored by the repetitions of the main themes, /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Looking forward to some Belgium \"frites\" as well /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
OT: As a side-note (I know there are hardly any Belgiums here in NS), I think Belgium and Holland should be reunited, they parted around 1848. The Dutch lost a great part of the country where the people know better how to enjoy life. The Dutch are always so serious and hard working...) :P

The poor guy did quite well in spite of his nervousness. He did have a few not so good notes, I thought he forgot to breath. I found the solo female singer actually very good. It was a nice concert, I was falling asleep nearly towards the end, hehe. The sound was so, so. Every instrument miked very close and some, like the clarinet, were way too loud. French Horns also need acoustical space. These ones reminded me of the Advanced Orchestra solo horn, a bit like crackling car horns :P
I just loved the event. Next time I\'ll need a Concertgebouw concert as compensation /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Awesome! So what did they play specifically?

Lord of the Rings Symphony in 6 \"Movements\"
(meaning: we were allowed an applause 6 times)
The music followed pretty well the three movies, and there were huge projections of art work from the original advisors/set designers, alternated with closeups from the orchestra and soloists.
We had the pleasure of sitting in row 6 - the sound was quite OK, but not really \"classical\" orchestra-like /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

[/ QUOTE ]The solo female singer was indeed quite good, I enjoyed that part. You\'re right about falling asleep, so did I, had the same problem with the return of the king movie near the end. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Didn\'t really have a problem with the close miking myself, but you\'re definitely right about the volume balancing .. But all in all quite enjoyable.
You have more pics? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif I didn\'t bring a camera. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

AAAARGGGHHH, I\'m so jealous now Peter !! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I\'m from Belgium, and I was also planning to go there, but some other things disturbed my plans /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I\'ve seen a little peace of the concert in the news today, amazing /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
The leadsinger was pretty nervous /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif but sang very nice
Thanks for posting these pictures, I hope you lucky guys enjoyed the concert /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
So ... Hans Zimmer in Gent, Howard Shore in Antwerp, who\'s next /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I want to see John Williams!
A month ago I nearly went to London for a concert with Jerry Goldsmith, but it was practically and financially just not feasible (I have a family with 4 kids).
I really appreciate if NS members can announce new events with famous composers in Europe.
