Hey all,

At the risk of throwing a jinx on this... *sounds of me knocking on wood*

A director in my area called me out of the blue after finding my portfolio online. It seems they are in need of a composer for their indie film, and liked what they heard. I met him in person on Saturday, and we seemed to hit it off. He gave me a DVD with completed scenes, and it actually looks pretty darn good! They want to finish it in time to hit Sundance... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Anyway, my \"audition\" is nigh. He wants to see two sample scenes, and as of last night, one is done. I\'ll be trying to finish up the second tonight. So far, it\'s all GPO, but I\'ll be throwing in a lot of other crazy stuff later.

So wish your fellow GPOer luck. I\'ve been sitting on my butt for 12 years now, and this drops in my lap. I hardly feel deserving, but plan on earning it as I go along.

Oh, and by the way... THANKS FOR MY FAVORITE TOOL, GARY!

Thanks so much, everyone. I think all the wood-knocking might have helped. I got a call from one of the producers last night, and they lilked what I did. They then told me that they had asked for the same scenes from other composers, and I was the first one to \"get it.\" It wasn\'t perfect, but they were very impressed, and it looks like a go!

I am meeting with the director and producer on Thursday to start going over all the details. I wonder if I can scrounge up an entertainment lawyer by then?

Anyway, I won\'t post any footage, since it\'s not mine to post, but here are two early snippets with GPO only. I may be adding in a other elements later, probably including some electric guitar and synth sounds.

Excellent work Jamie!

You are a very \'economical\' orchestrator. Thats a challenge in these days of \'bloated orchestral cheese\' I keep hearing on so many t.v. shows and even \'big budget\' filmscores.

In the sixties, composers doing t.v. scoring for example, had to think of clever ways to get their ideas across on miniscule music budgets. As a result, they produced unique music for those old shows that is considered classic today. That was one thing that drew me to your \"Mt. Fuji\" piece. It has that economical approach in the orchestration! (as do these). I believe you would have done great back then (not an easy thing in those days!) and will be doing great these days. I expect to be hearing your scores in major projects one of these days soon.

Best of luck to you.

Nexus,

Thank you, I appreciate your remarks.

I think I learned economy back when I used to copy all my parts by hand! I got very tired of carefully notating every part in my then huge orchestrations. I don\'t think I ever scored for more than full orchestra with winds in threes, but I used to love thick complex textures. What can I say, Stravinsky was my hero! Of course Stravinsky moved on to very economical scoring as well (Try Agon, for example), and I eventually followed.

There are so many colors and color combinations in an orchestra, and finding them is so much fun. This is the first I\'ve ever written for bass flute, for example, and I love it! You\'re certainly not going to hear one in an orchestral tutti.

Not that I\'m adverse to a thunderous roar, now and then. I certainly still use \'em. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
