Oh well, kind of a boring thread, but maybe it will start some discussion:

My instruments, on a Mac G5 OS10.3.3:

Logic Pro 6 (EVB3, ES1, ES2, EXS24, EVP88, etc.)
Native Instruments Komplete2
Zebra (great Logic Users Group buy!)
Arturia Moog Modular Five-love this one
And Scarbee 73 EP on the way-most likely will replace my EVP88 instances
Freebies Buzzer, Zoid and Crystal

It's taking me awhile to get accustomed to the NI Komplete bundle. What a huge number of plug-ins to learn! Same goes for those in Logic 6. I think that the synth plug-ins will take the longest to master because I'm interested in learning to tweak for my own sounds. I compose R&B and pop music.

Oh jeez, how can I forget GPO, my reason for coming here in the first place? I guess I don't think of it as a VI, but Kontakt is the conduit at this point, so VI obviously applies. I'm still learnin' this one, too. I should have done this during the winter months. The studio tan is advancing...

I've listed most of what I use in the "Studio" link of my site - an embarrassment of riches, for sure.

Primarily, it's GPO through Kontakt 1.5.2 in Nuendo on PC 1 and SCARBEE RSP, WEP. SID and J-everything bass on HALion2 in Cubase SX 2 on PC 2. Everything else I pick and choose what rides on which machine.

What do you think of Cameleon? I've been playing with the demo a bit. Not a lot in the way of presets with the demo, I understand the paid version comes with quite a few more?

The additive thing seems to be gaining some steam and it seems Cameleon is less of a cpu hog than the likes of Cube.

Any thoughts?

I currently use FM7, Reaktor and ImpOSCar and PROMISED myself I wasn't going to purchase anymore (you know - less is more). But, once I saw Cameleon I had to have it.

The presets are pretty good with plenty of template sounds to start you off - plenty of novel instruments that are very controllable. But its when you start to use your own samples that it really comes into its own. I've taken multisamples from the Vitous strings, (all mono, which seems easier to handle at the moment) and made a few patches so I can literally morph between the patches for expression. First attempts have been pretty favourable; more experience will hopefully yield even better results. One thing I'm sure of is that this will all have a big part in the future of sampling for creating authentic instruments that are fully controllable.

Its not just the pleasure of finally hearing a decent re-synthesis engine, its the sheer ease of use compared to all other methods I've tried. I mean, the processes are very involved and brain draining but its been made accessible without the dumbing-down approach that could easily have been adopted. I just wish I had more time to programme it!.

PS: I'm a weak, weak man....I had to have the Korg Legacy as well. A real beauty!. There are just too many great products being released these days.

Thanks for the input. And I agree, I think what we're seeing here may be the beginning of the next big thing. Another round or two of Moore's law and who knows what we'll be able to do!

Wahey, a Cubase user. This is a little off topic, but since you're using version 2.2.0.33 I figure you'd know. I went to download the latest update (2.2.0.35) from the Steinberg ftp site, and discovered there were rather more updates than I remember. There was a 2.0.1 and a 2.0.1.10 and two builds of 2.1 etc. My original disc is 2.0, so do I really have to install each and every update, or is it just the last build of each main 'decimal point' update?

Lougheed
06-08-2004, 06:19 PM
Pingu,

I didn't realize that there is version 2.2.0.35!

I don't actually know if you can skip updates. I would assume that you can, but I've never actually done it this way.

For the 2.2.0.33 update, and higher, you require your original CD media - something to do with the new synths.

My advice is to (a) back up first. I use Norton Ghost. Then if there's a problem, you can go back. (b) read the Cubase forums for a bit, to get a feel for the buzz on the latest update.

Finally, it bothers me that the 2.2.0.33 update is not available! I wonder what that's about?

Pingu,

Read the following thread:

http://forum.cubase.net/forum/Forum2/HTML/066368.html

Thanks Lougheed,

It's not actually those updates that confused me. It's the whole array between 2.0 and 2.2, some of which seem to be roughly the same size, and two of which were added to the ftp site on the same day. I wondered if some of them were cumulative builds or if every one corrected new problems.

Although, if jumping an update gives an invalid message then I'm probably OK. I've made it to 2.2.0.35 without a problem.

Anyway, thanks very much for helping out.

Ned, how do you like XPhraze?

If you are old enough to remember and have enjoyed the Korg Wavestation, then you'll love this baby. That's what made me go for it.

Positive aspects: lots of editing features are on the same page; easy access to modulation; lots of presets; wide range of synth samples; interesting recordable X-Y controller window (like the WS's stick); the wave-sequencing gives this synth a lot of 'motion'.

Negative: many of the presets sound cheezy to me (this will change with the upcoming XPansion sets - I think); the use of 4 layers for some of the presets can be confusing; the built-in effects are not so hot, have very limited modulation offerings; it can be a bit of a cpu hog; programming the cells (individual samples) could be easier.

All in all, I think you're making a good move. They've already updated it (unlike Groove Agent, for eg) with some very useful new features (more filters), and the expansion sets should really make it rock. Installation is a breeze.

Enjoy! :p
