View Full Version : Snare ensembles?

Okay, has anyone tried to do this with GPO? I messed around last night slightly detuning a few instances of the snare samples and got reasonable results. The only problem is that it still seems to phase and I just didn't get the ensemble sound that I was looking for. I did pan the sections as well. The only other thing I can come up with is to slightly offset the notes in the score for each voice, but this is difficult to do in Overture. Just thought I'd quiz you guys to see how you would handle this scenario until Gary releases his 15 player snare ensemble patches in the Percussion for Madmen update later this year. :D

Hi JB!

Yea. Slight to moderate detuning combined with offset in ticks for each new "drum" would be the ticket (until the snare ens). If you have the function to adjust the start time of each track, offset them by 11 ticks or so for each one (maybe less).

Thanks I'll look into this when my head isn't going to explode like it is right now. See, I knew I was asking the right people. I may have to just deal with the phasing in Overture and adjust the 'ticks' in Cubase when I go to do the final mix.

Ye gods, I just realized that I'm exceeding the permissable limits on posting in one night.

Hey 2112!
I have the same GPO lawnmower! I can get my front and back lawn done at the same time if I load 2 instances of GPO. Pretty cool. :D

Hey JB,
Why didn't you ask me to send you some recordings of several snare drums and various pitch tunings?

Well heck, I can't do anything right. Sniff, sniff. :p

Besides my inquery made for interesting conversation so that's gotta count for something.

Yeah sure...that's why I make a point of reading your threads for help!

have you tried also different EQ and maybe some little effect (saturation, overdrive...) to each separate track?

A snare ensemble/marching battery is a good idea for an add-on.

You want to break me don't you. So long as we can get some anvils in the future. Don't mind me, I'm a percussion freak.

I want to second the possiblity of a marching battery add-on for the future. This would be an excellent development! What can I say, I'm a band geek. GPO currently has most of the instruments... I'm just hoping the saxes, presumably, in the jazz add-on will also work in a concert setting. A baritone or euphonium, maybe a cornet, or a flugel is all that's missing, or a sample of a large timpani with the suspended cymbal placed upside down and you play the cymbal while rocking the timpani pedal back and forth.

In a different thread, a few people mentioned rarely heard composers, and concert band is yet another writing outlet where there is some really amazing music out there and the composers are essentially unknown.

I agree 100%... ensemble percussion does have just the slightest difference in sound than the single hits just piled on top of each other. I hope to see this as badly as the rest of you ;)

Marching battery...oh brother. The sounds of hail bouncing off a tin roof. I'm sorry, just can't handle a deep drum tuned so high that it sounds like a Fisher Price kids percussion toy.
However, I have to admit the patterns played on them can be quite clear and interesting as a result of the tuning. What I like is the multiple (tom) drums that are hung from the player in front and played with mallets.
Hmmm, may be quite cool to have.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain! Marching drums indeed...

Oh yeah I forgot. If we going to one day have marching percussion, don't forget the "Acme Whistles Thunderer Whistle". A must have for that authentic march parade sound. (Got one myself Nickel Plate) :)

While we're on percussion samples, how about "strange" samples like bowed vibes, bowed crotales and my personal fave - an inverted china boy cymbal roll on a timpani head while fluctuating the tuning pedal. Those are some of my favorite percussion effects but I don't know any place that has samples of them.

Yes, along with the marching perc add-on, how 'bout some traditional "Northern" brass: cornets, tenor horns, euphoniums and the like?

It never ends, does it Gary? ;)

Weeee Drum Corps!

LOL please don't mind me I just spent a weekend with my former corps the Syracuse Brigadiers (www.brigadiers.com (http://www.brigadiers.com/)) and I'm on my typical corps high.

Styxx had mentioned earlier what's so beautiful about listening to hail on a tin roof (which was hysterical of course :P) but as I was watching Santa Clara Vangaurd this weekend that come up in my head. It's not so much as the sound itself is beautiful (it's pretty stark and believe me, when you're in the corps and you have snares that do nothing but PECK PECK PECK when they have a free minute it gets down right obnoxious...sorry lol) but it's that fact that you can take 7 to 11 guys on a snare and have them play this amazingly difficult part and have it sound like one person.....playing at 180bpm and marching really complex drill....that's pretty darn beautiful lol.

Anyways, for those of you who are into Jr. Corps (and if you aren't, check them out) Check out Blue Devils show this year "The SummerTrain Blues Mix".....they used some AMAZING percussion effects to portray the train like a bellows and actual train rails.....really fantastic program....TIGHT drum line.

Also, Santa Clara Vangaurd has an amazing show this year, Attraction: The Music of Scheherazade" Gorgeous arrangment. I can't remember if it was them or Crossmen but they had their entire snareline play unmounted Crotales along with the bellset and it had the most incredible effect! Their pit is positively stunning this year. Far better than BD.

I'll shut up now about drum corps lol

Yes, I have to admit I find it pretty cool when 11 or a thousand snare drummers play in unison.
Peck Peck Peck Peck < that's funny. :D
