Hi all!

I have listened to a lot (well most, actually;) of the great songs you guys have posted on this site, and also read all there is to read about the GPO, and I - am - so - convinced! Oh yeah!! (Gary, you're a genious :-)

Unfortunately it looks like my buddy through all these years (Logic 5.5 for pc, that is) isn't quite up to the task anymore. Time to move on...

So does anyone here use GPO with Nuendo, or know if it will work?

Thanks,
GPO-fan

You should be able to run GPO in Logic 5.5 for PC.
I'm running QLSO Gold in Kontakt, and it runs great.
GPO is a bit lighter than Gold, so it should be fine.
Did you already try it? Or were you told it wont work?
What's the scoop?

BTW, i am learning Nuendo on a friend's system, and its a very
stable program. You can run all the sample library stuff in it.
Decent MIDI, and a good audio engine.
Best of luck! :)

Nuendo 2 is, hands down, the best sequencing/audio software money can buy. I have used ALL of them, and fell in love with Nuendo 2 from the start. It works GREAT with GPO.

Used to be I'd use Sonar combined with Vegas for all my audio work. Vegas because of it's superior audio mixing abilities.

Now that I have Nuendo 2, I use it as a one-stop shop. It cannot be beat.

I'm curious as to how many screens you are running with Nuendo, rob. I have two 19-inch flat screen Sonys for Cubase SX and I'm lusting for 4 one day.

Also, is it your understanding that the design/implementation team for Nuendo was different from Cubase? And is Steinberg as cheap as with Cubase about providing manuals for a new copy? (Where they only give you this short "Getting Started" book and all the rest of the info is on PDF files.)

thanks ... KevinKauai :)

I can pretty much get away with 2 screens for my needs, although there are times when it gets pretty cluttered.

I don't know if the design team is different with Nuendo -- they probably overlap, since there are many similarities. Nuendo seems to be a supercharged version of Cubase, more geared toward multimedia producers.

I got a big fat manual with my copy of Nuendo, but I must admit that I've barely cracked it open. I tend to hunt and peck until I figure things out for myself or rely on the integrated help. Or go online and ask dumb questions. I hate reading manuals. And, I know, they can be a goldmine of info, but....

PDF files are great for short pieces, but for a full manual they kinda suck. I guess it saves the company money -- and ultimately us -- but I'd rather pay a few extra bucks for a printed manual, should I decide to read it.... :)

I am also running GPO in Nuendo 2 with great results.

Being an orpaned Logic PC user is no joy and without development the program slips further and further into obsolescence. Tom Hopkins, one of the remaining Logic PC holdouts, wrote an excellent tutorial on using GPO with Logic 5.5 PC - http://www.garritan.com/support/GPO-Logic%205.pdf It works, but requires effort and dedication.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Glad to hear that Gary, Rob, Houston, now I'll know exactly which guys to talk to when I've got a question. :)

Exactly. Someone also said that being a Logic PC user is like sailing a sinking ship... In addition, everyone else I know is using either Nuendo or Cubase SX, so I finally made the switch to Nuendo.

I also ordered the GPO a couple of weeks ago - and had it delivered to my door in a matter of two days! Amazing :)

However, I do have some trouble getting everything to work properly. (I did post a thread about it this morning, but since there still is no reply I'll post it here as well. Perhaps either you, Gary, or Looper know something about it:

The thing is; it's only the 1st midi-channel that is responding. No matter which midi track I have currently selected, and no matter which midi channel I choose for the outgoing midi signal, it's still the instrument/instrument group from the 1st channel I hear.

Do you have any idea what I may have done wrong here??

Or Houston Haynes of course might know something about it as well!

Sorry about that :D

I'm using Nuendo and GPO as well. What method are you using for your output? Did you insert VST instruments for GPO, or are you directing them to GPO Studio for output?

In general (and you probably already know this, but just in case), there are 8 GPO / Kontakt players, and each of them respond to MIDI channels 1-8. So, you have to select one of the 8 players in the output, and then choose via MIDI channel which of the 8 instruments within that player you want to hear.

I'll be here for another 30 minutes or so, and then back late tonight. If I can help you get up and running, I'll be happy to do so. Nuendo and GPO make for a great working environment!

Hey, Christopher.

Well, what I did was selecting the GPO from the rack (F11), and then selecting the GPO as "out" on midi track/ch 1 through 8. (Midi in is set to "All midi inputs"). Then I loaded the multi "Large French Horn Section" into the GPO.

I'm not quite sure which method that is (not very familiar with Nuendo yet;), but it should work, or shouldn't it?

Thanks for helping me out :-)

Hey, Todd!

I read somewhere that GPO had trouble working properly in Logic, but that there were some workarounds. However, the workarounds just seemed a bit too much to handle for me, and Nuendo is also a bit more practical, since everyone I work with uses either Nuendo og Cubase.

It's weird, though. So different from Logic, but I guess I'll get used to it. :)

Take care,
Warbler

Hey, Christopher.

Well, what I did was selecting the GPO from the rack (F11), and then selecting the GPO as "out" on midi track/ch 1 through 8. (Midi in is set to "All midi inputs"). Then I loaded the multi "Large French Horn Section" into the GPO.
Okay, let me try to run a scenario by you and see if I can keep from confusing more than illuminating! :)

F11.
Load GPO Player 1 for first instrument.
Bring Up Kontakt player.
Notice that at the top of Kontact player, there are 8 black, empty boxes.
Load the first instrument (I'm a big fan of French Horns, so lets start with them!). This will be your instrument for MIDI channel 1.
Next, and this may be where you are having trouble, we need to load the second instrument in Kontact.
Look up at where the black empty boxes were and note that the upper left of them now has the F Horn patch indicated. Now, with your mouse, select the next black box to the right of this.
After selecting that box, hit Load, and add a Trumpet. This will be your instrument for MIDI channel 2.
Repeat this procedure 6 more times, until all 8 of the instruments have been loaded in the first Player / Kontakt instance. They will be your instruments for, respectively, MIDI channels 3 through 8.
Now, in Nuendo, add 8 MIDI tracks. Set the output of each track to the first VST GPO instrument that we've set up. However, set track 1 to MIDI channel 1, track to to MIDI channel 2, etc.
At this point, we have 8 MIDI tracks on 8 MIDI channels pointing to 8 instruments, all of which are loaded into a single instance of the VST Kontakt / GPO Player (loaded via F11).
When testing these 8 channels, be sure to bump the mod wheel for each as that controls GPO volume / timber. Also, in each of the Nuendo MIDI channels, make sure to select the Channel view and turn up the Channel Volume - it defaults to 0.
Got 8 different instruments? Hope so! :) Now, let's complicate things ever so slightly and get instruments 9 through 16. To do so, hit F11 and load a second instance of the GPO / Kontakt player. Load 8 different instuments in that one just as we did above. Then go into Nuendo and add MIDI tracks 9 through 16. Each of these will be set to the second instance of GPO that we've just loaded. Track 9 will be set to MIDI channel 1. Track 10 will be set to MIDI channel 2, and so on through track 16->MIDI channel 8.

You can continue to load instruments as indicated above. Just remember that for each new instance of GPO you point your MIDI tracks to, the first instrument in that instance is MIDI channel 1, working through to channel 8 for its last instrument.

I realize this is a bit of a long winded description, but hopefully this will get you up and running with the basics. I think you'll have a blast with this stuff once you're up and running. This GPO stuff rocks. And don't forget to share some of your music with us after you've done something brilliant!

Let me know if I can help further, man. We're all family here!
