Let's do something creepy and fun.
Halloween is coming and let's try making some scary, creepy, bone-chilling music.
It can't just be spooky - it should send shivers up and down your spine and cause your hair to stand up on end. http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif
Some tips: Use the GPO harpsichord stops, the organ, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, string glisses, and try adding in some sound effects.
Those who have been frightened to post a demo, here is your chance to haunt the other forum members. http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
The winner will receive a a free GOS sample library (or frightening substitute). ..or is that BE made into a sample library and pumpkin pi. Muuahahah
http://www.garritan.com/images/a-halloween.gif
Please post your trick or treat. Looking forward to hearing your creepiest. This is going to be a SCREAM!

"The Simpsons: Hit & Run" has a really creepy piece of music in the last level. It uses, I believe, high-pitched percussion (celeste, glock., etc.) and a theremin. Normally I'm not very scared by music -- I enjoy scary music, but am not frightened by it -- but that piece just hit me for some reason.

The trouble with 'spooky music' here as I see it, is what constitutes "scarey"?
I used to get scared as a kid listening to Tiomkin's "The Thing" music score with the martenot and theremins.
However Herrmann's "Psycho" still gets to me (don't listen alone!)
Ligeti and Lutoslowski used to unverve me a bit in my teens.
I believe nowadays, 'scarey' means lots of atonal clusters and string effects in the orchestra. Some of this is acheiveable with GPO alone, some not.
If we just want to get scarey in a sort of humurous tongue-in-cheek way, then I'd say GPO could do a good job of imitating those old schlock B movie scores.
IMHO, to get REALLY creepy today, you need to heavily augment your orchestra with avant garde technique samples and ambient electronic 'atmospheres'. I have made a slew of those over the years, but not much need for them myself (I mostly made them to sell as part of a CD library I was making. I also did some for a music library several years ago).
If I could go wild on using whatever, I'd enter something. However, I'm anxious to see what forum menbers come up with using just GPO.

Ligeti and Lutoslowski used to unverve me a bit in my teens.
Dude- The scenes iin 2001 with Ligeti freaked me out as a kid more than ANYTHING. Period. Ever. When I watch that movie at home I still look over my shoulders because I'm creeped out. I love it, don't get me wrong (can you tell from my AV??) but to me the wonder of the unkown accompanied by that music is way more intense than any sort of Exocist/ Freddy Kruger trip.

Okay, here's mine. It's perhaps less spooky and more mischievous, but then, goblins are like that sometimes.
I've had this tune running through my head the past couple of weeks, so I figured since it was a Halloween kinda thing it would make a good excuse to give my new toys an initial test drive. It's a rather crude first attempt and certainly not going to win any contests with all the serious composer talent around here, but it was fun to pop a couple of wheelies in GPO to see what it can do.
It's called "When Goblins Frolic", and it comes in two flavors (light green and dark green) - both are 100% GPO.
64k Windows media wma (low bandwidth) (http://www.ShowProgramming.com/Audio/WhenGoblinsFrolic64.m3u)
and
128k mp3 (high bandwidth) (http://www.ShowProgramming.com/Audio/WhenGoblinsFrolic.m3u)
Hope it entertains you - I know I had fun with it. And if I've failed to mention it, GPO rocks! So much for sleeping this next year... :)

Hey everyone,
OK, here's my submission. Sticking with my film scoring preferences, I wrote a very small tone poem enititled "Ichabod Versus the Shadows". It is basically just what the title says. Imagine Ichabod Crane on his was home from the Van Tassels Halloween Party. This is simply what would go with that scene.
The ensemble is rather small. Here's the list of instruments used:
Solo Flute with Vibrato
Solo Gagliano Violin
Violin Pizz
Solo Stradivari Violin
Violin Pizz
Solo Viola
Viola Pizz
Solo Cello
Cello Pizz
Celesta
Glass Harmonica
Wind Machine
Here's the link:
http://www.jonnylostinc.com/Ichabod%20Versus%20the%20Shadows.mp3
To me, nothing sounds creepier that a string quartet, which is why I used one in the tune. The flute is supposed to represent Ichabod trying to keep himself calm by whistling.
I hope evyone likes it.
By the way, I have greatly enjoyed the other Halloween Demos that other forum members have submitted.
Let me know what you think.
Talk to you all soo,
Jonny
PS: Enjoy that new update! YEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWW!!!

A Date with Freddy (http://members.home.nl/rklaren/A%20date%20with%20Freddy.mp3)
For me, John Carpenter is the master of scary tunes.... just a simple theme, repeating over and over again, adding all kinds of strange things to it along the way.
Although the scariest tunes I remember are Ave Satani (Jerry Goldsmith - The Omen) and the children singing 'Freddy is coming for you' in Nightmare on Elmstreet.
I tried combining the later with the John Carpenter style....
Instruments used:
GPO:
All the string sections (man I love the new KS versions)
2 Organs
Glockenspiel
Double Bass Solo
Piano
Other:
G-Town Stomps and G-Town PianoFX
A female choir (SoV)
Some soundfx I found on the net or created myself
Dim your lights and crank up the volume...... http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

And thanks for the kind words on Goblins. It's certainly not as spooky as any of the other stuff, but it was an absolute blast seeing how easy it was with GPO to turn what I hear in my head into a .wav file.
I only do what the voices in my head tell me to do. Fortunately, those voices are usually musical.

I have another entry.... something totally different than A date with Freddy.
While searching the internet for scary sounds, I stumbled across a spooky haunted house kinda tune, unfourtunatly, I listened to it, went on with my search and forgot the url afterwards...
So i decided to slap a similar piece together from memory... it's absolutly not exactly how the original was, but just my interpetation of it.
Not that that's all such a big deal... but I didn't want to take credit for something I didn't really write myself.:o

If I actually knew anything about music I'd write something similar to Danny Elman's March of the Dead that featured in Army of Darkness (a classic cult horror film). That song always gets my blood pumping. Especially those staccato tuba passages.
"Come get some." - Bruce Campbell
Christopher Duncan

If I actually knew anything about music...I realize this is probably blasphemy in a neighborhood populated by so many gifted and well educated composers, but I contend that "knowing something about music" is no longer a prerequisite to creating a moving final product. Between the GPO samples and the included Overture notation software, you don't have to have a masters degree in music to create emotionally compelling compositions.
Can you hear the music in your head? That's all you need. Listen to one instrument at a time, put the notes that you hear down on a staff, and then move to the next instrument. Then hit play. If something doesn't work for you, tweak it, rinse and repeat. When you hit play and it sounds like what you hear in your head, you're done.
There are a number of approaches to creating music, and each is correct if it works for the artist. Having a wealth of knowledge from years of studying music is a huge benefit. Being a virtuoso on one or more instruments can be inspirational. However, even with these advantages, the bottom line is very simple. In order to create great music, you have to hear it and feel it. And with the tools we have available today, if you can hear it in your head and feel it in your soul, you can make it come out of the computer. It's a wonderous time to be a musician, an opportunity to create without boundaries. Don't let anyone convince you of artificial limitations, that you can't create worthy music until you've done X, Y and Z. The only thing that truly matters is what you hear when you press play. At that moment, how you got there fades into irrelevance as people instead listen to what you've created.
Oh, wait, I'm screwing up all your reasons not to post your spooky stuff, aren't I? http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif Oops. Sorry. My bad. I'll just sneak out the back door here while no one's looking...

Anyway, cool name. I lovingly remember my GameGenie days on the old NES.

[QUOTE=Christopher Duncan]Okay, here's mine. It's perhaps less spooky and more mischievous, but then, goblins are like that sometimes.
Liked it..... do more.

very small tone poem enititled "Ichabod Versus the Shadows". It is basically just what the title says. Imagine Ichabod Crane on his was home from the Van Tassels Halloween Party. This is simply what would go with that scene.

I fall into the frightened category. I've heard a lot of very good music, from a lot of talented composers, since I've been here and it's intimidating. Anyway, my entry can be found here - Scary Entry (url deleted)
Don't expect to hear the traditional sound of a classical orchestra. After playing in one for years, I'm thrilled to make it sound different.
There's been a lot of nice music here; this isn't nice.
Instruments Used:
Violin 3 Guarn Solo
Violin 1 Gagli Solo
Basses Tremelo
ContraBassoon 1 Solo
Cellos Trills H
Basses Sus+ Shrt
Violins 1 Trem
Violins 2 Trem
Steinway Pno Lite
Tuba 2 Solo AG
Basic Orch Pec - All
I'd also like to add my voice to the chorus of praise for Gary, his products and the wonderful tech support he offers. What's truly unprecedented IMO, is the fact that he gives assignments to his users to compete for valuable prizes. There's something strangely Utopian going on here and I hope it spreads. I see a day when Presidential candidates will be promising, "no musician will be without GPO" and "no artist left behind", as their campaign slogans. Yea, I know I'm dreaming.
Thanks Gary, for the inspiration.
Happy Halloween,

This was definitely some of the spookiest creepiest Halloween music I've heard.
All of the entries are phantasmagorical. Today I just got back today from AES in San Francisco just in time to listen again to all the Halloween entries again. Today is the last day for the entry and a winner will be announced soon. And tomorrow is All Souls Day followed by US electiuon day.
Scott, your Scary Entry was frightening. This would be perfect for a haunted house. Your slogans "no musician will be without GPO" and "no artist left behind" are brilliant - you can be our resident campaign manager. :D
GameGenie - your entry was so hideous your server must have taken it down. I wish I could hear it and be spooked.
Looper, I really liked your entry - Creepy fx produced just the right shivers (reverse fx?). I thought I was being hunted just by listening.
Squoze - Sounded gruesome. Made my hairs stand on end.
Styxx - totally freaky and out-of-this-world. Perfect abduction music... wait, we all know you are alien to begin with :p .
Ron - A Date with Freddy was scary and could make John Carpenter get the shivers. The deceptive childlike bells masks something sinister. Haunted Castle is also spooky.
Christopher - When Goblins Frolic - the title says it all - those goblins just appeared when I played this. Very creepy and excellent. Two flavors light green and dark green? Dark green goblins taste better - yum.
Jonny - "Ichabod Versus the Shadows" is spine-tingling. I can just imagine Ichabod having a run in with the shadows. The flute wistle was very effective, but did not help poor Ichabod in the end. :(
Matolen - "Somnabulist Stalking" was not quite romantic yet agitated. I wouldn't want to be stalked by a somnabulist. Very effective music.
FreddyK -Too humorous to be frightening. But I can just visualize Lurch playing the harpsichord on this one. Yes, we all want Morticia speaking French. :D
fmfgs - your hallow1 is ugly music. This is bone-chilling stuff. Wonderfully creepy orchestration.
BelaD- Not a GPO demo but very spooky nevertheless
Perhaps we can make a separate page on the GPO site for creepy halloween and holiday music. I propose we use this music next year in a haunted house or in some sort of production.
What's even more frightening is the election coming up. I'll play this spooky music on election day too. We can vote on election day for the spookiest demo.
Thank you for carving out your best Halloween demos. This certainly was a real scream!

Here's a Holloween arrangement from the late Adam Buford.
Adam was a former forum member who made a lot of wonderful lasting contributions to this forum.

Eric,
I don't know why the poll software didn't make an automatic clickable link. A glitch in the poll matrix. Everyone make sure to siten to Eric's entry. Just copy and paste the URL in your browser and you willl be able to hear it.

This is the first chance I got to listen to these. Man, what a hard choice picking just 1! They are all so good in different ways. After listening to several, I finally narrowed it down to :When Goblins Frolic" and "Ichabod vs. the Shadow". Listening again I picked Ichabod. Something about it just fits so well. Wait, maybe Freddy or Addams or... Oh well, too late, I already voted.

Hmmm, can't seem to remember what the prize was or for that matter, who was the wiener?
Boy, let's finish the boating and dissolve this contest before Rod Roddy comes back to life and moves back to Buffalo. :D

Here it is 11/17/04 and Halloween has past without anyone meeting Michael, Jason, or Freddie. But, seems like we've checked into the old Bates Motel and have mysteriously vanished from the face of the earth! I warned you all not to take a late shower at the Bates Motel! Norman's mother still lurks in the old house on the hill..."Oh mother, look ... Blood! Blood, mother look Blood! EEK EEK EEK EEK EEK EEK ! :D
The question still stands to be answered by all of you who had survived. ?
