View Full Version : V-Stack on same PC as sequencer?

Wasn't sure where to put this one, but for those of you using V-Stack, have you used it on the same PC as your sequencer? If you haven't, can you?
These may seem self explanatory, but I want to be sure before I go and and buy it.
Thanks,
Christiaan

I would be interested in hearing the response from this as well. V-Stack online documentation is very scarce. I would also like to know if it is possible to record straight out of V-Stack. I'm looking into the various VST hosting possibilities and I figure V-Stack would have a hand up as far as performance goes (or I could be wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.)

I`m not sure why you`d want to do that, since V-stack is just sort of emulating your Sequencers mixer and VST capabilities. Its so u dont have to put another sequencer on a 2nd machine to run all your VST(i)`s and FX together. In other words, your host sequencer already does what V-stack does as a standalone. Unless there something u what to do with it that i dont understand :) Rich

I want to run it with a notation software that does not currently support VST instruments. All sequencers do not support VSTi's anyway. I've seen some very good midi capable sequencers that don't support VSTi's.
Surely it's possible with virtual midi/audio drivers.

I want to use 4GB of Ram on my PC - 1gb for kernel and 3gb for applications. Since windows only allows 2gb of RAM per application (but a total of 3gb for all applications with the switch). If I use v-stack or FX-Teleport then I can use 3gb of RAM hopefully (which would be sweet).

Thanks SWL. I use Maple so that should work then.

Christiaan,
Let me know if that works, you`ve got me curious to know if XP will let u do that.. :) Best, Rich

Rich,
I've done a test with the 3GB switch and I can use 3gb of RAM, just not with one application. I was able to open 1.5gb in cubase and 1.5gb in EWQLSO as a stand alone.

Hmmm...Cool!! How do u create "the switch" ? I`d love to optimize the ram I`m using with QLSO..rich

Keep in mind that you can only do this with 4gb of VIRTUAL (paging file size) or PHYSICAL memory, but using virtual memory will slow down performance.
# First, you need to edit the file C:\boot.ini. To do so, make sure that you are logged on your machine with administrative privileges. Then select from Start->Settings->Control Panel->System->Advanced->(Startup and Recovery) Settings and click the Edit button. Duplicate the line under [operating systems]. Change the name between the quotes and add the "/3GB" switch right after the "/fastdetect" switch. The new entry might look then similar to this:
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional 3GB" /fastdetect /3GB
Best of luck,
Christiaan :)

Rich,
Record Producer Pro for one. Voyetra makes pretty good sequencers if all you're interested in is midi.
I am also interested because I primarily use notation. And there aren't any notation programs that handle VSTi's directly (yet).

Thanks for the info, Brilo.... Joseph, i thought i read that the lastest Sibelius comes with a Kompakt player or something from NI. I hadn`t even heard of those other programs u mentioned.. :) rich

Yes, but that's the only one you can use without loading your VSTi's in a host or something. Sibelius is locked to the Kontakt Player it comes with.

Hi,
I'm using V-Stack, the notation sequencer (OVERTURE 3) with Midi-Yoke and EWQLSO GOLD on the one computer - no problems. I normally use up to about seven instances of KOMPAKT. The number of instances depends really on the orchestral piece. If it's using a lot of really fast strings, then you may be limited to doing a seperate pass on just 1 and 2 violins. But no big hassle.
Computer is a P4 2.8, 2 GIG RAM, Western Digital Raptor 37 GIG 10,000rpm Sata drive just for the samples.

For those of you interested, I tried an experiment with FX-Teleport and was able to use the 3GB maximum using Cubase and Teleport (great program by the way).
So many more voices! :)

Christiaan,
happy to hear that!
What kind of latency is usuable with this set-up?
Thanks, Robert
