View Full Version : Just Got RMX

I run a PT HD Accel 2 rig....lots of world class mics....preamps, compressors. Rarely does something come along that makes me go "wow." But RMX has me audibly again and again saying "Wow!" This is quite an achivement that will take a long time to tap into. $99 for the upgrade is ridiculous.....I mean stupid low for what you get. $299 is still a huge bargain. Wonderful Eric......God bless.

SOUNDS FANTASTIC! Definitely worth the upgrade price (even more so when it was free!) Incredibly generous of you, Eric, and great business; now I feel it only proper to return the favor and put out the news to my local music-makers. Even at full retail, it's well worth the investment.

Thanks for your energy over the years on behalf of the electronic music community (yes, I have been authorized to speack for the entire community... ) Your work has given voice to multiple generations of synthesists and composers, and saved me personally from hundreds of hours of sample and/or patch editing to achieve some sonic signature that you had already approximated (or, frequently, nailed.)

And now I can fire my drummer... :D

(Just kidding. I'll put his kit into RMX and show him how I want the part played!)

I also got RMX today, and I'm pretty much floored. :) What made me drool even more is the ability to upgrade with the xpanders - and after watching the tutorial and seeing how ridiculously easy it is to use, I began to bow.

Will MIDI drag and drop work in PT 6.7?

Earthling: RMX is a Loop player/manipulator/constructor/effector with an ETERNAL library of loops that makes my head hurt trying to think of how to explain what it can do. You'd best go to spectrasonics.net and read for yourself.

One more vote for coolest development of the year. I can't think of one feature that users were requesting that didn't get implemented.

BTW, I heard Stylus Classic on "The Biggest Loser" the other night... not that I watch that show... my wife told me... yeah, that's it.

Okay, I dabbled with RMX some more - some more thoughts:

Before I bought Stylus or started using loops, I hated the idea of using loops in the first place. :) I hated the fact that I was basically using pre-composed drum compositions to slip into my music - almost felt like cheating... I recently had to compose a piece that required some interesting drumming, and I certainly couldn't program them myself, so I decided to finally 'get with it' and buy Stylus (classic).

PHAT! :) This was perfect for what I needed, and really made my job alot easier, and much more fun. Still though, you couldn't really do anything with the loops, which was no big deal - but still...

Then, there was RMX (holy music cue). You're able to actually construct your own loops with smaller elements, like maybe a solo bongo, mixed with a bass kick pattern, snare pattern, ethnic percussion, ect. You also have the ability to apply several effects into each of the eight multitimbral parts, like limiters, compression, reverb, phasing, flange, and many others. You are basically composing your own loops and manipulating them in a variety of ways.. incredible.

I'm relatively a super slow learner, but I pretty much learned the gist of this library in a few hours. The tutorial disc that comes with RMX is beautifully paced, uses easy-to-understand english, and entertaining. :)

I'm actually not too much a fan of electronic drumming, so I was pretty interested in the xpander series. After seeing how much of a freakin' breeze it is to utilize the xpander loops in RMX, I commenced to drool. This blows my mind, and can't thank Eric and Co. enough for creating this. I'm sure those who've had to manipulate loops the hard way in the past are on cloud nine more than I. :)

I guess there is only one downside, and that's how much cpu power it seems to take (using all 8 parts with multiple fx on each part that is). I can easily see someone having a seperate machine to really heavily use RMX - but that's hardly unattractive a notion seeing how incredibly useful this piece of genius is.

Not only is RMX amazing, but Spectrasonics service has also been tremendous. They don't take a week to answer emails (next day actually), they deliver on time, and they keep a straight face while dealing with me and hundreds of others. :) By far the most 'professional' library company out there.

Okay, enough worship here. Thanks! :)

You hit the nail on the head Aaron. The light went on for me when I realized you can send each different element to a different send in your host and apply effects (tempo delay, distortion, compression, whatever) to each different element individually. Now I can mangle the loops enough to where I won't hear them in someone else's project verbatim. Add the chaos designer to that and you get even more variation.

It is truly spectacular Eric!. I may just start hanging out with slinky women and writing a lot of hip hop. Which is not to say that this thing couldn't be used in any musical context. I am once again awed by your products Bossman. Expanders here I come.

A note on the Tutorial cd. I believe I have a corrupt file on there. QT movie #11 (edit page tour) will not play. (quick time can not find the associated file... blah blah...) On my mac, after trying to access it once, the disc will not eject... it seems like qt is still trying to find the file. I was forced to reboot to eject the disc. Someone else I know had the same problem on the same file. Would it be possible to post it?

My first, but certainly not last smile, came with tutorial #1... watching you get down with your bad self Eric. :-) That smile and the pleasure you seem to be getting out of your product is contagious good sir. Nice studio by the way. Not a bad place to hang out for 15 hours a day. :-)

and a quick ps
I had asked in another thread if there had ever been any discussion on being able to convert apple loops as they have similar slice data. Once again that would be a boon to those that have a plethora of apple loops. Regardless, I send you a massive phat thank you for sharing this with us.

Confirmed that here too and dropped an e-mail to Spectrasonics tech. support. I think Video 11 must be the one where 'Edit Groups' are explained too. I've sort of got the hang of them by playing around with them myself, but they look a really powerful feature, and it would be nice to see them covered in a video.

I always dread reading manuals. Watching the videos was a pleasure. Great idea for a great product. The translation utility works a treat too. Tried it on 'Backbeat' and 'Liquid Grooves' Akai format and it worked perfectly (worth noting that the utility only works with Akai and Roland format though. For other formats, you need to contact Spectrasonics for what they call 'an accomodation' which I'm sure will be fair).

Awesome!

Steve

PS : The FX sound top drawer too.

Mine is supposed to arrive today.I'm not getting any work done because I'm staring out the window waiting for the UPS truck!

However, I'm starting to see reports of it crashing in Logic 7. Mainly moving any fader on RMX causes a crash. Also, the multi outs are creating a loud squealing noise (in Logic).

Can anyone with RMX and Logic 7 confirm this?

GlennO

Yes, there is a bug in Logic 7 where using a scrollbar in a Logic window after using a plugin causes a crash. Apple is aware of it and is working on it, but there is no fix yet. As a workaround, use your mouse's scroll wheel to scroll Logic windows (cmd-scroll wheel to scroll horizontally).

Multi-channel output in RMX is not working in Logic 7. We're on it and will have a fix in the near future. In the meantime there will be an RMX update which disables multichannel outputs in versions of Logic newer than 6.4.1.

Anyhow, regarding the corrupted tutorials on the DVD, you can find good ones for download at Spectrasonics' site in the "RMX Community" page. You'll need to enter in your serial number but that's about it.

I've been toying with the idea of purchasing RMX because of the awesome chaos feature. I was wondering if its possible to choose individual sounds and create an instrument just like with a standard drum module (you know, Kick to C2, snare to D2 etc). I'm not adverse to using loops but I'd also like to program my own beats using the sounds available.

Great demo video on the site by the way. I hope it encourages other developers to do likewise!.

Heck you don't even have to send it to your host to do that. Within RMX you can add reverb, limiting, whatever.....to any part, loop, element EVEN down to a single slice however you want.

Unbelieveable.

YES! Every single sound in any of the bajillion loops can be quickly assembled into kits in "kit mode." You can save your own kits with RMX and there a bunch of cool presets already. Then with the mixer you can add fx to different parts.....its just crazy.

Hi.

Not only that, but the kits are laid out to conform to GM. And, if you don't like the hi hats in a certain kit, you can go to the hi hat section, pick new ones and they replace the previous hi hats on the same keys; the rest of the kit stays intact. You can do this with any part of the drum kit. Plus you can put the kit in different 3 midi modes: A) Each part of the kit responds to different midi channels 1-8, B) The whole kit responds to midi Channel 1, or C) the whole kit responds to midi Ch. 10. Very flexible.

Cheers.

Hi!

OK - I have to ask....

I have Stylus Classic and am about to upgrade - which I will do rergardless I'm sure it rocks!!....

Does RMX feature mainly urban, processed, 'sampled vinyl' sounds like classic or does it come with a load of nice, plain acoustic kits too?

I love the grooves etc, but have a project coming up that requires a more natural approach and was ready to plump down for DFHSuperior.

Just interested as to whether RMX contains sounds that are a bit more 'dry' in terms of processing....

Also, anyone loaded in a groove control library - I have Retrofunk and am curious as to how easy it all works?

Looking forward to getting RMX thats for sure!!! and adding the expanders.

Cheers Tom

It's still Stylus-like in its approach to sound. So yeah, urban, processed. I would recommend getting the BackBeat Expander for more acoustic sounds.

As for RetroFunk, I have converted it and it works flawlessly! It shows up just like any other RMX Element. :p

I just wanted to chime in as well thanking everyone at Spectrosonics for such an amazing piece of software.

I've had RMX for less than 24 hours, and I've already converted my Akai versions of Backbeat, Retro Funk, Metamorphosis, and Liquid Grooves.

I use Recycle quite a bit on live drum loops, and I'll be able to add these into RMX as well, since it can convert REX files.

This "open architecture" approach means an ever changing, expanding library is always available.

My only disappointment is the problems surfacing in Logic 7, but I am confident this will be rectified soon.

If anyone reading this has not purchased Stylus RMX yet, drop what you're doing right now, and go and order it. This is simply one of the most adventurous advancements in software instruments I think I've ever seen.

Sorry to "gush", but I think those that have it will agree with my sentiments.

From the Spectrasonics' Users Group:

Stylus RMX 1.0.5 is now available. Come and get it:

http://www.spectrasonics.net/updates/index.php

Among the changes in this update:

Working with EMagic, we found a workaround to the scrollbar crash problem in Logic7 that appears to prevent the crash. This should suffice while they're working on a more complete solution.

Also, this includes a fix for a bug that was preventing some users from authorizing.

Remaining open issues include:

A few windows users have reported a conflict with quicktime which leads to a crash. The workaround until we figure this out is to completely uninstall quicktime.

Soloing a track in Cubase SX3 causes a brief pause in GUI updates.

Multi-channel output for RMX is not yet available in Logic 7.

GlennO

everytime I drag a loop into an instrument channel it is crashing logic7.

I hate to sound as if I'm pushing the problem to someone else, but Logic shouldn't crash when you drag a midi file into it, so I'd suggest sending Apple/Emagic the crash log and midi file. They may be able to help you out.
As a workaround, try dragging the loop to the desktop, then import the midi file into Logic.

Sharmy,

Drag and Drop is working fine here, in Logic 7.

I know that doesn't explain why it isn't working for you, but perhaps can help point you to it being a system related problem, as opposed to it being a plug-in problem.

Hope you get it worked out.

Sharmy, it's always a good idea to clean up your drives every so often, I won't try and stop you (but let me know if it works, I have DP crash issues and have been avoiding the same rebuild! :D

This program is totally insane. The price they are selliing it for is a give-away
not to mention the $99 upgrade price! I hope Eric makes zillions.

Does anyone know if it's possible to "unassign" a sound from one of the eight parts? It seems that you can only assign another sound but cannot empty the slot. A minor issue but I've found that when experimenting I keep trying to do this.

Right....I spent two hours at a friend's studio playing with RMX, whipped open my laptop and ordered it. I'm often skeptical of hype when products are released and have furnished myself with points for resisting this sort of hysteria in the past but this thing is simply superb. I didn't take to the first generation Stylus and thought it was rather ineloquent and clumsy but today it was jaw to the floor. And so well priced too.

Now I've got to wait!

Thank you Eric and the whole team at Spectrasonics.

I was wondering if anyone is having trouble saving a Multi in the plug. I saved the first one as "Untitled" But I couldn't save the second one 'cause it wouldn't let me rename it. Logic 7 intercepted my delete key command and erased a track instead.

I read that there are more sounds like single hits and such, I guess my main concerns are, is RMX more geared now to different genres of music, I mean aside from hiphop and even dance type stuff what else and how much of the other styles of rhythms come with RMX. Sorry if I have a hard time explaining.

sbonvallet

Hello Briguy,

As for as music styles supported by RMX, I think it's good if you wait for a few days listening to the demos that will be posted on Spectrasonics website. There are a bunch of demos in so many different styles. I think lots of people will be very amazed and suprised by the versatility offered by RMX.

The grooves might widely cover Urban and Modern/Electro styles (along with a lot of good Funky & Disco stuff) but don't forget that with all the tools available in the instrument, you can tweak, edit and process every single Element (Grooves in Groove MIDI Mode, or individual Slices ie Groove's constituents in Slice MIDI Mode) so easily that you basically can do whatever you want with it. And not talking of the Xpanders... ;) :)

Honestly, I can't see a situation where Stylus RMX would be a wrong choice.

slinky

Absolutely. If it did not come with any sounds at all it would still be the most revolutionarty looping software in the industry considering it's expansion capabilities.

Hi.

Also remember, in addition to the Xpanders that sbonvallet mentioned, you can import REX files into RMX. This basically opens RMX to ANY kind of music style. So, not only can you import any library that you've already purchased that contained REX files into RMX, you can record you're own loops of any kind, use Recycle to make them into REX files and then import them into RMX. This really opens up the possibilities of attaining a custom sound with RMX.

Also, because of the way RMX locks to your host tempo, now when you create a loop of your own material and import it into RMX, first of all it's available to you in all your future projects easily because it's inside RMX, and this loop will work with whatever tempo your future sessions are at without any time consuming problems of changing loop length. And with RMX's sound shaping abilities, it's easy to customize and alter the loop in each project.

Basically, with all the content of Classic Stylus included, all the new RMX content, the Xpanders that are coming, the ability to import REX files and the ability to customize all these sounds once they're inside RMX, the possibilities are almost limitless in terms of sonic variety.

Cheers.

Hi.

There's no offical user group at the Spectrasonics site. However, there is a section at the Spectrasonics website that has videos and info related to Stylus RMX, but you need an RMX serial number to access certain things. My understanding is that this area will continue to grow with more video tutorials and info:

There's also an "unofficial" group at yahoo that has quite a bit of input from the Spectrasonics folks (as does this forum). The yahoo group is:
