Hi everyone, I\'m in the process of getting a new computer and jumping into Gigastudio. I would like to know how many people are using Giga with XP. The tech at my local computer store recommended Win 98 because XP has problems when using all four midi outs. Does anyone know if this problem has been fixed in the latest update? I really would like to use XP, as I would like to use Cubase SX on the same machine, which will only run on 2000/XP. Thanks.

Simple and straight answer: \"NO!\" XP looks nice and all but in the case of GS it\'s not advisible for example it uses up to twice the amount of ram ME/98 does.
Go for a tweaked ME install I would recomment images/icons/wink.gif
since you can virtually put anything OFF in that OS.
Good luck!

XP = nightmare.
Wish I hadn\'t taken Cakewalk Tech\'s advice.
For me, XP has been a pleasure. I\'ve had no problems, even with wide range of software installed on a single machine.

with win98E you can expect close to 1 gig of memory
with xp, you get conciderably less than 1 gig.
Even if you get 2 gigs of physical memory under XP you will be restricted to less than one gig
There is no real reason right now to move to XP

Me has been my worst nightmare with Giga.
Tried every optimization in the book.
Switched to XP on same machine and life is amazing with Gigastudio!!!
Never crashes!!
Me sucks hard!
Ps. Soundchaser sends EVERYTHING out with XP now.
Does that tell you something?

XP works 100% in my setup. No crashes, no latency. Interesting is that I have only one 120 GB harddisk! No clicks, full poly. I use it only for GIGA and midi sequencer. No recording.

We\'re just getting our site up and running, and there are probably a few typos, but check out what we\'re doing with our GigaStudio systems. All our current models on built with a P4 2.2GHz processor, 1GB RAM (standard) and 3 year onsite servicing if you\'re in the US.

And yes! We have a banner campaign starting soon on Northern Sounds.

Thanks for all the responses. I see that most places that build computers for giga are still using 98. Coupled with the fact that XP is getting mixed reviews ( and no one has mentioned anything bad about 98), I\'m going with 98. Thanks.

ME crashes more, has more compatibility issues, and is, in general, a pain in the rear to deal with. It\'s Microsoft\'s WORST OS EVER.
Favorite feature:
System Restore makes backup copies of virus infected files. A system that would normally take 5-10 minutes to clean a virus off of takes nearly an hour because of 5 GB of data in the _RESTORE directory.

The best Gigarig I\'ve seen is using Win98SE (but it\'s really barebone, nothing but the core engine, no interface, icon or taskbar, just Giga loading over an empty screen).
When I saw Gigastudio on XP I was told about a problem regarding memory usage: people were not able to load instruments up to 99% (or near 99%). Some XP-GIGAsystems were not going over 68%, so their 1Gb RAM was wasted.
How\'s the situation now? Have you ever experienced such a problem?
Thanks in advance,
Alberto

Is the XP Home upgrade an upgrade from Windows 2000 only?
I\'m running 98SE and want to upgrade to XP.
The upgrade price is only $99 but not sure if it\'s an upgrade from 2000 only.

Ditto here on Windows ME. Truly the worst POS OS Microsoft has ever put out.
XP Professional, on the other hand, has been flawless. A tad-bit more overhead, but the advantages are so numerous, and the overhead difference so slight, that in my mind there\'s just no question. I would not consider going back to Win 98SE, myself.

Yes, with the WinXP Home UPGRADE version you can upgrade from Win98, Win 98SE, ME and Win2000 (not Win95).
Is always better to format the hard disk and do a clean install.
My experience with XP is great: after several months of crash & blue screens with Windows 98SE I have just upgraded to XP and Giga is working fine now.
My system:
Ahlon 1700+
MotherBoard MSI K7T266 Pro2
512mb RAM
2 hard disk (one for XP, one for gigs)
Ego-Sys Gigastation
All in all, I agree 100% with Lee Blaske: either 98 and XP can works very fine with a certain hardware configuration and very bad with another...

I guess I\'m one of the few lucky ones then, I have spend months and months to fully tweak Windows ME for true DAW purposes, I\'m glad to inform it\'s rocksolid and I never consider to install XP since I\'m stable. So yes, perhaps ME likes intel boards and pentiums more then AMD stuff images/icons/wink.gif ME is hardware dependable qua stability it seems.
