Welcome to the freebies thread! This is designed for cheapskates, cheats, and dirt-poor people like me. If you think this is a good idea, please post your links & requests for free instrument libraries. If you think this is a bad idea, simply ignore this thread and I'm sure it will disappear soon enough. I hope this helps, and I hope I haven't offended any developers & entrepreneurs out there.
I'll start by requesting a high quality GRAND PIANO sample (fully-functional, no demos please). The best one I've been able to find is the Steinway Model C by Soeren Bovbjerg [34 Mb].
http://come.to/bovbjerg
I've also found a hybrid Steinway C / Peyel P190 by Nikko [132 Mb], it's a fully-functional demo, but it has a bit too much flange on it IMO.

The general consensus for the best free piano is the one you find at http://www.soundcreationsinc.com/splendid/index.html which comes in a 136mb or 72mb download...

For my part I think it's a good idea. When making our music or whatever we do with our samples, we use the sounds that works for whatever we are doing at the moment. Sometimes what works is not the $$$$ sample lib, but rather stepping your cat and its tails and sampling that. I do own a number of expensive (or should I say 'ambitious') libraries but I'm still a freebie too, trying to get my hands on as many sounds I can. (I don't abuse animals to get sounds though :D )
A few of my all time favorites are sounds that sounds soo bad that you simply can NOT take them out of the mix once they're in there - they just sound too bad.

well for me, I have a few gigs of free instruments in the form of soundfont, and I love to use strings in my music... I actually was working on this great idea and when tried to use my strings, they were all detuned and I said to myself, "thats it. I deserve better strings." So I just happened to fall into the ultimate strings collection!!! Ahh yes, I cant wait till it comes :)
So freebees are cool at times.
lemme know if you want any specific instruments, I've found some great ones :)

WOW, you guys rawk! I grabbed the Splendid Piano, the NS drumkit and a few other miscellaneous bits. Talk about some worthwhile freebies--worth every hour spent downloading on my 56k dialup connection. I have two more requests that will make my rig complete:
1. String ensemble / solo strings - Whaddaya say, RonC? I'm currently using "Cadenza Strings" by Joe Gunawan [13.5 Mb]. Very good but a little too much vibrato for some of my applications.
http://www.hammersound.net/cgi-bin/soundlink.pl?action=view_download_page;ID=464;Soun dFont_Location_Selected=Download%20Norway%20II;Sou ndFont_Filename_Selected=Cadenza_Strings.zip
2. Hammond B3 organ - I'm looking for something very aggressive, à la Tony Kaye (early Yes). At the moment I've got an organ collection sampled from an Oberheim OB-3 (I can look up the link if anyone's interested), but I'd like to find something more authentic.
P.S. Tomke, I'll decline the cat-tail-scream for now  But now that you mention it, I've been trying to capture the elusive dog yaaawwwWWWnn that I get every morning at 5:45 am. Sampled in 24-bit/96 kHz. You'll be the first to know...

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the fantastic G-Town percussion. Sampled in a really nice ambient space, they blend pretty well with other libs that have sampled ambience (QLSO, SAM stuff, etc.).

Anyone wanting a piano should search for the GigaPiano Soundfont. Its not gigapiano, someone just named it that. Im pretty sure its sampled from the East West Steinway B. Its 16 mb and sounds pretty good with a few velocity layers.
Also, heres a great Violas soundfont. I still use it with my GOS.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but resampling a liscensed library is illegal.

Yes...im not even sure IF that soundfont comes from the steinway. It sounds really similar. it could just be a really similar soundfont though.

The Hybrid Flanged piano is definitely free, and as far as I know, there are no royalties/copyright infringements to worry about. The website is a subscription-based service, but once in a while they release a teaser like this one. Follow the link, scroll down the page and click on "FREE Fully functional demos" and then register a free account. If you like flange, it's a great sound... & pretty huge (300+ Mb uncompressed).
...Which leads me to a slightly off-topic question: Is bigger always better? In searching for free instruments online, it's hard to know what's good and what's a waste of bandwidth, so I always pick the largest filesizes (currently downloading the 63 Mb Pedulla Thunderbass from Worra's site :D :D ). But I have to admit that the Hammond B3 that Kai suggested is awesome, and it's only 1 or 2 Meg.

I second that one...Organized Trio is awesome and for a B3ish emulator, the price can't be beat!

A couple off the top of my head (sorry too lazy to find all the links!);
G-Town
Sam Free stuff if you can still find it. (Trumpet, Timpani, True-Strike etc)
Westgate Studios; http://www.westgatestudios.com/free.htm
I think Sonic Implants might have a few freebies.
Wizoo sounds has some really cheap (and good) downloadable samples; http://www.wizoosounds.com (http://www.wizoosounds.com/) - The Koto got me out of trouble in my last project.
Crystal free VST.
I think you can also search under the term 'free' at KVR-VST.
And dont worry about being cheap - some of these free samples have turned up in Hollywood soundtracks. ;)

I think we tend to ignore soundfonts. There are plenty of places to get them (free). Some of them are are quite nice. Most are discovered by downloading and listening so time has to be invested.
The worst soundfonts I have are the ones I bought.
