Does anyone know how to make a good sforzando-crescendo with the brass? Also, is there a CC# for portamento, so that I can make it apply to only certain notes?

Creating a sforzando/crescendo depends on what way you're using GPO. If you're playing in real time from a keyboard you need a fast attack and some fast mod wheel action happening. In a sequencer you can easily draw that mod wheel data in. Some notation programs will interpret the "sf" & cresc. automatically.
