Expedition is still my favorite. It shows off the power of this library.

Those newer demos don't even come close to that. Most of the time they sound like an incoherent sum of phrases.

The instrument with strings and hammers that is heard at 1.13 in the Expedition demo sounds really good. I still would like to know whether or not it is made with phrases. Nick?

I think that the other demos are quite wonderful actually. I think there are some real flashes in there.

As to Nick’s demo, I think that he is not only a great sample developer, but also an exceptional musician.

I pre-ordered RA, and am so looking forward to it. It is very evident how much work went into this library. This plus StormDrum = the world on a hard drive. Another aspect of this is that it ignites curiosity into the cultures and origins of the instruments. That adds a lot of value for me…

Havent heard it since first release - but I'm pretty sure there are a few phrases in there

No no phrases. That is the Santoor and it's REALLY playable. I also used microtuning on the part.

Expedition does sound absolutely wonderful. Congratulations, Nick. I'll be saving up for RA for sure! :D

BTW, is there an upgrade price for owners of QL Rare Instruments like myself?

BTW, is there an upgrade price for owners of QL Rare Instruments like myself? Yup - you can find the link in the EWQL forum -its a sticky.

I'm sorry I misread - I read the phrase thing as if the demo generaly included phrases. My mistake.

Ordered mine a while ago, and damn i'm looking forward to it. My current project will SO benefit from RA! :)

Katana Moon is my favourite out of the new demos! It sounds like Zimmers Beyond Ragoon.

Nick are all the sounds RA in all these demos? Im sure I spotted something like Percussive Adventures or something?

Great work Nick - I actually put my order in last night, even before this new set of demos showed up - I was glad to hear the middle eastern string section used more in the new pieces - that sound is very intriguing and no one has provided something like that before!

Great sounding demos!

Doug, you mentioned at NAMM you were showing off RA using impulses recorded from the EWQLSO hall I think.

Are you going to make those impulses commercially available? If so, will they be included with RA, or Kontakt 2, or will they be available for separate purchase?

I ordered about 2 days ago, can't wait.

BTW Nick, that Bagpipe Ensemble piece at the end of your demo gave me shivers! It was SICK! Do you have a longer version? If you do have impulses of the EWQLSO hall, any chance you will release it in IR-1 format? Oh, and why the delay? I could have SWORN that it said Feb 28th for awhile. Thanks,

James W.G. Smith

There is only a 10 day delay, that's pretty good in this business which is not an exact science.

Oh, I'm not at ALL complaining, just curious :D .

If you need more time to fix it up, take it, I can wait (gotta build a new computer before I use it anyway). Thanks,

I'm a bit disappointed that Far East instruments aren't well covered--especially Chinese ones, particularly when Chinese culture dominates the Far East. Some very important ones like Gu-Zhen, Er-Hu, Pi-Pa, Suo-Na, Xiao, Bamboo Flute..etc are missing, and you really can't compose in the Chinese style without those instruments.

I believe some of these instruments are covered in the great Heart of Asia, and Silk Road sample collections.

The world is a VERY big place, no ethno lib. can ever claim to be "complete"

Having said that, I have Silk Road, and it has a good collection of Eastern instruments. Or you could try Ethno World 2.

As Nick said, some of these instruments are already included, but RA is a work in progress. There are many world instruments out there to sample, and as with EWQLSO there will probably be an upgrade based on a user "wishlist". However RA is a significant effort at 14 gigs. If you have specific suggestions such as this, please send a mail to ra@eastwestsounds.com where we will log requests (lunatique, please do the same).

Thanks for your input.

Are these demos straight out of box, or were the tracks processed by eq, reverb etc...

My demo used no eq, just reverb, that's it.

as for my demos, i just used some mastering/compressing and some reverb.
i only used one little eq for the acoustic guitar on "the gathering" - that's all.

on "Tales of the world" i used different reverb impulses from the IR1 for the different parts.

on "The gathering" i also used IR1 in general.

@marty: thanks, mate :)

can you be more specific? Is that a Lexicon plate in IR1? Doesn't really sound like any of the halls to me. This lib is looking fantastic to me and I wanna make sure I can get a good sound if I decide to purchase it. Some times its hard to tell how much processing is done to demos. No eq or compression at all?

thanks

Hi Lazul,
no it wasnt a lexicon patch. i just used serveral reverbs for the several sections because i found that each sections needs a different reverb.
i don't remember the patches exactly but on the last part, the far eastern one, on "tales of the world" i used a cave impulse, to let it sound more dark, "stoney" and misterious. on the european part i used a very broad, almost church reverb to let the hardanger fiddle and all the other instrument kinda fly.

on the "gathering"-track i just used a general reverb to kinda melt the tracks and instruments, but i don't remember the patch

as for my tracks i used just some compression and limiting for mastering.

however, i didn't overuse the reverb or mastering. i still tried to bring the instruments and samples to the front, which is, in case of a demotrack, more important than (nearly) everything else

Nick,

That is an awesome product! Very impressive!

And I like the Egyptian theme...

The demo that I listened to (first one in list) was fantastic!

Keep up the good work!

Best to you!
