Anyone knows how its going with that? Meaning when it will be released

Some of the newer Pentium 4s supposedly already support
the AMD 64bit extensions.

Currently I'd prefer Athlon 64s over the Intels for 64bit
operation, as the memory controller of AMD has provisions
for hardware-acceleration of DMA with 32bit only hardware-
devices. On an Intel CPU, the driver would possibly need to
copy the data after the completion of a DMA operation.

There was a good article on those issues in the last issue
of c't computer-magazine (german only ;-) which focused
on the new 64bit technology...

Ok... but wont Intel be releasing some badass processor real soon? I need two new computers, but i'm waiting for the next quantum leap in processor tech

Same here!

You see, I don't understand this. If you need more computers now, then you need them now...! If you can wait for some hypothetical new machine, then you don't really need them. As GS users found, even when release dates are published, there are no guarantees.

I am no fan of the AMD's built in memory controller - it is crippleware! RAM handling is terrible - massive incompatibility abounds. 1 gig simms? Forget about them.
And their 'approved' list of RAM (all of it of the extremely overpriced variety) is of no interest whatsoever.

Don't get me wrong, the AMD 64 bit chips are great - very powerful, and pretty stable. But this RAM handling problem makes me very angry.

It's very simple. I need them - but not like I need air. Getting them will make my life easier and music better... but it does not have to be NOW...

We have build a few systems based on Athlon64s in our
company (with 2 GB RAM) and never had a problem with
RAM there... and I really haven't read about widespread
problems either - actually I have read only praise about
the integrated RAM-controller, as it keeps latency down
and memory-througput up.

So does anyone know what Intel are planning - irregardless of GS3 support - are intel working up some magic, I might I just aswell get an AMD 64 bit? I think ill be waiting 4-6 months

Looks like something I had in mind... any word on how powerful it will be, compared to todays PC's?
