 Now I can finally see (or hear) why it was so hard for the judges to choose I winner, I know I would not have been able to do it! It is truly fantastic. Congratulations to all the winners, and to everyone who entered, for that matter! It's very inspiring to be among such geniuses, I don't know what say. Truly incredible. Wow. I look forward to the live orchestral versions.

By the way, I hope the broadcast will be recorded . . . I am in the unfortunate state of being in classes at the time of the live broadcast. :(

I won't know for certain until after the concert, but Gary and I have been talking about the possibility, and if we can make it happen, I'll put it in regular rotation on the Composer Channel so that it shows up on different days at different times.

I've also made a recent post announcing that the GPO Contest Top 40 Show (http://www.showprogramming.com/TccShowEdition.asp?Show=10&Ed=1) debuts on the station tonight at midnight. 5 hours of great GPO music! http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

I've had fun listening. I haven't made through all 40, but hope to soon.

I hope the top winners all have a great time in the Czech Republic hearing their pieces performed. And congratulations to all of the winners.

I must say that when I heard the winning work I was absolutely floored. Irregardless of what genre the music belongs in and whether or not you like it (the genre), I think it must be admitted that Richard has a commanding handle on composition and his ability to use Garritan Personal Orchestra to its fullest is unmatched. This piece is grand, epic in scale, sweeping, full, and just beautiful. I was geniunely moved by the performance. Just as I would be from any great work.

I was also very impressed with the other entries on hand. Ken-P's especially was a favorite of mine as it seems like it would fit nicely in a Final Fantasy game. His skill at using GPO was also very impressive indeed. I should like Ken-P to take me under his wing and give me some lessons on just how to achieve such masterful midi orchestration. The expression in this piece is to die for.

My congratulations to the winner, the runner ups, and everyone that entered this contest. I can only imagine how grueling the judging must have been.

I just wish I was going to be home when the concert will be shown. Oh what a sad day to be trapped at work.

Any information yet on if the performance will be recorded for those of us that have to work during the performance? Pretty please? :o

Uhm...

Let's get some conversation started folks. I can't believe there's been nothing said about this in the General Discussion board.

How do you feel about the outcome of the contest? There's a long thread going over at the GPO forum about the 'filmic' quality of most of the winning pieces as well as discussion about inclusion of original composition categories in next years contest.

The contest was to show best use of GPO in an original or un-original orchestraton. My feelings are that within the bounds of the contest the winning piece as well the runners up achieved this with great success. The winning piece showed an outstanding command of the programming in GPO as well as, IMO, a great understanding of composition. Regardless of the genre of the piece, Richard Birdsall's 'Knights and Magic' was a splendid example of what can be achieved with the library and was an oustanding composition in its own right.

Lets get some feedback and lets hear your thoughts on the winning entries.

It would be really fantastic if some of the source files (SONAR file, Finale File, Overture File, GPO Studio File, etc.) could be made available. I can understand some reluctance on the part of the creators to reveal their "secret sauce" but on the other hand, better results always set the bar higher and drive all to produce more compelling works.

I think there's some possibility of this and of course, the demo player that I slapped together has functionality for this so maybe I can see what the entrants think of this idea on another thread. Good idea.

I, for one, would also like to see at least some portion of these excellent pieces.

Hi Joseph,

I used your splendid player for the first time this weekend and realised that I hadn't congratulated you on your fine piece of work. The only thought I had was that I didn't spot the transport buttons initially in the standard skin (a bit too well camoflaged for an old fart like me) and also I missed not having a progress meter or lapsed time indicator of some sort, but otherwise.....Brilliant!! I trust Gary gave you a few green ones for your labour!http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif I wish all the entrants would supply a picture and potted history too....don't they want to be recognised, or can't they be arsed or don't they have the computer skills??http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

The standard of the entries was very high and any of the top ten or twenty would have been worthy winners. There are a lot of things to ponder in the selection of the winner and that doesn't exclude commercial considerations. I haven't listened to them all but there probably isn't any Mozarts or Beethovens in there unfortunately. A lot of folk don't realise that there would STILL be an enormous market for someone of their capability. I was hoping that access to programmes like GPO and Silver etc might reveal such a talent. ...in truth it's very early days..........

Film type music aside, all that is happening with 'modern' and experimental orchestral music is that people are discovering tiny niches of strange music that suit a tiny minority of strange (and I mean niche interest) people. I'm totally convinced that if someone with genuine, plain and brilliant orchestral music writing ability appeared then they would be welcomed by the masses with open arms.

Let's be honest, we've gone for a very long time without any orchestral musical geniuses showing. The pop music analogy is the Beatles, Stones, Beachboys, Kinks, AC/DC, Queen, ABBA, Dylan.......the list goes on (but is definitely not endless). The vast majority of people (who love orchestral music) would just love a new messiah!http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

The magic of Mozart or the Beatles is that you listen to a song and you think..... I could do that.....but they are deceptively simple. It's actually bloody hard to write a 'world class' (God I hate that expression1) 3 minute pop tune, otherwise we'd all do it and retire young! (to write more!).

I dont care what anyone says. None of the music written in the last 50 or more years, (except perhaps for the 'Sound of Music' and 'My Fair Lady' etc holds a candle to the masters or has the lasting ability and the majority appeal of the masters. I'm not talking about weirdo minority interest music that appeals to ditto. I'm talking about lasting, majority appeal, great music that will take the majority of the population with it. It's a piece of cake, relatively speaking, to write something to appeal to a minority.....it's bloody hard to write something that will appeal to the majority.

It's like religious sects. I could conjure up a new angle on Religion and you can rest assured I would get some takers......what we want is the real thing for mass appeal. (Sorry if the analogy upsets anyone....it really shouldn't!)

Before I push up daisies I would just love to hear a new musical Messiah.....fingers crossed.....

The performance will be recorded and I'll post a link when I return. Just in case it would be nice if someone could also do a backup recording.

Frank, the masters didn't have "majority" appeal either. They had mainstream appear, but never "majority appeal. And there's not really much on this earth that does have majority appeal - other than things like eating and breathing. You used the Beatles as an example. They didn't have majority appeal. They were very popular, yes, but most people didn't give a rat's behind about them. You're considered to have a hit record if you only sell about one million copies. California alone has nearly 30 million people. Majority appeal is just not possible.

And as far as the mainstream is concerned, well, I'm afraid we're living in a Nascar world.
