...might have to buy a Mac..

You could get a Mini for $500, and justify the expense as a way of testing your products on a Mac for quality control.

For those of us who don't (or are unable to use) GarageBand, is it a proprietary format - or can I DL the package and just load the wavs?

I'd like to have some fun with this in SAW Studio... :D

Yes, you can.

Of course if you have Logic 7 you can convert it into a logic song.

I did. :)

Logic opens garageband Songs

The NIN song comes in an OSX "package" which is a monolithic file format which I am not 100% sure that Windows users can access. The audio files are in Aiff format which I suppose can be converted to Waves.

Once you are done converting the Aiff's, you'll be left with lots of pieces parts which you'll need to manually re-arrange by hand.

Sounds like a big hassle to me!

Sounds like remixing to me - the idea behind the project, no? I'm assuming its The Hand That Feeds? - it would be fun to take a shot at recomposing for it - throw in some dirtorted SID and KH Concert Strings and over compressed MAG and call it a day. ;)

I've got an OS X friend that's sending me the aiff files - thanks guys. :)

I just finished the first version of an extreme remix of The Hand. I need to bring up the beats more, but I'm going to sleep on it before I go back to mixing. I used some Reaktor, RMX and Bram de Jong's SupaTrigga:

Can't wait to hear what others come up with!

You can if you just take the idividual sound files and start from scratch (as I am doing)...

Ned - I like your use of the skip/start/stop vociing on the vox - very LP'ish which the music stays true to compirable NIN tunes of the past. Good job.

How do you get the individual sound files from the dmg file?

I can send them to you over AIM if you use AIM?

I had one of my Mac friends open it for me and send everything over.

My AIM alias is: LastLibs

Here's a quick orchestral version of the song I did last night. Still needs lots of work, but I thought I'd share it anyways and see what people thought:

Very cool Ned.

Could you let us know what you used? Is it all Logic and Garage Band instruments or are there others?

I'd be happy to hand this demo over too them. His studio is like 15 minutes from my place.

Sincerely,

Jonathan

Wow, it would be great if you could do that! If you're referring to the jungle remix, I used Absynth 3 for the bass and the dissonant pad, reFX's Vanguard for the arpeggiated synth, Breakz From The Nu Skool (through Live) for the drums, RMX for the percs and odd noizes. Arranged and mixed in Logic Pro.

Sorry, I was speaking figuratively in regards to my proximity to him. I don't have an interpsersonal relation.

Very awesome. I liked the orchestral version very much

Well then, allow me to respectfully say that I wish you would have written this instead: "If I could, I'd be happy to hand this demo over to them. His studio is like 15 minutes from my place."

But whatever. I do these things for fun, for myself, and for my community (that means you!). :)

PS: In case you're interested, the orchestral version features GOS, Vitous woodwinds, G-Town percs and Stylus RMX.

I'm having trouble with this. Hoping the symptoms scream at one of you guys.

the tune is in A, right? I forget now. I think that's right.

anyway... when Logic opens it it plays it a fourth down -- in E and when the loops are auditioned in my audio editor (in logic) they play UP a minor third in C.

Tempo is set to 128, which is how it comes up in GarageBand. And logic is in 44.1. So I ain't getting it.

something obvious to anyone?

Ned Bouhalassa
04-21-2005, 05:38 PM
Yeah, that freaked me out at first too! The thing that's cool, and somewhat confusing, is that the audio files are in the new Apple loops format. That means that they can be transposed and time stretched. Now, you may note that the transposition sucks the bag. Time stretch, OTOH, is pretty good, which is why I was able to do a drum n bass version.

So... when loading the files in Logic, the files are 3 semitones too high. My guess is that the original GarageBand song is in A, and the default Logic key is C. That means that what you have to do is transpose every audio file you drop in the Arrange page by -3 semitones, and Trent will once again sound like himself (as will the guitars, bass, etc). To transpose the said files, select them on the Arrange page, and just change the +- parameter in the box on the left-hand column.

I wonder how many people trying this remix in Logic are pulling their hair right now! :p

Swell. Thanks, Ned. I enjoyed your versions. I wasn't even interested in playing around with this thing before I heard em. So thanks for the solution and for the inspiration. :)

Here's the last one I'll do. It's by far the most abrasive, dangerous mix to date, so you might want to stay away if you've got a heart condition...:

Don't worry. Everything that you or I have ever wanted to do to that song has been done already. Can you say 223 remixes?   : http://www.thtffanremixes.cjb.net/

Yeah, but only 1% of the mixes there are 'original' --- strap a phaser on the 2-buss and you have a remix :D
