My girlfriend just ordered what she believes is a woodwind library from garritan, as a gift for my birthday. It will be here in about a week. I wasn't at the store when the salesman gave his pitch, and she's not exactly savvy with this stuff, so I have a couple of questions about it that garritan.com has failed to answer:
What is it??? I can't find a woodwind collection by garritan anywhere on the site. Is it a seperately available chunk of GPO??
Is it really giga 3 compatible, as the salesguy told her? Nobody in my corner of the world is using sampling (midi, even) at the level possible with current soft-samplers, so even the music store "specialists" tend to talk through theire a-holes about the stuff. They don't have any demand for the stuff, so they don't really know just what these products are or what they do.
I have no dout that whatever this product is, it is of great quality. The name of garritan carries an undeniable degree of esteem. But I am worried that my poor girlfriend got duped by a know-nothing into ordering a library that may not be that useful to me.
Is there a "Garritan Woodwinds" library? Is it giga-compatible? If so, where can I find out what it contains? I'm both exited about this and worried.
Thanks in advance
Belbin

belbin,
A seperate Garritan Woodwinds? That's news to me. There is no Garritan Woodwind library neither for Giga 3 or any other platform. Not yet anyway.
Perhaps salesman had a misunderstanding or is sending another library.
I suggest you contact the salesman to clarify what was actually ordered. Probably just a mistake.

I don't think so. I may be wrong.
Garritan sells GPO(Garritan Personal Orchestra) and GOS a string library.
Ask Garritan. You can send him a private message by clicking on his name and scrolling down.

Sorry for the fuss, and thanks for the help/laughs.
I read your replies the other day, and just started to get plain angry about not having anyone around me (except you guys of course  ) know what they're talking about. So I called my dealer. He looked it up, and it turned out to be Westgate Studios Woodwinds. It'll take a couple of weeks, cuz I live on a cursed rock in the Atlantic, so in the meantime, can anyone tell me if this set is any good? I don't remember seeing any demos on the website.
Thanks,
Belbin

PS Where is your cursed rock in the Atlantic? Wasn't Jailhouse Rock recorded on the Atlantic (label)? http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I'm thrilled with the sound of Westgate Winds. I think you'll like them. I use them with GOS all the time.

And WSWW works in both GS2 and GS3.
I love it. The performances are quite good and they have a nice, raw, human quality about them. They have a certain grit that comes across well in the samples. They're not as pure and refined as some libs, but, then again, I've never heard anybody call them "synthy" either.
Oh, there are two versions: the original and an extended version. The extended is well worth it, and not too expensive. It adds some goodies like the Contrabassoon, Eb Clarinet and Penny Whistle, as well as more articulations for the standard winds. It also comes with multiphonic effects.
Speaking of the multiphonic effects, below is a link to something I did a year or so ago. It's all WSWW, plus a gig I made from tapping on an acoustic guitar. It's pre-GS3, so it didn't use GigaPulse, and I'm not sure what reverb I used.
This was a quick style sample I did for a student who was creating an animated short. This was for the opening scene where the camera shows the aftermath of a crime in a dank hotel room. I was going to re-write it to picture, once the animation was done.
Unfortunately, the student, being a student, left the assignment until the last minute, then had a hard drive melt down with no backup. I'm not sure how he fared in that class, but I never got the opportunity to put these sounds to picture. Oh well. At least I wasn't him!

In case you're itching for more demos:

I threw that together when I first got it. The wrap-up at the end (0:53-1:02) sucks, but the rest is pretty OK. It shows off the library pretty well I think.
Enjoy the lib! It's a great one.

Dunno about the basic version, but the extended version has vibrato/non-vibrato for most instruments.
