View Full Version : VST's versus Real Samples For The Drums.

Hi all,
I will not mention products other than one in this post but I have to say that Larry' Seyers's Drums out of Tascam, sounds quite convincing. I love to play drums in real time when it comes to the Jazz Genre. The only way to get the juice out of Seyer's collection to accomodate this is to really practice the sounds (kits) that are mapped out on the keyboard. Of course a few tweaks in post production could really marvel the finished drum part.
Thoughts are welcome here..

I believe they are a sample library formatted for use in Gigastudio 3.

Those drums sound really good. And, giga can be used as a vsti. Best of both worlds.

No, Giga can not be used as a VSTi Jose. It can be used in ReWire as your best bet - but still not the same (ie: instrument set-ups aren't saved with the project file you have to save it seperately, etc.)

Then how come my manual says that it can? I'm confused.

Perhaps it says you can use VST effects in GIgaStudio?
That or Tascam has made an update that I'm not aware of. As of GS3.0 it was not available as a VST. Could you type out a sentence or two from the section of the manual you are referring to?

You can use VST effects within GigaStudio, but you can not use GigaStudio as a VSTi within your sequencer (unlike, e.g., Kontakt). You have to either use Rewire or use Giga Studio as a standalone application.

Can't you load the samples into Kontakt 2? K2 has the new universal import, and if that doesn't work, the Chicken Systems Translator could do it too.

No problem, just bear with me when I ask a question that I should know the answer to (which is pretty often :)).

Yeah , i guess you could Zircon_st , now with the built in convolution of K2 it has nothing less than Giga 3 so i suppose it would play Larry's drums as it should . I believe Giga's convolution is a bit stronger though with more flexibilities like mic positioning etc so it wouldn't play the library 100% correctly on K2

I'd be interested to find out if K2 can import impulses made for Gigapulse, my guess would be that it cannot. Larry has said that K2 doesn't have the necessary features to make a K2 version of the Acoustic Drums library, and I'll bet this has a lot to do with the convolution engine.
On the subject of this thread.. Alan, when you talk about VSTi's, you mean something like BFD right? From what I've seen, heard, and read, it looks like Larry's library is the tops in realism. I'm faced with this same choice and am going with Acoustic Drums. The only downside I could find is that with a VSTi you could use something like Jamstix to create your drum tracks on the fly.. but I like playing them myself on the keyboard anyway (must have TOTAL CONTROL!!!!!!).

Larry's GS3 lib looks like it really is some great stuff but I gotta tell you, I am a HUGE believer in DFHS. Seriously, check out the two demos I posted for lyrical Distortion recently HERE (http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/showthread.php?t=34384) and tell me if you don't agree. And they are quickies as well; not nearly as detailed as I could go. DFHS drums really mix like the real thing.
Also, I'm looking forward to BelaD's new lib for Kontakt, which looks to be very versatile and a great deal to boot...

But can it do jazz?
Although the original DFH had a "jazz version" of the kit, the snares are way off from jazz snares. I use the SampleTekk snare for that (the one incl. with GS3).

DFHS has about 8 snares. I think it could do fine jazz since they respond really well at soft levels- awesome ghost notes- but there might not be a snare as ringy as what you might be wanting. The do range from very tight snares to very loose and buzzy, and you can use a snare off kit too. And there are brushes with stirs.
