Well, it's that time of year.... no just kidding.
There is just six months before the deadline for submitting Christmas Holiday songs for the second Holiday CD.
Please post what songs you would like to do for this next Garritan Holiday CD.

Last year's holiday CD was fantastic. There were over 20,000 downloads!
I received so many emails and reposnses from people who absolutely loved it. Some even commented that it was their favorite holiday CD. Thanks all of you who contributed!
Last year's holiday CD had 20 holiday classics. Perhaps we should make this year's collection a multiple CD collection with pictures and graphics.
Let's brainstorm some ideas for this year's CD.

It was fantastic and the music was superb. I can't wait to be involved again this year!
And we'll have so many new users around by then. Maybe a 2 disc set isn't that bad an idea.

I know that I will be contributing. A Holiday CD is one of those things I am planning on doing for a family Christmas Present this year.
Hopefully there will be something I can do that will be good for the GPO one.

I'd be honored to contribute something myself... I gather that the submissions should be arrangements of existing Christmas tunes, not original Christmas-y compositions... is that correct?

I have a couple of original Christmas songs. I just got studio recordings made of them with voice and piano. One of them is orchestrated, and I plan to do the other one as well. It might be possible to seperate out the vocal track and mix it with a GPO mock up of the orchestration.
If that doesn't work, I dibs "In Dulci Jubilo" this year.

Someone needs to make sure that Carol of the Bells gets done. That's the one tune that was missing from last years CD that I thought should have been there. If nobody wants to do it, I will. I'll take one for the team! :D

Do you have to use Garritan samples?
I finished up a Christmas CD, and I would love to submit one of the tracks. I think I used Garriton lite on one of them. . ., but that's about it.
Where is the list of last years songs so I dont duplicate....I would like to do "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"

Last Christmas's CD was wonderful! It really put me in the Christmas mood, it was an excellent idea and the contributions were superb.
I'd love to contribute to the next one. However, I wonder if we are running out of classic Christmas tunes that are in public domain . . .
A multiple CD collection might be a must, as I expect there will be many contributions! :)

Hi Sporter, I am not the one to make the rules, thank goodness :)
I imagine Gary will pop in and fill us in. My guess is that since this is a Garritan Holiday CD, most of the sounds should be from Garritan's libraries. To use mostly someone else's libraries and a flute from GPO kinda defeats part of the purpose of the Garritan libraries Christmas Holiday CD, in my opinion anyway.
Your thoughts Gary?
I wanted to do Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire so bad, and it was not public domain, so I paid Harry Fox Agency and got permission by buying the rights to use it.
Maybe Gary could fill us in there too?

I think the deadline we used last year was the last week in November.
There has to be enough time for mastering, replication and mailing so that the CD's can be enjoyed by folks during the holidays.

Have been quiet for a while but I just saw this thread. I would love to take part in this (if you are happy with entries from the UK).
I fancy orchestrating Once In Royal David's City. It wasn't on the CD last year and it is one of my favourites.
I should be able to complete it for October, as long as the deadline is the end of October.

Well, looks like something original for me as everyone seems to have taken the ones I've already started. Looks like I'll be motivated even more :)
A good friend of mine has consented to record a Christmas narrative (ex-radio guy that he is) and I'm going to compose/score against it. Any objections for the powers that be for this? Obviously the same copyright rules apply to the narrative as copyrighted songs.
Let me know what you think...

Well, after an intensive search, I found that "I'll Be Home For Christmas" was one of the most often requested Holiday songs during WWII.
It was written (lyrics) by J. Kimball "Kim" Gannon who was a graduate of St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. Seems that when Kim died he assigned the royalties to his wife and she passed them on to St. Lawrence Univ. and it won't be in PD until about 2067.
I guess that about wraps up my entry.....
DPDAN: please delete my entry. I'll try for another traditional one.
I received this info by inserting "History of I'll Be Home For Christmas" in Google. Anyone interested in their entry's PD question might try Google to see if they can ascertain their PD position........as I did.
As a guide, it seems that songs written before 1922 are most likely in PD, but the last time I checked the copyright law it stated that a song is NOT in PD until the composer/lyricist has been deceased PLUS 50 years.
Thanks,
Jack

I have a question:
I am pretty much done with my piece (was noodling around and it came together pretty quickly so I felt I needed to pursue it rather than put it off)
Anyways, is there a suggested time limit? I can't imagine "Flambeau" being more than 2 mins. 30 secs max. But I thought I'd ask.

Well, the only Christmas thing I have ever done is one that I did yesterday, after being bitten by the Burgundian Bug. "Fantasy Impromptu for Organ on a Burgundian Carol" , the carol being Pat-A-Pan. I offer this for inclusion, having already been told by Paula that she would not consider it treading on her musical toes. There is a link on the demos, midi page.
Length is 3' 23"

Wow! The list filled up fast! I like Jerry W.'s idea of doing a set of tunes for family and friends as a holiday gift, but for this project put me down for:
It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
I have a question, however.
I found a public domain arrangement of this tune that I'd like to use. Is there any restriction against that for this project, or is it understood that you start with just the melody, and build your own arrangement from that?

Is there still time to submit? I'd like to contribute an original piece titled "Snow Travel" if there is still time. Can we use a couple of non-Garritan samples? Just a few? I started this piece long before I had GPO but have since converted many of the samples to GPO. I'd love to have a reason to get this piece finished soon.

Hi Eric!
I think that as long as it is predominantly GPO, you are fine. I have a piece I wrote five years ago that is going to HOPEFULLY be on it and it has a non-GPO piano that was part of the original recording. (an SATB choir piece with piano that I orchestrated with GPO this month).
This might have to turn out to be a double CD - I hope so. The more the merrier!! :P

Well, it seems you have already satured the whole repertory...but not in Europe yet... :D
So I still have something to propose:
- "Tu scendi dalle stelle", the most popular Italian Noel, it's a very simple and popular melody, a challenge to enlight his natural beuty with the right orchestration.
- "Oh Tannenbaum", a so inspiring German melody, really good for orchestral development.
- "Il est nč" and "Entre le beuf et l'ane gris" two French nice tunes, also good for development.
I will tell you soon what I decide to make.

MovieMaestro:
The Melody in the last part of the first carol is not one I sang in church. It may be an offshoot of the popular carol, but, in my opinion, is too much of ONE NOTE (mono-tonal). Better check that out. The second arrangement has a strange meter in my opinion, but it can be written that way. Just want to caution you before you jump in.
Maybe your public library will have a book of carols or at least some kind of church hymnal that you can use to compare the first two examples with.

Hi Everyone,
I need help please. Can someone please forward the sheet music for "We Three Kings" to me...the more simplistic the better please. My husband says that I'm doing it wrong, and he's probably right. Any help would be appreciated!!
Thanks!

The link Drumroll provided IS the most popular version of this carol (in my opinion). Funny it's missing a time signature, but you know it is in 3/8 time.
If it was me doing this carol for widespread play on a CD, I would go with Drumroll's selection. Just trying to get you fixed on a version so you can get started with GPO. Go get 'em Steph............

Why not just make it a high quality MP3? (256 kbps should do the trick)
If the music is good enough, the audience won't have time searching for audio imperfections :)
DPDAN
09-29-2005, 02:50 PM
Aziraphal,
As you probably know, the lower the rate of an MP3, the more grainy and ugly the sound is. An audio CD is going to allow the maximum quality of sound at 44.1khz.
Most folks listening to the final product will be listening for the sheer enjoyment of the music and production of it, especially since most listeners are Garritan Sample Library users. If someone wanted to take the time searching for audio imperfections, as many will..... they will find them, and many folks won't have to search, the imperfections will stand out on their own. Lowering the sample rate of the MP3 will not cover up or diminish the ability for a bad mix or some sloppy midi editing to be heard.
If I were sending my piece of music to be put on a CD along with others, I would want my song to be heard with the maximum quality that is acheivable.
Just my response to your post of 256 being "good enough" :)
Please feel free to send in what ever format you wish.
I realize that your post is only a suggestion, but I think suggesting that sending in an MP3 @ 256kbps instead of an Audio CD, is not ideal in the interest of maximum fidelity. Hopefully I have not discouraged anyone from participating because of the requested format.

Ok no problem with me, just wondering :)
But just maybe - in case there is a selection among entries - we should first send the MP3's to be reviewed by the bosses, and send the CD's upon confirmation.
I certainly plan to participate - there's lots of old and beautiful Slovenian Xmas songs the world should hear about.

Finished my arrangement of Hark! The Herald Angels Sing this weekend, and got what was a pretty good mix, I thought, but then I burned a CD and tried listening on the stereo. Urgh. Back to the drawing board--computer speakers aren't a good example of what the thing will really sound like, it seems. Substantially need to boost the bass, in particular, and pull back the trumpets. So there's more tinkering (and more CD-R coasters to be made in the testing process) to come. But should have it ready in a week or so. Maybe I can run a cable from the computer over to the stereo for testing purposes.

I started playing with my proposal, to find out ideas.
Then i decided to stay on "Tu scendi dalle stelle" because even if it's very simple, and then difficoult to develope in an interesting way, it's anyway the most Italian Christmas song, and I wont to let you have it as a sample of my country popular music.
the melody and lyrics (http://praiseofglory.com/redemptorist/tuscendi.htm)
I just finished the project layout, overall structure, development and harmonization, strings overall parts.
Now I move to whole orchestration and finally mixing and recording: I suppose in a week it will be finished.
I hope the result will be good enough to be heard beside the other great works I'm certain will be included in the list: it's my little personal challenge. :o

Sorry about the Cardinals...NOT!!! I have never forgiven them for beating the Yankees in 1964, and I never will. But I did see the game in which Mickey Mantle hit a walkoff homer against Barney Schultz. I am really not a die hard fan of sports, but when the Cardinals are doing really well (which is most of the time) I do watch, I'm a part time fan. Did you happen to see the 8th inning of their last game in Houston when Albert P hit that home run and drove in three runs to win the game?
That was great!
Thanks Jim! :)

I even put a few seconds of silence at the front of this mix (an inadvertant tribute to John Cage - that's my story and I'm sticking with it :) ).
I've got a bunch of little stuff to work out on this (including mixing it), but I should have no problem completing it by the deadline (and I can post the WAV file to my site, so we don't have to worry about mail).

That's the approach I'm taking with "Here we come a wassailing" You can still recognize the theme, but you probably wouldn't be able to sing along :D
Similar to my approach with O Holy Night, except that I'm experimenting with the accompaniment that takes it different places than the original dictated :) Should be fun. I know I'm having fun!

Wow! That's a lot of holiday music. Looking forward to enjoying the holidays with your music.
We are now at the point where the music will no longer fit on a CD and need to make some decisions. If more than one song was submitted we may have to choose just one. Also, we now need to close the submissions.
The only way around this is to may an MP3 CD. Many CDs read mp3s or you can burn an audio CD from MP3s. Would you be in favor of this or would you prefer a typical audio CD?
Thanks all for participating and thanks to Dan Kury for making this happen. This is going to be a happy holiday season with this music.

How about double CD? :D
A double CD is way more expensive for Gary since he is graciously paying for all this, and there is not enough material to fill a second CD.
A huge thanks to Gary for this wonderful opportunity for our music to get into so many homes.

If we narrow it to one selection per submitter can we make it onto one CD? If not, MP3 CD is okay by me as long as the bit rate is still high - like 192+...
SeanHannifin
11-01-2005, 08:08 PM
You could narrow down the selections to fit on one "mail-out" CD, and then have the "extended edition" as an online download, allowing listener's to burn their own CD's from the other tracks . . . just as last year's is available for download.
I think an MP3 CD is also a good idea, allowing for more songs on one CD, and would be playable even on many DVD players . . .
Fedora's off to Gary and Dan!! :D I sure am looking forward to Christmas!
SeanHannifin
11-01-2005, 08:10 PM
Also, if you want to make a second CD but don't have enough to fill it, I'd be happy to compose another extended edition of my Bolero for Piano. :)

if there is not enough room on the cd i would not be offended if my submission were omitted. i was one of the last to sign up for it and my arrangement of the traditional irish christmas carol, Dom Oiche Úd i mBeithil, is, i think. more traditional irish than traditional christmas.
on the other hand if additional matieirial for a second cd is needed i do have a recording of another traditional irish carol, The Enniscorthy Carol, which is much more christmassy, although it has already been covered by Snorlax.

Gary- I think the most universally acceptable solution would be for you or Dan to act as Producer here, and trim the selections down to make the best standard Red book compliant CD possible, playable in all CD players, and then have all selections available for download as mp3 files, similar to last year.

I'm inclined to agree that Redbook CD is the way to go on this since I expect many of these are destined for family & friends who may not have an mp3 player.
I do like the idea of an 'extended edition' available for download too though.

Here is another vote for red book audio cd. Definitely have family and friends in mind.
Having said that... I too would understand if my piece did not make it on the cd. I have a feeling that my arrangement of Greensleeves is quite different than the rest of you "real" composers' pieces.
Although it features GPO samples exclusively, the main "real" instrument is classical guitar.
I hope it all works out and thank you for everything... Dan and Gary!
Looking forward to hearing the finished product.
