In case you don’t hear from me…

My wife and I decided to ride out Hurricane Emily (We are a block from the beach, including my studio) in South Texas. Yeee Haaaw! It is supposed to turn west, with the brunt of the storm hitting south of us (leaving us with small gusts of 30 to 80 mph winds) . However, it aint turned yet:p . The house is boarded up, but almost surely we will lose power (hopefully that will be all we lose). In any case…I’ll keep you posted as I can.

In the meantime, SURFS UP!:D

Edit: just saw the other post - your right Ern! Wifey hates double dates.:p

Well, good luck. Whatever happens, you will have a story to tell when you are old and grey, sitting in your rocker! Actually, I can't picture you in a rocking chair!

Sort of reminds me of the time I stayed up all night on the beach waiting for a tidal wave that never happened. Well, I certainly had the whole of Kuhio Beach and Kalakaua Blvd to myself!

Man, I wish I had a wife understanding enough to let me ride out a chick as popular as Emily is these days... I bet Jude Law could use a bit of that understanding himself...

:|: :p :o

But seriously - hope you and yours come through without a scratch.

We were very fortunate. We had an outer band hit us for about 2 hours, but it did little or no damage in town. The storm surge came up to the sand dunes (which is why I saw 4 snakes in my yardhttp://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif – they seek the high ground). Roads to the beach were closed, but for the most part, we hardly even got any rain – and it was mostly blue sky. Nature is really amazing! Normally, one sees clouds moving from west to east (the prevailing wind always blows to the east). With a hurricane, it is the opposite. My wife and I watched for hours as clouds whizzed by, in front of the moon, going east to west.

The sad thing about hurricanes is, if you are spared, it usually means that someone else suffers. This has been on our minds (and is, in fact, every hurricane season). The night is young. It is only July, and most hurricane activity is in August/September. The season lasts until November. When one considers the horrible possibilities of loss of life and property due to natural phenomenon, it makes it even more inexplicable that human beings would cause these horrors intentionally (as in London and elesewhere recently)http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif .

I very much appreciate the prayers and support and hope that you will continue to give them to those that are hit by these storms as well as man made storms. Naturally, being the geek I am, I watched the radar as the storm came in – admiring the spiral (1.6), as in the hint in my sighttp://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/wink.gif .

Wife grew up sailing the Caribbean (even through hurricanes), she’s a wild chick herself http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif but ALL mine! http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/cool.gif ...And thanks Houstonhttp://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

Styxx, last report- the hurricane is headed for Beefalo!http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/eek.gif http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Glad to hear everything was okay in your location and that you and yours are safe!

It really is an amazing thing to go thru...when I was a kid I went thru Hurricane Carla and still remember trees in the front yard laying over parallel to the ground and then straightening up when each squall passed...and the sound was unbelievable!

You're totally right about the feelings...knowing that you have been spared means someone else has suffered. Last year when Frances came thru it had knocked hell out of places further south. But I was able to sit in the front yard and watch the outlying bands come thru Panama City...not a big deal as such things go, but still it was concentrated chaos! The tops of pine trees 30 feet above me were whipping back and forth violently, but at ground level everything was still and calm...a very surreal, humbling experience.

But jeez...I can't imagine even getting close to one of those things in a boat. You must have one exceptional wife!

ps - guess your warning to Styxx was enough...he's fled Buffalo for Indianapolis!

I'm very glad that you escaped that one Brian. Nature is destructively awsome at times....it would scare the living daylights out of me I'm afraid.http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/redface.gif IF you saw a movie of our planet with a frame every 100 yrs you wouldn't (if you had a choice) want to live here. Luckily we've short memories and a short lifespan so it's a lottery. Like being born into an era where you have to live your life out under a tyrant or an oppresive religion, for example.

I saw an interesting programme regarding America's worse natural disaster. No one I spoke to had even heard of it. It surprised me as it was in Galveston at the turn of the last century.

Similarly, I saw a programme on a Volcanic episode in the far east which was much much worse than Etna, Vesuvius or Krakatoa and I hadn't even heard of it. If Vesuvius and Krakatoa threw 20 and 30 cubic kilometres of material into the atmosphere this (forgotten one) threw out 100 cubic kilometres around 150 times more than Mt St Helens!! The rim has a diameter of 4miles!

It caused around 80,000 indirect deaths in Europe in 1815 due to crop failure. It was called the year without a summer. The volcano is called Tambora and is in Indonesia.

Still you've got to laugh, haven't you...http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif REmember things can always be worse.....and probably will be!!!:D

Cheers

Frank
