I'm looking to upgrade the reverb quality of my system - I'm using RTAS plug-ins on Digidesign LE. Presently the best verb I have is WAVES RVerb. Do any of you have suggestions or experience with something better? I've been looking at Altiverb, TL Space, and Song Oxford Reverb primarily trying to compare them. Any idea which is best sounding or are they very similar in quality? Or something else? I'm not a tweakhead. I usually go for presets, tweaking mostly just delay time and EQ a bit. Thanks.

Dunno what kind of music you're doing. I think that would be a consideration. I love altiverb for orchestral music. Altiverb 4 was a non-tweaker's delight. Version 5 is more complex and programmable.
Hope that helps,
Rob
the new wizooverb W2 or W5 is the best out there according to me !!
check it out here:

If you're considering Altiverb, I assume you're on a Mac.
At the moment, I really think AltiVerb 5 has the lead. The interface is outstanding, and the IRs are exquisite. AltiVerb is the longest going convolution verb on the Mac platform, and it's been through several very comprehensive updates. There's a very active user base out there creating new IRs. If you need convincing, go watch the QuickTime demo on the AudioEase site.
Additionally, I think that AltiVerb would be your best investment over the long term. It's AudioEase's signature product. I predict that AltiVerb will still be around long after many of their competitors are gone. To date, AudioEase's track record is excellent. I've found their customer support to be wonderful.

Much as I hate Macs and am unlikely ever to waste the money on one ever again, I have to agree with the sentiments about Altiverb. The lack of a PC version is the only downside to running my studio totally on PCs. I have investigated lots of reverbs recently, and W5 seems good, GigaPulse is promising, but AltiVerb still has the edge IMO. If you are on Mac, I'd say "go for it".

This is one of the best vst reverbs I've heard. Fairly reasonable price too. Try the demo, it should impress you.

Say Heath, does this one work inside GS3?
Thanks.

The Artsacoustic sounds very good indeed, Heath. Works fine as a VST in GS3 too.

Yes, I'm using a Mac G5. Thanks everyone. Your opinions and suggestions have helped me. I appreciate them.

If you're on a G5 and want real-time convolution reverb (and you do want real-time convolution reverb), then your choices are Altiverb, Waves IR-1, or a couple built into things (Logic Space Designer, BIAS Peak has one).
Five full-bore Concertgeboews take up 50% out of 200% on my 2x2.5 G5. My dual gig G4 can run two. You'll never run five Cgbs, of course, but the point is that they've really optimized it.
Waves IR-1 is very good, but it is less efficient - not that that's the only factor.
Rob, how can you just come out and say they're crazy for charging $450 for a reverb? What is that based on? Arjen from Audio Ease (not the one you're complaining about) told me he spent a year getting Altiverb to the point that it's not way ahead of the computers it's running on anymore. In other words, these things take a hell of a lot of development.
This sounds suspiciously like your argument that anyone who spends $60K making a movie is an idiot for paying people. :)

I think Altiverb is the single most important thing a musician on a Mac can buy next to the samples themselves. Very clever and stunning piece of work from the Dutchmen at Audio Ease.

I won't argue.
Arjen actually didn't put it that way, but that was the upshot of it: he worked for a year to get the buffers down so it's efficient.

R66 of Sonic Flavours is a nice transparent reverb. There is now a groupbuy running.

Altiverb 5 (http://www.audioease.com/Pages/mp3%20Altiverb%20Tests/Altiverbmp3demos.html) is a must if you use sampled sounds, and even if you don't, it will make your stuff sound excellent!

So, Nick & Co, are you all saying that even if you have Space Designer (in Logic), Altiverb is a must (especially for orchestral halls)?
Is it about the quality of the convolution, or more about the IRs (a moot point perhaps as you don't get the Altiverb IRs without owning it)?
I'll try the demo for sure!
Thanks
Nigel
PS glad the mag is doing so well, Nick!

Yeah - thanks Dan.
Nigel - I have Space Designer in Logic of course. Gotta be honest and say I never use it at all anymore. Maybe I should :)
It's more to do with quality rather than the amount of halls etc AFAIC.

Hi there,
The reverb that would like to recommend is: 1) Altiverb 5, it is simply the best. I use it mainly for big pieces that need a authentic sound. 2) Trueverb by Waves is a nice sounding verb for smaller work, like the standard pop instruments, bass, drums, keys as. 3) Space designer,.. It's a good sounding verb that comes along with Logic Pro. I think it's at its best in dance-sounding pieces.
Best,
Rob

Heath or anyone,
I've played with the demo of the ArtsAcoustic reverb plug and I'm truly impressed. If I should buy it, do I have to download it, or does it come in a box? Can't I just unlock the demo version? The latter would be really nice, no waiting time and so forth.
EDIT: I received answer from ArtsAcoustic and it's a downloader. Great!
Thanks,
Alex

The long & the short of it is: tried it, bought it, love it. Still use Space Designer but more for the effect-type reverbs. I like Altiverb much better for the real rooms. Sometimes though I even use Logic's AVerb when I just want some "fuzzy ambience". It all has its place but it *is* nice to have a really great reverb as a plugin.
I'd like to use my PCM80 again but in my new workspace (since June) nothing hardware is connected, I'm just using Virtual. So many nice things to explore-the Applied Acoustics VIs are really really nice for instance, and RMX is so cool in every respect.

Try Gigapulse Resonant Body on Acoustic instrument samples, then send it to your favorite hardware reverb. I doubt that I'll get an argument from anyone.
I use this live , and in my home studio so far. Looking forward to hearing this in a mastering facility in spring. I use a MPX 550 live, but my old PCM 70 is still my favorite. Of course when the PCM 90's get down to 1000 USD new, that will be my next favorite.

Question: Can you elaborate on any other factor that makes Waves IR-1 not as good as Altiverb? I can purchase Waves IR-1 for a $200 upgrade, a price which has me considering getting it over Altiverb. I do see that most of the people on this thread love Altiverb, yet no one (but yourself) has really compared the two which makes me wonder if anyone loving Altiverb has actually tried Waves IR-1 or not.

Since you have the RVerb I have to ask - which Waves bundle do you have? I think a lot of the Waves bundles include the IRL plugin now (if you're paid up on your WUP), which is an excellent reverb which comes with a lot of great impulses. With the WUP you can download them at acoustics.net.
I recently got IRL and all the impulses as it was added to the Platinum bundle, which I own.

I have the Native Platinum. And after my initial question WAVES offered the IRL for their members. I wasn't covered by WUP, but since we were offered the IRL I purchased WUP just to get the Verb. I'm glad I did. Thanks for sharing that info. If I didn't know it, I would have liked to.
