AtomChip has announced (http://atomchip.com/_wsn/page4.html) a new 6.8GHz 1TB RAM and 2TB HDD laptop, which is "coming soon". Apparently it does not use a hard drive but rather a "solid state AtomChip® optoelectronics". A new "non-volatile Quantum-Optical" type of RAM.. The processor is a: 6.8GHZ CPU (AtomChip® Quantum® II processor or 4 x Intel® Pentium® M processors 1.7GHz) .

Wonder if this is for real. Lots of sizzle and sales speak.

The description of their process:

is completely breathtaking!

I can't tell if it's fake or not. There are some clues that tell me it could be fake, but nothing that completely gives it away, so I'm not sure. I certainly don't trust them though. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! :D

Hmm, now that you mention it, looking at the site again does make me think that if they're trying to introduce this great new technology, they'd at least not be using such bad pictures.

It seems they were also at CES 2004, but the technology they showed off never seemed to make it to the market . . . If this is for real, I don't understand why they have such a poorly developed website (unless they are trying to trick people :D ) and why their domain name (atomchip.com, check WHOIS) is not registered to a company or corporation, but instead just one certain guy using "register.com". With further research, I found this company has no real reviews of their products, and that they have been the subject of debate on multiple technology forums across the internet. Perhaps it is real, but they certainly are not yet making efforts to prove it. :)

Yes but will XP Professional work with it?

Reading the spec closely:
AtomChip® Quantum® II processor (WTF?) or
4 x Intel® Pentium® M processors 1.7CHz ???

Memory: 1TB Quantum-Optical non-volatile RAM (NvIOpSRAM-SODIMM 200-pin) ???

I really don't see how you can fit or cool 4 Pentium Ms on a laptop. This has got to be a pie-in-the-sky product.

Some more articles... this is fast becoming like an urban legend with so much speculaion... If this does take place, it'll be nothing short of a revolution. or will it go the way of Wilhelm Reich's "cloudbusters"?

Well, they appear to be a legit company exhibiting at the 2006 CES show:

http://www.cesweb.org/attendees/directory/rd_exhibitor_details.asp?exhibid=7059&

That being said...

On this page, their marketing paragraph:
"Atom Chip Corporation is a research & development corporation. We are world leader in the manufacturing of Quantum-Optical RAM and storage. In one cubic millimeter 3.2GB of non-volatile memory are contained. The devices do not employ any mechanical or moving parts. This is radically better than all existing memories."

Their contact info on this page, rather than using an @atomchip.com address, uses @optonline.net (an ISP) addresses.

At www.atomchip.com (http://www.atomchip.com) thier contact and awards pages vector off to the www.compu-technics.com (http://www.compu-technics.com) domain.

I'm tempted to say that if they present themselves this poorly, how good can their technology be, but I've dealt with far too many excellent geeks who had no clue about anything other than their own particular techno-lust to make that assumption.

My gut feeling is that they're shopping for investors. These may well be some very smart people, but they are seriously in need of a marketing and image department...

Just look at the component prices on the cesweb links and that's most likely why it hasn't made a huge splash in the mainstream market.

Well, Gary...START a SAMPLIN'!!! With all that space you can sample all 127 velocities on the pianos and percussive instruments, 127 dynamic levels for each expressive instrument with sonic morphing (imagine those silky smooth transitions!!) and 127 EVERYTHING!!!! You're now only limited by that stupid 127 limit of MIDI!!!! :D :D

Pretty cool stuff!

Has anyione tried to bookmark their page from Firefox? It's OK in IE, but Firefox will NOR allow it to be saved. Curious. Prophetic? I think NOT!!! :D

But the way the tech world works, this is not a totally irrational scenario. They're jumping only double for the CPU, nd the storage is exactly what should be appearing about this point in the evolution of microchip hardware - something fast and with no moving parts. But whoever was complaining about the price - remember, we're talking 1TB= 1000 Gigabytes so with 1G of fast RAM going for $120 at Crucial, 1T=$120,000. They're talking $5-6000. That could be real, as new tech has to prove itself, and we're only talking one part, not 1000.

If it works this year, in five years that part will cost $29.99 at (would you like) Fry's (with that?)

Only time will tell, but it would be really nice if this stuff worked...
