Wood Violins (http://www.woodviolins.com/html/artists.html) makes violins that are "cool, sleek and hip" - an attempt to shift from the highbrow or dorky image.

" I may have to take violin lessons, but at least my dad looks like Howard Stern."

Sorry, it's the best I can do at the moment. The crossed bows are just crying out for some kind of comment - I just don't have the fuel to think...

These are just a couple contestants from the new television hit "Classical Idol"

EDIT: Oh, nevermind, how can that be funny when it really exists? http://www.abdn.ac.uk/newsletter/in_news/classical_idol.shtml

:D Some of that was just plain awful, and I don't much like all that added percussion and special sound effects, it detracted from the way it must truly sound just by itself. However, I did the the Copland Hoe-Down at the end! :D Also, looks like all these are electric, aren't they? In general, I'm not a big fan of that electric sound (although it really all depends on the music).

You know, I'm not really sure the picture needs a caption. I was laughing hysterically just looking at it. Love that strap that holds the Star Trek-looking thing to their necks. And the pointy ends - they must be useful for perforating the Marshall stacks at the end of the performance.

"Ozzie Osbourne and newly rehabbed son Jack practice for opening night of Ozzie's new rock ballet 'Where'd I Leave Those #$*^&$ Car Keys.'"

Do you really think that Dolly Parton would be able to play this instrument (for physical reasons)? http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif

Am I crazy (don't answer that), or do those "violins" have six strings, and what appear to be frets?

Sometimes the harnessing of electricity can seem like a bad idea...

Hey, I'm all for innovation. After all, the instruments we play now don't resemble what they were like 200 years ago. Still, string players have done pretty well without frets. Maybe that's about to change...

R. Pearl You may be right. Still, there are techniques a seasoned violinist uses that frets may obstruct, like smooth slides. Yet, it would be interesting to play one just for grins.

After watching the video I thought they were pretty darn cool. They make fretless ones too. I think it helps bring violin into mordern celtic and other styles. I do a lot of celtic stuff so I really dug it.

Yikes, they do have frets, don't they? Eeeww . . . they're not supposed to have frets! :D I wonder if these kind of string instruments would blend well if you had an entire violin section, or if it would make you go deaf from all the amplifying.

Chris,

Glad to know they have some utility. Now, which one of the two players do you most resemble?
:D

Oh I just can't leave this one alone. I knew those instruments reminded me of something. They look like Vulcan "Birds of Prey" from one of the Star Trek incarnations. Only with strings. So they're better. I think. But only after the cloaking device is disabled, otherwise they'd make no sound.

I'll go now.

:D That's a great point Larry! I wouldn't have thought of that, but now that you mention it, I think it would be nearly impossible for her to play one! :D (for physical reasons of course ;))

Steph :)

NASTY! (In the best sense.)

Now whole neighborhoods can complain about your kid practicing the fiddle.

(As an instrument this fills a much needed void. Here is the sound that Bond had been struggling for available to the masses. But Bond looks a lot better than this duo to most guys.....)

Ahhh - what Paganini might have done.

FYI: We could call this design, "Back to the Future!"

Regarding the Viol or "Viol da Gamba."

Also, a beautiful film... "Tous les Matins Du Monde" In which this instrument takes center stage. With Gérard Depardieu, you can't go wrong. A great soundtrack album.

Perhaps someday Gary will offer a GPO Baroque???

Hmm... frankly those two fellows in the picture with the plastic thingies look about as dorky as anything I've seen... :p

I agree and HOPE with you on this one - I would love some of those rare instruments.

I am sure that with time, Gary will release libraries of all sorts. Including the GBO = Garrtian BAROQUE Orchestra. :)

I am not sure, but I seem to recall Gary mentioning in passing that some rare instruments were going to be making their way into the GPOA. But not sure abiout that on - things change a lot from planning to production. :)
