Assuming your \'HD\' is a hard disk, the 512K cache is a buffer that the system can read from and write to. It helps smooth out responses from the disk so that you don\'t always have to wait for the data to go on and off the disk.
512K is sort of small though. Most of the newer drives are at least 2Meg and many are now coming with 8Meg.
