Rolph Spur has built a FireWire guitar. He has a site which isn't complete and is deutsch but there is a different picture of it there.

I wonder how its performance on the midi-triggered virtual instruments

What kind of MIDI guitar devices are you using?

Likely the FW is only carrying audio for each of the strings, sort of like the Roland hex pickups, their V-series, or Line6's new Variax.
Of course, they can then do the pitch analysis on PC side to convert to MIDI. But it's still subject to that lag-time of frequency analysis, particularly on low notes. Hopefully the lack of line noise will make it a bit less error-prone, though!
