And if it's live, and you can name the recording, bonus points!

Or if it's samples, and you can name the samples... bonus points. :)

(it's very short..I'll provide a longer clip later)

Well, the strings sound like samples for sure to my ear once they get into the rapid bowing. The winds don't though, what little there was sounded very convincing. But I vote samples. Couldn't say what lib.

It's a bit lazy for a real performance but still rather nice. I've played that one in an orchestra and there is more excitement in the beginning even if it starts from pianissimo (if my memory serves me right). :)

Sound Ideas - Just Noise ?

I'm with Fred on this one :) There is so much noise it is difficult to hear, but I say the whole thing is samples. However, if the noise could be reduced about 70-80% it would be much better. If it is samples, very nice job! If it is all live, then the recording engineer needs to find the A/C controls and shut off the air conditioning before recording starts :)

The fast repetative strings are the one thing that points to samples.

I don't know anything. :) But the music is great, love to hear the full version.

Sound like VSL instruments to me. The legato sounds seem very familiar. :)

Hah.. yep, it's samples. Opus 1.

I threw in the pink noise to hopefully throw people off. I got the idea because I had a live recording of this piece, but of course the intro is at ppp, so I had to boost the volume in Sound Forge to hear it.. and when I did boost it, I was hearing a lot of hiss. So I emulated that.

GOS incudes some hall ambience samples- just the background noise of the room, the occasional litttle cough and chair squeak- that is very effective for adding the effect you're talking about when used judiciously. Does VSL have anything like that included?

Sam,

Excellent mock-up. I wish it were longer.

I second that,
of course I always want to hang out and agree with the big guns around these here parts. :)

What is Opus, is it a part of VSL?

Opus 1 is considered a "VSL Lite," with the amount of articulations cut down, as well as the price.

Thanks.. yeah it's short, it takes a LOT of tweaking time to get things to sound just right. I'll have more time to work on it later when I'm not busy with auditions. This is one of my mockup goals to work on this year and next. My other mockup goal is Ralph Vaughn Williams' "Fantasia on a Theme By Thomas Tallis."

Oh PS, here's the version without the pink noise prank :)

Nothing like that in VSL AFAIK, but bela D has a very comprehensive "Musicians Noise" -I think it's only bundled though...

here are a couple of threads from the VSL Forum which might help:

Ahh. This is Schubert's "Unfinished Symphony No. 8." He never finished it.. and ironically, I never finished the mockup..hmm. ;) But seriously, I have plans to finish it..at least up to the point Schubert did... just not right now.

So do I get the bonus points for guessing the samples? :)

Yup! *throws beer at Chris*
That sounds violent, but.. it's not. It's.. a gentle toss. ;)
