It's Halloween time and time again to do another Spookiest Creepiest Halloween Music contest.
Let's hear some or your scariest, creepiest, spine-tingling, phantasmagorical music.
It can't just be spooky - it must be dead frightening and make your hairs stand up on end.
Some tips: Use the GPO organ, harpsichord, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, string glisses, and try adding in some sound effects and screams.
Those who have been frightened to post a demo, here is your chance to haunt the other forum members. :D
The winner will receive a a free JABB sample library (or other ghastly prize). ..or have their torturous screams be made into a sample library. Muuahahah

Please post your trick or treat. Looking forward to hearing your creepiest. This is going to be a SCREAM!

Mike, of all the jokes you've posted here, that may be your funniest yet! :p
Well, I'm on vacation in NY and have no MIDI controller, but I was demonstrating GPO to a friend by randomly entering notes in Sonar and it ended up sounding like a horror film soundtrack, so maybe I'll try to build on that. If nothing else, it may qualify for the "worst demo ever" contest!

Ooooooh!!
Organ, harpsi, bass clari, contralto clari, string glisses, I can make some wiked noises on my cello, flute, and violin. (not so sure about the bassoon)
COOL!!!! :D
I mean,
Scary... :n:
I'll try. Maybe when I stop getting homework and stop having to practice and stop having to do my chores and stop having to go to school and stop having to get a new computer I can whip up something good. :p

BTW: I'd be happy to email anyone who wants MP3's of my weird instrument noises. Some of them are really cool (especially the cello! ).

Gary,
Whoever won last year's Spookiest Music contest? I entered but I never heard anything about who won.
Is it okay to enter the same piece again this year?

Any time frame for this? Halloween is just a few days away but I won’t have any time to even think about writing music for about a week.
I did, however, post a little Halloween ditty in the worst demo contest thread (http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37658). If nothing else I could use it – it is so bad it is scary.

Well, here's my entry... done in old-time radio serial format. This is very disturbing, in fact, I'd recommend that your kids not be in the room when you listen to this, especially if they are a little sensitive, as it is likely to give them nightmares.

No way I'd make the 31st deadline..ha ha DEAD-line....get it? But since this was the deadline for the Xmas CD I thought I'd mix up the Holiday's a la Tim Burton and give you my lyrics to "A Christmas Song" with a Halloween twist:
Jack Frost roasting on an open fire
Chestnuts shoved right up your noise
Yuletide carolers being hung with the choir
and folks forced to live like Eskimos
Everybody knows some Turkey mixed with mistletoe
Helps to poison people right
Tiny tots with their eyes wide with fear
Will find it hard to sleep tonight
They know that Santa's lost his mind
and left a bloody trail of body parts behind
and ev'ry mother's child is gonna scream
when they wake up and see it wasn't "just a dream"
And so I've offering this simple curse
to kids from 1 to 92
Even though you thought it'd couldn't get much worse
Santa's coming...for you

Shaz will ask questions for all eternity.
Who'll stop the rain?
Who put the bomp in the bomp-de-bomp-de-bomp?
Why do birds suddenly appear every time you are near?
How many roads must a man walk down?
Why does everyone squeeze the Charmin?
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll pop?

Halloween Green Bean (http://www.endresnet.com/HalloweenGreenBean.mp3)
...a song my 3 year-old Becca wrote on Halloween, with some help from Roseann. Here are the lyrics...
I wanna be a Halloween green bean
I wanna be a Halloween bear
I wanna be a Halloween monster
so I can give you a scare
I don't think I'll be entering it in the contest, as it's more cute than scary and I don't want to split any possible votes with the utterly spine-tingling, bone-chilling Lusus Naturae (http://www.endresnet.com/LususNaturae.mp3), but I thought y'all might like to hear it.
Excellent entries! I have enjoyed listening to them all. Here's my spooky piece to share. Although I feel bad since it was not written specifically for this year at Halloween, so if that disqualifies me then, so be it, but I want to share nonetheless.
It's mostly GPO, with some other libraries thrown in. I wrote this last spring for a short film.
http://www.houseofblackbirds.com/mp3s/CPT_2m1TheDream.mp3
I did write something for this year--honestly! I'm not a completely lazy bastard--I didn't spend ALL of Halloween in a drunken stupor. ...but I literally just finished writing it. I haven't even started to program it yet. So I'll share it when I'm finished (probably next week sometime).

I ended up working on something but I sorta need a kick in the butt (read: deadline) if I want to submit it.
Its a little romantic, gothic and psychological than flat-out "creepy Halloween" but I think the sonorities still lend themselves to this topic.

"An Extremely Brief Halloween Symphony for Orchestra and Solo Werewolf":
http://adrianelliscomposer.com/mp3s/Adrian_Ellis_Garritan_Halloween-01.mp3
It's not easy finding a werewolf 11 days after Halloween. I found the old man skulking around the local ravine... tired, hungry, and not a bit irritable. I was going to have a 13 person choir for this piece, but the werewolf ate every last member, damn him. It's also very hard to give vocal directions to such a beast, so please excuse him if he's out of time in a few places. It was also his first performance, and he was a little nervous.
Enjoy!
I actually finished it! I'm not sure if this is still open, but here's my actual submission. The previous post was just a place holder. This is the real McCoy. I don't know what to call it though. It's kind of quiet starting out, but it gets loud, all of a sudden like...
Prepare for four minutes of sheer TERROR! You will scream! You will be terrified! You will get the heebie jeebies!*
http://www.houseofblackbirds.com/mp3s/SC_MIX_111305.mp3
*Heebie jeebies may not occur in all listeners. Please consult a doctor should heebie jeebies persist more than twelve hours.

Sorry... couldn't resist! This is a very enjoyable piece! I was hoping for a howling cadenza, though... Thankfully he didn't eat your orchestra!

JMC!
Thanks! Glad you liked it! I'm sure he'd have eaten the orchestra, but he had no taste for my sample CD's.
Hey, your submission is brilliant, love it! Some very nice moments in there; I really enjoyed the work in the woodwinds. Great arranging in the bigger parts - the power of the orchestra is showcased nicely. The descending string glisses near the middle!!! How'd you do that? Is that GPO? Fantastic!
Hi aelliscomposer,
Thanks for listening. Yes the glisses are all GPO. The only things that are not GPO are Flute II, Trumpet I, Trombone I, Timpani, Susp Cym (one of them), and the Anvil.
To create the glisses, I used a LOT of solo strings. Forgive me, Tom, for using the forbidden ensemble builder technique, but I needed a lot of trems and pizzes to make this piece work.
I played a chromatic scale on each violin track (there were 9 tracks for the solo violins and 1 each for Vln 1 Sect, and Vln 2 Sect). Some were quick some slow, and added CC64 to smooth it out, and CC20 at about level 88--I think.
There were a few issues getting it to playback correctly, so it took some work to get it to sound right. I ended up having to solo out just those couple of measures and drop it in to the audio mix. I also lowered the volume of the section glisses, so the overall support was there, but the dissonance of the individual strings would show through.
Anyway, hope that helped explain it a bit.

Well! Very nicely done - a great technical example of what's achievable. I just got GPO - the 'Werewolf' piece is my first attempt w/ this library. This totally inspires me to 'go deeper' already.
