View Full Version : Giga Format Sample Import

Hi all,

I just installed Kontact and the 1.2 + DFH patch. I love how it works 1000% over GSt160, but sadly find that it has some problems importing some giga format samples like Pure Guitars\' steel guitar fingered patch. Serious mapping errors. Samples are mapped over each other all over the place......

Do you guys have the same problem? I was hoping that I can replace GSt with Kontact......

As of today no app but Gigastudio is able to fully import giga files. They all loose the bells&whistles on the import and several give probs such as the one you decribe or other probs.

The only aceptable solution I´ve seen so far is using the app one kontakt user created for the community (free...or better said donationware)to convert a gig file to single layered and then manually reprogram the whole thing...very tedious! specially if you don´t exactly know how the original was placed.

Does anyone know if the Giga-sample-format is specified somewhere? If so, it should be possible to write a nice converter program...

I´m not sure (no Giga user), but I understand that Nemesys gave the required info to any interested hardware development. Now, about software convertion, I´m not so sure.

We are aware that the Giga-Import in Kontakt does not yet work 100% perfectly. We are trying to improve this import asap and give out an update. I can´t exactly say when this new version will be out, but I´ll let you know. Until then I know that the Chickensys Translator in the new version 3.0 does a quite good translation from Giga to Kontakt. I hope this version will be out the next couple of days.

Best,

Martin

Thanks Martin - here\'s a tidbit; Windows version 2.5 Build 85, up now, does a good job. Build 86 will be up Sat AM, does a slightly better job and does Akai Roland reasonably well. Monday will bring more formats and Mac releases.

Any questions, ideas, and feedback, fire away! support@chickensys.com, ask for Garth or Myrtle.

We would have gotten this out earlier, but yesterday was spent in mourning. But out of our grief... =)

I\'ll post more as I know more.

Does the mac version of Translater from GIGA to Kontakt translate keyswitching?

Or better yet, what EXACTLY does it not translate yet?

Like that I can deside things.

One thing I want is to import Giga format samples directly, without having to save them as Kontact format. Or it will cost me another 10G of HD space if I want to play GOS in Kontact......

If you’re using DFD, then you must obviously SAVE them to disk first. Think about it.

Also, in case you missed the announcement before it was removed by the moderators, I just wanted to mention that CDxtract 4.1 is just released, which includes Kontakt import.

Does CD extract translate keyswitching from giga to kontakt?

I just translated some Gigs to Kontakt format using Translator this past week with the latest update. The keyswitching appeared to translate correctly on the gigs I tried. I\'ve only tried it on a few so far.

Haydn,

I just got the Kontakt Giga import working, but I was disappointed with the the poor translation of velocity response. How accurate are the imports done with Translator in this regard?

Tomhartman,

No, I\'m just a regular user. The support was in the last update.

Hans,

I have not had a chance to do in depth checking on the translations. The few that I translated seemed to play quite close to the originals. I have not tried translating things like piano libraries. Only translated the Sonic Implants String Boxes and SAM Solo Horn.

Haydn....so you are saying you have a version of Translator that goes from Giga to Kontakt? I called Chicken Systems and they said it is \"being programmed\" and \"not ready yet.\" What gives with this??

I just installed CDxtract\'s v4.1 update and coverted a few *.gig into *.nki. Seems perfect. The keyswitching feature has been 100% included too. A/B test with GSt160. Not much difference. I\'m so glad that I can finally insert high quality realtime effects (UAD-1, TC Powercore, etc.) to Giga sound.

p.s.: I know the DFD feature requires a program file on the HD, but there IS a *.gig file there already. I just want Kontakt to import it from there, without costing me more HD space. Double space for 2 formats of the same patch is not the way to go.

Most of the things worked very good, including key-switching and velocity mappings. Also the ability to make controller-switched (or velocity-switched) instruments from several gig files in one step is really nice.

I have found two problems so far. Two of the pianos I tried to convert failed to load in Kontakt after the conversion with a \"parse error\". I also converted some brass patches and there are LP-filters in the gig files that are not implemented in the resulting Kontakt file.

Tom,

It may be that Translator conversion is not finished and so Chicken Systems may not want to advertise that they go from Giga to Kontakt.

Tom, are you on Mac? If so, Kontakt translation is only out for the windows version so far. The Mac version is supposed to be out this week.

I think it\'s better, but that\'s a non-authoritative statement unless I see a specific case. I\'ll look at it tonight and revisit that area.

Giga->Kontakt has been in the program for some time, but we didn\'t announce it since we are awiting for other things to come in, the other formats specifically. It\'s an important translation and it was sort of our way to beta test it and tread the waters.

Oh, and regarding releases, ->Kontakt for Translator Windows will be in tomorrow and Mac Monday (hopefuly).

Just so you know, when I called Chicken Systems on the phone about this, the man I spoke with checked your site and said, \"No, there is no Giga to Kontakt translation yet, I just checked the web.\" I told him I had already checked the web, and that\'s why I was calling him, because I couldn\'t believe there wasn\'t one. His answer....\"Well, we use the website too, so until you see it there, it isn\'t ready.\"

Just now, tonight (April 17th) I went to the Chicken Systems site at http://www.chickensys.com/translator/ (\"http://www.chickensys.com/translator/\")

I clicked on \"Documentation/Status.\" That takes you to a screen that allows you to put the source format (in my case, Giga) and the destination format (Kontakt) and check the status. Here is the reply that comes onscreen:

\"Status: Code Development

The Kontakt format is being researched and translations should be available shortly.\"
