View Full Version : Any JABBers with Edirol PCR controllers?

I just set up an awesome preset for JABB with the Edirol PCR-80. It uses every single Slider, Button, and Knob, but it really flows and everything is grouped together intuitively. and you can reach everything you need easily. If anyone wants a copy, let me know. This is the basic arrangement:
SLIDERS - Playing techniques - (Dynamics, Vibrato, Legato, Air Flow/Key Click/Growl, etc.)
KNOBS - Sound Tweaking (Length, Portamento, Var 1&2, Tone Quality, Plunger open/close, Trumpet Releases) (the 4 vibraphone controls are R1-R4).
BUTTONS - Keyswitches for Trumpet, Guitar, etc., etc.
L BUTTONS - Sus. Pedal (for when I don't have my pedal with me) and Pitch bend defeat
If anyone wants a copy, I can post it or email it.

Please send! I have a PCR-30 controller.

Hi everyone -- I posted my JABB stuff on my website.
www.uglybassett.com/gjabb
So far this includes:
-The JABB Reference Sheet
-My Edirol PCR & JABB Preset (for use in the PCR editor that came with the Edirol controller -- you can also download the editor from the edirol website)
-An assignment chart for the Edirol/JABB preset (in Excel Spreadsheet format).
Enjoy,
chris.

I'm also on a PCR-30 and have a similar setup, though I've used the rightmost sliders for common controls so I don't think I can adopt your scheme at this point. Mine is:
S5 = Breath Control
S6 = Expression
S7 = Channel Pressure/Aftertouch
S8 = Mod Wheel
Good tip on assigning B1-6 to keyswitches!

By the way, I forgot to mention:
I limited Air Flow Noise and Key Click to 0-60 values, because much higher than that is just plain weird sounding. Having a smaller range allows for more subtle edits, anyway...

Hyup, I do the same thing myself. I'd say that we should get Tom to limit that range in the programming, but since it's already in use, perhaps it's a little late?

Wow! Why didn't I see this befive? I have the Edirol PCR50. This is great! Thanks.

1. I assigned Modulation to a slider because the Edirol's springy MOD wheel is not ideal for dynamics I've defeated the spring for the MOD wheel easily. MOD control is just like a wheel giving you full control. It's so easy even a Caveman can do it. Hah hah hah.

Yeah, I saw your post on removing the spring, but I haven't had the ba[guts]lls to do it.
I like using a slider anyway, because it's right next to the other sliders. This way I can adjust dynamics, vibrato intensity and speed, and legato all at once in realtime, more or less.

I kind of thought many would be hesitant to try it. I was surprised at how easy it was. All the outside screws hold the bottom on and all the inner screws hold the circuit board, keys, and other working parts. After taking the bottom off, there it was. Popped off easily and now it controls perfectly. It was so easy that putting the spring back will be no problem.
Just think you'll have an extra slider.;)

Ha! :D (But let's not insult cavemen.)The Gieco commercial! Eh, looks as if I'll have to take 'em to dinner and apologies.
"Yeah, do a little research first" ... "I'll have the roast duck with the mango salsa"... :D

hey zoot..
have you done a template for pcr-80 for GPO ?
that would be really useful

I started to make a GPO template for the Edirol, but quickly realized that my JABB template is already set up to conveniently control GPO. All the controllers you need for GPO are already included in the JABB template, and in fact many of them have the same/similar functions as they do in JABB.
Sliders S1-S4 have essentially the same functions (cc1 Mod, AftTouch Vib, cc17 Vib Speed, cc64 Sus) -- although the vibrato controls don't apply to all instruments.
Knobs R1,2,3,4 also have the same basic functions in GPO as they do in JABB (cc21 length, cc20 port, cc22-23 var 1+2).
The only other additional GPO controller is cc16 for solo string trill interval, bow noise, etc. -- this is mapped to R7 in the JABB template (where it is used to control the plunger).
The buttons are the same too. L1 is cc64 sus. pedal, L2 is cc19, pitch bend defeat.
That covers pretty much all of GPO.
The JABB keyswitch buttons (b1-6, L2-3) might work for some instruments, depending on the range. You can tweak those buttons to trigger any keyswitches you prefer, or just ignore the buttons and do keyswitches that normal way.

For some reason my PCR-50 is not saving half the settings. After memorizing it calls up fine. Only when I shut down and on start up the next day, half are lost. ? Hm, fail to see what I am doing to cause this. Anyone have a clue?
Thanks.

Well, so much for the Edirol PCR-50. I've put the spring back in place and getting it ready for storage. This thing would not save any settings nor could I get cc11 assigned to any of the controls to use with SSV.
Like Gary said, must be bad caramel. :D
Anyone what to buy it? :D

Making sure to follow all the steps to saving with the software tool? They sure make you go through a whole hokey-pokey to do it!

A last, the controller was given to me with no software. I did manage to "turn on" the expression using a switch pedal and now I can hear the Strad although not as it should it is quite impressive!
It is inevitable that I save for another controller.

A pity, though: I really love my PCR-30. Very hard to debug hardware from a distance, though! "What is the message that pops up?" "Can you post a screen shot?" :D
I imagine we can work you through it if you're willing. Of course, it may still come down to a fried internal battery!

Styxx,
You can download the software and drivers from the Roland site at: http://www.rolandus.com/products/productdetails.aspx?dsection=d_downloads&ObjectId=582

Thanks Jim! :) Now, I have this connected midi. When I download the software, do I need to connect USB or will it be OK or maybe I'm taking for granted you know, sorry. But hey ... If I don't ask, right?

I think it used USB if my memory serves me correctly. That was a few years ago! We didn't have the manual either so we were faking our way through.
