I'm running Powerbook G4
MacOSX 10.4.2
867 MHz 1MB L3 cache
768 MB SDRAM

i'm using JABB and KontaktPlayer to play back FINALE 2006
music files and getting "sputtering" and "distortion" when i use the "Ambience" sounds.

Do i need more RAM?
A more powerful CPU?

Unfortunately I have to say yes to all of the above. Frankly, I'm surprised JABB will play at all on your machine. Meanwhile, enjoy what you can do with your computer. While JABB will barely run on a G4, as the advertising states, a G5 is recommended.

Best of luck with JABB, and I hope you can get your computer upgraded soon.

thanks for the info!

i'm wondering if the new INTEL based MACPRO books will be fine, as there are technically no G5 powerbooks? i need to stay with a laptop, not a desktop.

Check with MakeMusic tech support. They've received one of the Intel iMacs. They should be able to give you an idea of what does or doesn't work.

JABB wants RA. Then it wants MORE RAM. And just to be sure, add a few gigs more.

Previous system - G4, 2G RAM, DP 4.61. One instance of JABB big band rhythm section preset - about all it could handle, CPU spiking on pressing play, but coninues. Add a second instantiation, overload.

Brand-new G5 dual 2.7, 4'5G RAM. Loaded the lite trumpet section, second instantiation, loaded lite trombone section. third instatioan - loaded sax section. Could not get a 4th instantiation with rhythm section to run without overload spiking.

This guy wants a LOT of RAM, that's allt here is to it.

But it sure sounds good...

Oh, I don't think it wants *that* much RAM. 2 GB is probably a good number.

Also remember, if you *do* have a lot of RAM, TURN OFF DFD! Lots of RAM but a slow HD will still reduce your performance if you don't.

(And increasing your soundcard's latency and buffers also helps.)

Direct From Disk file streaming. There are controls for it in the Options menu.
