View Full Version : Gigastudio 3 Crashes system

I bought a new PC awhile ago just to use in my project studio. Sony Vaio, hasn't even been connected to the internet and is running like new. Just got Gigastudio the other day and it crashes before it even will open. I read all through the user manual and the only thing I got out of it was to run the diagnostics which I did. It showed me this, but I have no idea what it means.

Hopefully someone who understands all this will give you a proper answer:>(

However I do notice that it says that you don't have a GSIF compatible soundcard. I think that GS will not work without it, unless you were going to use it in rewire mode. If that was the case, then I don't think that you have enough memory.

That's exactly what I'm trying to do actually. I want all my apps to be on one system, so I'm just going to use it via ReWire into my host audio program.

As far as the memory goes, my computer has one 512MB stick in it. If it turns out it's as simple as buying another stick, not a problem, but I want to make sure that's the actual problem. Even if it is though, it's quite annoying since the computer is advertised as 512 ram and GS3 only requires 512

Oh, and when I try to open my sequencing programs, my computer crashes when it says "loading Giga3"

I notice that you don't have any GSIF soundcards. Your only soundcard is the built-in Realtek stuff.

At a minimum you will need to set GS to run in Rewire mode only. I'm not a Rewire guy, so I can't help there. I can't recall how to set Giga for rewire only if you don't have a GSIF card to boot with.

In any case you will want a better soundcard solution than the on-board thing. Your latencies will be terrible with that thing. Get something better, and disable the Realtek. If you get something with GSIF, you'll have the most options with GS3.

Actually, in the studio I'm in, we use a MOTU 896 as our sound interface between the console and GS3 computer. I'll try turning it on prior to booting GS3, but I don't think there will be much difference, but I'm desperate at this point.

And Nuendo will compensate for latency when I playing back the track as long as I set the parameters correctly. Assuming I'm not directly monitoring anything, theres not a problem.

Well, I have a laptop with the same audio card; it is unusable for anything to do with MIDI and audio, I'm afraid (IMO).

GS may be able to run with the RAM that you've got, but you are trying to run a sequencer as well, so you've got no chance of seeing this one through without extra RAM.

If you play your MIDI tracks in live, low latency is critical, as you can't compensate for it.

Anyway, good luck with connecting the MOTU to the GS3 PC!

Thankfully I never have to play my midi tracks live. Though if I did, believe me, I would get a dedicated interface for it.

So anyways, I upgraded my memory about an hour ago, I know have about 1GB which is plenty more than required and GS3 still wont load. It's kind of funny in a frustrating way, I bought another computer so I could dedicate it to audio and avoid these problems. So far it's worked flawless, and still does more or less with everything else, but GS3 is horrible so far, hasn't loaded yet.

So anyways, now I've turned on my interface (MOTU 896 which is GSIF compatible) and I've upgraded my memory to double the required amount. Still no luck.

Well, you're doing all the right things. Did you re-install GS after you'd added all the new items to your set-up (I'm not sure if you should un-install first though)?

What kind of CPU is this? With 3.01 installed from the disc in the box, you'll have to disable HT. Update to 3.12 and you should be good.

Brilliant, I love these kinds of answers. They give me things to do and try even if they don't work, rather than just sit around and sulk because I'm a victim of Gigastudiolessness

I'll try disabling the HT and also doing a uninstall reinstall as well. Cross your fingers, I'll report back in a bit.

And also, I don't want to upgrade to 3.12 just yet, because then I would have to register. I don't want to register just yet because if I still can't get it to run, then I'll at least be able to sell it.

Success. I now have GS3 up and running so far perfectly. I never would have thought that is was the Hyper Threading processer screwing it up, but wow, it works perfectly now.

Thanks for all the responses, now I'm off to go overcome the GS3 learning curve so by the time my new audio shipment (which is including two awesome sample libraries) gets here I'll be set to take my MIDI compositions and put them to good use.

You don't have to register to update to 3.12.
