View Full Version : Blown Away with Tom's Scream Trumpets!
Garritan
04-11-2006, 11:39 PM
Tom has just finished a new demo focusing on the extreme range of the trumpets.
www.garritan.com/JABB/JABBDemos/PsychosisInTrumpetsville.mp3 (http://www.garritan.com/JABB/JABBDemos/PsychosisInTrumpetsville.mp3)
Tom calls it a demented scream trumpet demo and titled it "Psychosis In Trumpetsville" and you'll know why when you hear it. The message here is, of course: Most trumpet players are inherently crazy. :p
Tom thought that the unique capabilities of the JABB library (with respect to upper range trumpet) needed to be further illustrated, so he took on the task. Note the fast runs and wide-interval glisses - all accomplished using the shakes layer programming. Nothing fancy here in the mix
Tom intends to tie this to a tutorial since it contains a lot of information on the advanced use of the shakes layer.
ENJOY "Psychosis In Trumpetsville"

Dayumn! That sounds like Maynard!
Maynard G. Krebs, of course - who'd ya thunk?... :D
Great demo, Gary, Tom. Besides being a grooving, interesting piece of music, the horns are brilliantly detailed, the drums are incredible and the feel is perfect for the style. Tom, would you be willing to post the midi file for that? A LOT of great info there...

My first feeling was, "I got to buy this library!"
Nice writing, Tom!! I forget the programmers are musos too!:)

Tom, would you be willing to post the midi file for that? A LOT of great info there...As Gary mentioned, I intend to do better than that. I will do a detailed tutorial that not only gives the MIDI data but explains the "whys" and "hows." Some of the applications of controllers (especially taking advantage of the shakes layer) are less than obvious - but very powerful. The list of intended tutorial subjects is now at 24. I hope to bring them out in groups. I will probably not introduce them until the next programming update is completed. I want the tutorials to reflect the library in its post-update form so that they will have a reasonably long shelf life. Once they are posted I think most things in the library will be pretty clearly explained for beginners on up to very advanced users.

Nice writing, Tom!! I forget the programmers are musos too!:)Thanks, Steve. My "muso-muscles" don't get much exercise these days because of that lousy 24 hour clock limitation.

Tom,
that's a spectacular track! I think I need to go and look at the library again.
Brilliant job!
Just looked out the window to catch a line of demoralised trumpet players with their suitcases walking off into the sunset......

I can see the veins popping out of Tom's neck especially on that last scream! :D
Wow, this reminds me of Doc Severnson all the way!

Ya know, "support" is just not a strong enough word for what you guys provide your customers. Education, motivation, liberation, inspiration and dedication are all better words. An undergarment can provide support; you guys change our world. Many thanks for sharing your incredible talents.

Trumpeters walking off into the sunset? Maybe so - but it's more likely that it will happen because they're handed a chart with the words "Do it just like Tom did in that demo... you know, *that* demo..."

Yow!
I have 3 things to say:
1 - that was AWEsome!
2 - I'm STOKED that I own JaBB
3 - I have _so_ much to learn

Wait, what's this now? Tom was screaming at some trumpet player and he blew away? What? Come on let's get serious here this is a family restaurant and you can get anything you want at Garritan's Restaurant! (Except for Gary) :D
holy crap.
My JABB programming doesn't sound that good... but then how can you compete with the creator?

I think the tutorials will help a great deal on that. I've played with those controls a bit, but haven't done any production work with them yet. I'm still tooling up some "secret weapon" processing and mixing tricks to punch them up a bit. Heady stuff.

Greetings,
Just saw Mr. Ferguson with his nonet a week ago ... are you sure they didn't venture to Washington for a session recently?
I can't believe how much good music and education is available in this community; thanks for sharing and inspiring. Looking forward to the next tutorial!

Great job Tom!
This is more proof of the fact that decent mockups can indeed be made very
quickly with programs like GPO, but JABB is just like a real group. To expect the musician's to just "run through" the piece a few times, and then perform it flawlessly is not realistic thinking. Rehearsals take alot of time if the music is really expected to be top notch.
After listening to this work that Tom has done, it is very evident to me that he did not just throw some notes into his sequencer and then load up his favorite sounds and say.... "well, let's see what this baby sounds like"
I urge you all to spend more time perfecting every little detail that does not sound right. If you can't pinpoint the problem, send the work to a forum friend, and ask their advise. This is a very powerful forum with a broad range of experienced musicians.
Take your time, do your best and don't post it until it will blow someone's socks off :D
OK, maybe it doesn't have to actually blow anyone's socks off, but maybe that's a good goal to have from the start. :)
Nice sound Tom! :)

I totally agree. I am turning all my students on to anything Garritan. Garritan and Spectrasonics have got it right! My thanks as well. I always get a kick out of watching my students discover Garritan!

As a fellow trumpet player with a real life trumpet (as compared to a fake rubber trumpet I suppose) - I am shocked. My mouth is still open. Drool is messing up my keys!!!!!
I WISH I COULD PLAY THAT WELL (in real life)!
Was that GPO? Which Garritan library was that? I must buy it NOW!
Fantastic stuff. So damn real it's crazy sick good (and that's pretty good).
Wow!
