Hi Everybody,

I compose music by ear and i feel like is time to get some knowledge about music theory and harmony.

Think that i know almost nothing about music theory.

Wich books would you recommend me? Starting from the beginning.

Wich are the essentials for you?

Thanks in advance.

Best.

Two college texts I liked a lot are:

"Elementary Harmony" by Robert Ottman
"Technique of Orchestration" by Kent Kennan

Both of these have been around since the 70's, but the common practice period hasn't changed much since then  .

There is also an Advanced Harmony by Ottman, but it sounds like you should start with the first one.

Hearing and Writing Music - Professional Training for Today's Musician by Ron Gorow.

I have it and for ear training I believe it's very well thought of.
