I am pleased to present this Gofriller Solo Cello demo that was composed and performed by Giorgio Tommasini.
It was played entirely in real-time using controllers. It was not assembled or pieced together the way traditional samples are usually done or edited after the fact.
Here is the first demo of the upcoming Gofriller Solo Cello:
Ambient Version:
MP3: (http://www.garritan.com/Strad/Cell-demoBastyr.mp3) http://www.garritan.com/Strad/Cell-demoBastyr.mp3
WAV file (http://www.garritan.com/Strad/Cell-demoBastyr.wav): http://www.garritan.com/Strad/Cell-demoBastyr.wav
(Using a Bastyr impulse from the Upcoming Real Spaces)
Intimate and Close Version:
MP3 (http://www.garritan.com/Strad/Cell-demo05012006-dry.mp3): http://www.garritan.com/Strad/Cell-demo05012006-dry.mp3
WAV (http://www.garritan.com/Strad/Cell-demo05012006-dry.wav): http://www.garritan.com/Strad/Cell-demo05012006-dry.wav
What is remarkable about this demo was that it was played in real-time.
The dynamics, the changings in playing techniques, the onset, speed and intensity of vibraro were all performed on-the-fly. Like the Stradivari it uses exclusive Sonic Morphing technologies to allow real-time performance.
Gofriller cellos are regarded as one of the best cellos ever made, and are highly sought after. Many of the most famous cellists have preferred cellos by Mateo Gofriller, a renowned Italian cello maker form the early 1700's.
This is a work in progress and we're getting close to completion. We'll be posting more demos (including videos) soon.
Enjoy!

That is so mine! I'm still freaking over my Strad and now this. That is so rich and full - what a sound!
I don't know what else to say except that this Cello and my Strad are the best sampled instruments I have yet heard.
Wow!

Very, very fascinating!
At 0:35 I hear a resonance an octave down at the D ... artefact or intended?

Besides that it would fool me - even more than the Strad! Awesome job, everybody!!!

Surprisingly expressive and musical sounding. Great demo. Can you send this one off, in a press release, to NPR? I really think people in general would be interested in hearing how close it has come.

That's sounds excellent:) Just one thing, I thought the vibrato was just a little too fast in a couple of spots to be super-realistic. Presumably that's easy to tweak...

When released, a Strad/Gofriller bundle would be nice.
A guess a solo vocal with morphing technology is next?

I agree about the vibrato being way too fast. I assume the vibrato speed will be controllable like the Strad, and that the speed we have heard here is full speed.
Sounds excellent Gary and Giorgio!

The Ambient version is particularly stunning. Will this be part of the plugin, or will "Real Spaces" have to be purchased separately?

Gary, nice to hear the ambient version. Is there an ambient version of the Stradivarius in the pipeline? The reason I ask is that I find the strad too rich on occasions.
Cheers!

The most important thing, is the frequent variation of subtle articulations, all possible in the same program, just modulating your keyboard play-style, and few controllers.
The MIDI programming is also coherent and quick, thanks to the flexibility of the system.
Impressing technology, for a real "virtual instrument".

Great job you guys. The vibrato at :25 and :49 is WAY too fast and nervous. Sounds like the vibrato will be 'controllable' to a certain extent. The tone is right on though.

Hi all,
If a cardiologist with little musical background, improvising on a weighted keyboard may raise discussion about his cello playing technique....well,.. we are probably on the right way. ;)
Thank you very much for your generous appreciation.

Everything works but the ffw.
I kind of miss the fact that we can see where we're at in the song but it's great anyway...
Argh! Tiny cellist stuck in my speakers!
The embedded player works, but scared the crap out of me. Damn good sound by the way. Can't wait to see what this sort of technology brings to the other instruments and sections...

Gary, this is a very impressive sounding cello. As a cellist, I can tell you that there are many cellists "out there" that play vibrator too fast and intensely. ... So, this problem within the Gofriller sample reminds me of a very common habit amongst even some of the best cellists. ...
I am in need of a software package for symphony orchestra that includes this level of cello in it. Will this be included in one?
Again, it is impressive.

SarahSarah,
Welcome to the forum! It's good to hear what a cellist thinks of this instrument. The feedback from someone familiar with the instrument is very helpful. I hope you accept the invitation of being a beta tester for this new instrument, :)

Gary,
This sounds very good indeed. Congratulations to you and the developers!:)
I'm not yet convinced by the concept of real time playing. I'd like to know how much practice was required to produce this demo......(don't ignore the general experience acquired by the player during the development of the system too!)
The trouble with real time is that you have to learn different subtelties of the controllers depending on what instrument you are using. I do, of course, see the attraction of reducing the tweaking time though.......even if one doesn't have time to practice the intricacies of each instrument using albeit similar controls.
Still, you can't lose as long as you give the tweakers the controller variability that is required.....real time or not! :)
I'll have to buy one to see how it goes....but I've a lot to do before that.....:)
Best regards
Frank

Now that Kontakt 2.1 includes skins for the instruments. That secret varnish recipe, could be very useful. :)

As such it did not require practice. As Giorgio mentioned earlier in this thread he is "a cardiologist with little musical background, improvising on a weighted keyboard .... ;)"

Yes you will need to learn the subtleties of the controllers just as a real player learns to use the bow and develops mastery over the instrument. The option is also there to tweak after-the-fact if you must, but I don't see a reason one would need to if performed properly. It would be easier just to play another take.
I'll have to buy one to see how it goes....but I've a lot to do before that.....:) We expect to hear great atonal cello contemporary music from Yo-Yo Hardy. :D

Seriously Gary, you must have slipped up.....those words, strictly, shouldn't be in juxtaposition....:D
Also I'm not happy with the slur on cardiologists. Why is it that it should be so surprising that a cardiologist should have the ability to make great music? Surely it's no more ridiculous than a proposition which doubted the ability of a lawyer to develop decent music products! :D

Clearly Hardy knows what he's talking about. Cardiologists seem to be prone to improvisation, hopefully outside the medical field. ;)
