CNET News reports (http://news.com.com/2061-12572_3-6091895.html?part=rss&tag=6091895&subj=news):

"..about an experimental "Web operating system" that a small team at MIT created. YouOS is an online platform with a window-based, graphical user interface. The service has handy applications on it, like an RSS reader, an email client, and a text editor. The team has opened up the platform so other people can write applications for it, and many have -- there are nearly 200 applications you can install on your own YouOS account.

One of the default applications on YouOS is a Web browser, which is ironic, since the browser runs under YouOS, which in turn is displayed in your computer's browser, which of course runs on your computer's operating system. "

Web OS may be the beginning of something new or maybe it may die on the vine.

When they dispense with the browser entirely from the web-based OS
paradigm, they might just stop strangling themselves with that vine...

Of course, I never went to MIT, so -- what do I know.

While I certainly like the increase in web-based applications, I would think an online OS would be a bit pointless if it didn't offer something you couldn't do without it...

er... duh. :D :D What an insight.

Sean! Get with the, uh, program!

So far with these web-OS thingers? You can not only not do
a lot of things you could do otherwise, but when you don't do
them, you can do it even slower than you already don't.

See, it's one a those "minimalist" things... less is more, more or
less.

HA HA HA!! :D :D :D

So... can the OS run within itself?

Useless duplication is the very soul of ridiculous redundancy.

Yeah, it does sound kinda funny... But so did Java apps when they first appeared. I have a funny feeling that this might actually take off. Could be interesting (or scarry) to see what happens with it.

Its an intriguing idea actually. Its similar to Java. create a sandbox inside which feature rich applications can run, hosted entirely by a webbrowser. I'm not sure yet what this buys you.. You can run more than app at the same time inside a single browser window. ok. Perhaps diskless workstations would work this way or for example...say...in internet cafes...they might have a stripped down PC with barebone minimum stuff on it...including a web browser that can then run this YouOS inside it. Little or no admin required on each machine. this is not a new idea..but perhaps doing it inside a web browser is. Dunno.

I cursed and spat when Gates and Windows decided to 'incorporate' Explorer so deeply into their OS. I still think it's a dumb, intrusive thing to do. I remember using a little program called 98Lite pro, to get rid of explorer out of windows along with a lot of other completely useless c**p, so my audio (cubase included) would run better. And it did, by a country mile.

Running programs inside a browser seems like sleeping with the enemy for me.
Must be old fashioned, i guess.

Then there's my rock band's motto:
"Less is more, but more is EVEN MORE!!!!"

I did go to MIT. All we did all day was sit around and play with vines. They make great neckties. Also, girls used them as belts from which to hang their calculators. But, I think that the lawyers have since banned them because they can be misused.

Are we on topic yet?

Cool! They came up with a new name for the "Thin Client" architecture of the late '90s.
