North Korea Confirms Nuclear Test (http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/10/08/korea.nuclear.test.ap/index.html)

"SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported Monday the country has performed a successful nuclear test."

Well...this can't be good.

We're still breathing, so I'll refer you to a fortune cookie I got a few weeks ago and have kept in my wallet since:

"The stars come out at night. All is well."

I think we should make Bobby Knight ambassador to North Korea. He'd settle things in a hurry:

Why am I thinking of the old song "Merry Minuet" by the Kingston Trio? Circa 1958??? if I remember. Lyrics were as follows I think - if memory serves:

They're rioting in Africa
There's strife in Iran
There's hurricanes in Florida
And Texas needs rain.

(insert three lines here about various groups hating various other groups)
And I don't like anybody very much.

But we can be tranquil, and thankful, and proud.
For man's been endowed with the mushroom shaped cloud.
And we know for certain that some lovely day
Someone will set the spark off, and we will all be blown away.

They're rioting in Africa
There's strife in Iran
What nature doesn't do to us
Will be done by our fellow men.

Sadly, not much has changed, even in the places the song names.

yes, not much seems to have changed, but,,, today, JoongAng Daily which is the common newspaper of South Korea reported that 65% of South Korean people agree with their own nuclear armaments. Something is changing.... we may need a new song.

I never realized how much he looks like Leslie Nielsen.

Hey, that's it, maybe we need to get Frank Dreben on the job!

Thug: Drebin?
Frank: Yeah!
Thug: I got a message for you from Vincent Ludwig.
[Shoots gun at Drebin]
Thug: Take this!
Frank: I can't hear you! Don't fire the gun while you're talking!

Or maybe they just stuffed a bunch of TNT in a hole and set it off.... ?

Seismic data casts doubt on North Korean nuclear test claims Brian Jackson , DiscoveryChannel.ca

Richter scale measurements recorded by South Korean seismic monitoring stations have brought into question just how successful North Korea's nuclear test was.

North Korea announced their underground test of a nuclear explosion on Monday morning, but wouldn't elaborate on the explosion's force. After two different seismic monitoring stations reported tremors around 4 on the Richter scale, some scientists are saying it could be a failed test.

An official Pyongyang statement said: "It has been confirmed that there was no such danger from radioactive emissions in the course of the nuclear test, as it was carried out under scientific consideration and careful calculation."
But some scientists estimate the blast was equivalent to less than 1 kiloton of TNT - far less than the expected 15 kilotons from a successful bomb.

North Korea warned China 20 minutes ahead of their test that took place at 10:35 a.m. local time. At that time, the South Korean Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources reported a seismic tremor measuring 3.58 to 3.7.

Later, the U.S. Geological Survey announced a 4.2 recording from the same time.

This Richter scale reading is equivalent to a 1 kiloton explosion, according to Gary Bigson of the Australia Seismology Research Center. If this estimate is accurate, it means the bomb didn't completely detonate.

Scientists have only reviewed preliminary data from the event and hope to delve further into the information. The UN's Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization has a world-wide network of 189 seismic and hydro-acoustic monitoring stations and the raw data collected has been released to member states.

Analysis of particles leaked into the atmosphere by a nuclear blast could also give evidence of whether the test succeeded or not.

Interesting - public reports of expert analysis are suggesting that if the test was nuclear at all (still unconfirmed) their test was probably a 'fizzle'. I'm hoping they faked a nuc test with a few thousand pounds of TNT ...

It's great going through life as an unbridled optimist. Delusions are the secret of happiness, in case any of you guys need a secret solution to mood problems.

I once flew back from Japan - at the exact same time that N. Korea had announced that they were going to fling one of their missiles into the Pacific blue. Fortunately... they missed me.

Personally, I think they're a member of the Axis of Crazy.

What’s Wrong With a Nuclear Armed N.Korea? (http://english.chosun.com/w21data/html/news/200610/200610130025.html)

Well, one advantage to the North Korean Nuclear Program is that every day folk like you and I can finally buy Nuclear Warhead at bargian basement discounts! I was able to catch a great deal on e-Bay recently and my neighbor has been cool enough to let me store it in the alley between our houses. Don't think I'll ever get around to using it, just makes me all warm and comfy knowing its there if I need it!
