View Full Version : The 3rd Annual Spookiest Creepiest Halloween Music Contest

Garritan
10-09-2006, 12:29 AM
It's getting to be Halloween time and time again to do another Spookiest Creepiest Halloween Music contest.

Let's hear some or your scariest, creepiest, spine-tingling and gruesome music.

It can't just be spooky - it must be dead frightening and make your hairs stand up on end. :wow:

Some tips: Use the GPO organ, harpsichord, bass clarinet, contrabass clarinet, string glisses, and try adding in some sound effects and screams.%-If you have the Strad there are some fx you can play and JABB has those triple C screams by Tom

Those who have been scared to post a demo, here is your chance to frighten the other forum members. :D

The winner will receive a a free Stradivari 2.0 sample library (or Marching Band or some other ghoulish prize). ..or have their tortured screams be made into a sample library.

Please post your musical trick or treat. Looking forward to hearing your creepiest. This is going to be a SCREAM!

Is there any requirements? I did some pretty creepy stuff that I could post, but it has a voice over on - the VO really adds to the creep. . .

Also, it uses more than GPO - But it does use GPO!

J-If it uses a substantial amount of GPO/JAB/Strad/GOS that would be be creepy enough for the contest :D%-

Do we just post a link to our piece like garymosse has done or do we send it to someone as is done with the orchestra challenges? Just want to get this right.

BTW Garymosse: Great Job!)(~ )(~

kill two birds with one stone by also making this an entry into "worst demo"! C'mon... someone has to beat those bagpipes & tympani!

Since the Worst Demo contest never actually ended, I consider it ongoing. I was planning to see how well GPO performs in a death-metal piece. This just gives me another excuse.

is there a limit to the number of entries? Is there time limits? Or just post away and hope we win free violins?! (I personally think I should just because I could really use a free violin - and it would also make me feel good)

To help you with your spooky Halloween music: Free Fangs!

Sometimes you just need something to help inspire you on this Friday the 13th. Here's a creepy idea. While composing just take a common plastic fork, remove the prongs, insert and you can look like this:

You'll be making spooky music in no time (and maybe scare some friends).:eek:

Okay, I'm Making my post. This is a little bit of a different post but I've had people tell me this stuff is a bit creepy - although not in the Halloween sense. So it may not count.

Here's the story - about a year ago I was hired to write underscore for an Audio New Testament bible. It was a benefit product to help Mercy Ministries (www.mercyministries.org) raise money for the girls they work with. The concept was "famous Christian women" would read the whole bible. That's why there's women readers.

Now with that said - The music I did for the book of Revelation has recieved quite a few positive comments. Some of those comments include "creepy". And I really want the Solo violin library so my wife told me I should submit this :)

With all that said, someone decided the bible was more important than my music (which is probably true) so the real version has the music mixed way back. This is just a rough working mix that I did and I cut these excerpts from the 2-mix. So there's LOTS of mixing needs floating around.

ALL of my strings, woodwinds and Harp was done with GPO. Some of my Brass was GPO. Some of the Perc was GPO but most of it is from London Orchestral Percussion. The other major libraries worth noting are Stormdrum, additional brass from EWQLSO, and Lots of FX from Atmosphere. If it's not scary please tell me so I can make up something else to try to win - I'm broke and I want the violin!!

Here's two excepts:

Excerpt 1
www.thesoniccellar.com/RevelationExcerpt1.mp3

Excerpt 2
www.thesoniccellar.com/RevelationExcerpt2.mp3

I might add the second one is more creepy because it never stops than the actual music. But I suppose you can all make your own decisions on that :)

Okay, Halloween is fast approaching...

Preface to my entry:

You slowly open the old "creaky" wooden door. Suddenly you step into another dimension; one of sight and sound -

NO, silly, not the twilight zone%- .

Your in a pumpkin patch and it's Halloween:D .

There's is much to see and hear. Your imagination can get the best of you if you aren't careful! As the door "creeeaaaaks slowly shut, you are back, safely inside...or are you? Listen and hear!

Wrayer,

If there is way to download your song without starting a password account with them, they do not make it easy to figure out how to do it.

David.

PS: If mine does that, on mydocsonline, please let me know, because when i click it it just plays, but i don't know if it does that for people who don't have an account.

Here's my entry for the contest.

It's kind of a "collage/horror film score" thing instead of a scary song.

All the strings and string FX are GOS. In fact, a lot of the sound fx are GOS too.

Halloween piece

The Art of Nosferatu, 6:51, 9.6Mb (http://www.tcinternet.net/users/djk/kopp-art_of_nosferatu.mp3)

Narrative: It’s the vampire tale with a twist. Instead of your crusty ol’ no-talent vampire, this walking undead endures damnation as a virtuoso concert pianist, playing with super-human ability and intensity. Stalking the dead of night since the Middle Ages (he used to be a monk), he longs for release of his tortured soul, finding solace only in his art. The unholy creature entraps his female victims through play at the keyboard, drinking their blood for sustenance once they have come under the spell of his music.

Cue sheet:

(0:00, Crypt) : Our fantasy begins ominously at the stroke of midnight deep within the vampire’s crypt.

(0:47, Awaken) : The vampire awakens & rises from his coffin.

(1:17, Flight) : Nosferatu’s theme: appears whenever the vampire transforms, takes flight, does battle with foes, etc.

(3:24, Trance) : The haunting trance theme, building to a ferocious climax.

Rendered with GPO v1.2 Steinway piano, Overture 3.6.0, Ambience reverb.

Hi all,

Nightshift %-

I have been listening & really enjoying all the brilliant pieces in the Garritan Spook Fest!

Hear is my cameo contribution to the ‘festivities’…it is a dish that is probably best served chilled!

This is my first go at using JABB, (so for me at least!), it has been a fun experience.

I wrote & recorded the piece in Sibelius with JABB & used the flute & wind machine from GPO plus a couple of sounds from my sound card.

Many thanks for listening.

Best wishes,

Apologies for the delay. I didn't know googlepages had a filesize limit and originally was using a 320kbps mp3. Here it is,

The Haunted Carnival

http://peteroregan.googlepages.com/PO-HauntedCarnival.mp3

Instrumentation:
2 flutes, 2 clarinets, 2 oboes, 1 bassooon, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, 1 contrabasstuba, strings, perucssion, glass harmonica, piano, and the GPO organ which I've turned into a calliope

also some sfx and some post-processing with ambience and glaceverb reverbs and some cakewalk fx

created in overture se, ported to sonar and edited, recorded in goldwave (because sonar won't bounce VSTs for some reason)

Enjoy!
