View Full Version : RME Multiface/Digi9652

I am just about to replace my noisy Gina20 card for something else in my Giga machine and my choice has fallen on the RME Multiface since it has both digital and analogue outs. My question is, can you, using RME\'s \'TotalMix\', route your outputs with complete freedom, a bit like in Pulsar? I want to be able to output the same signal to ADAT channels 1-2 and analogue 1-2 etc. Possible?
If nobody have tried the Multiface, do you know if it is possible on the Digi9652? Because if it is so, I assume it can be done on Multiface too.
Last question: Digital sync. I have no wordclock in/out on my Pulsar2 where I\'ll be sending the output to through ADAT. Will my sync work fine without a dedicated wordclock, simply syncing to ADAT, or should I prepare to get a wordclock module for my Pulsar?
TIA!

re multiface routing: yes that works. you simply click on the input and then have all outputs in a list and can tick as many as you want (you could send one input to all available outputs too).
re sync via adat: should not be a problem, you may want to download the multiface manual (\"http://www.rme-audio.com/english/download/mfwin_e.pdf\") and read the sync part

Thanks Markus! So there is a graphical mixer on all those RME cards? Funny they dont have any screenshots on their site, they just mention the \'TotalMix\' system.

TotalMix(and thus the routing you described)is only available for the Hammerfall DSP interfaces (i.e. Digiface & Multiface), _NOT_ the Digi9652!!!! So you\'ll have to go with the Multiface/Digiface.

Ahh cool! Thanks a lot! It doesn\'t look pretty, but as long as it works, who cares http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif

You are right, it is ugly: the look is based on the Cubase-mixer

Simon,
If you are running XP, be aware that RME does not have any GSIF XP drivers.

According to RME (posting in their support-newsgroup) the GSIF-drivers for XP should be available this or next week.

Yeah but that\'s ok. I run Win98 - tried XP but it doesn\'t seem to work with my Gina20. So I\'ll try again when the RME drivers are out.

I think Multiface is very good choice with the TotalMix features.
I am expecting mine for one of these days but it seems that RME has problems in delivering units, at least here in Europe.
But I suppose not for still a long time...

RME is German - so the cards are harder to get hold of in the US - HA!!.. http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif But STILL not shipping is what I heard. I was told it would ship end of february... I really hope so since I already ordered and paid for it.

It looks like RME is not interested in providing GSIF_XP drivers for their Gigi96 series, but only for their cards that they have problems shipping....
Makes sense, doesn\'t it?

Yeah. It was interesting to discover that XP GSIF drivers are indeed out now for the DSP series - only problem is, like you said, that you can\'t buy the hardware.... huh.

they seemed to have been short as they were selling all their hardware output to steinberg (nuendo audiolink hardware is the hammerfall dsp components with different labels it seems).
I guess your best bet would be to ask any retailer if the items are in stock before you place an order, and to make clear that you only place the order if the stuff is definitly available within a few days time (to avoid being put on one of those waiting queues where you pay first, then wait til you\'re old and grey).

Markus, I am already put on that list http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif I\'ll hold out until end of this month, after that I\'ll decide if whether to buy something else. The Multiface does seem like a very cool solution though. I also like that firewire cable connection, so you can move your computer far away from the breakout.

Is the Multiface rackmountable? It looks to be a half rack module tin the pictures. I think it would be cool if I could put it in a rack.

It is not directly rackmountable, but you can mount it on a \'rackmount plate\' - then you can have two of them in one 19\" rack if you want.

Only one interface pr. card I am afraid. But heck, the Multiface is the expensive part, not the PCI interface http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif

That\'s a good idea. Just one question though. Can you use two external interfaces on one card? Or is it just limited to one box?
Thanks for the help

Richard, I got my Multiface today! So far, the only thing I have experienced with it is that GS crashed immediately when I touched a key on my synth to play a note http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif MSG32 crashed.... will use this evening to trouble shoot ..zzzz

Simon,
Excuse me for this delay but I have been out these days, plus I have to finish a large video scoring with WamiRack, because I donŽt want to install Multiface before that for avoiding possible problems...
So next week IŽll try my new card with everything and with my new mounted P4 1,8GHz (i850) with 800MHz 512MB Rambus memory!.
Have you got a solution about this horrible crash? Hope yes.

Richard, yes everything is working fine now. Getting better performance than from my Gina, but I can still get occasional note-\'freak outs\' and pops if I max out GS. The MSG32 crash appeared to be related to my new MIDI interface rather than the Multiface.

Simon, good news that all is working nice now! What is your midi interface? Is it parallell or USB. Most peolple say that parallell port is mor accurate.
After selling WamiRack and installing Multiface IŽll try a old Miditerminal64 (Egosys) with 2 in/4 out - SMPTE.
Maybe the new Miditerminal 4140 is better, overall W/4 in.

I use a MIDISPort 8x8 USB - unfortunately MIDIman \'forgot\' to either make or create serial drivers for it... I made a MIDI USB test, check out the HARDWARE forum http://www.northernsounds.com/ubb/NonCGI/images/icons/smile.gif
I bought the MIDISport to get rid of the MIDITerminal 4140 which casued loads of trouble, so I am glad I am not using that one anymore.
