View Full Version : "White Velvet"

Y'all,
I wrote "White Velvet" (http://www.alexandermusic.com/resources/WhateVelvet.mp3) this morning.
All of the instruments are GPO. I made extensive use of the violas in their lower range. Don't overlook the viola section in your own works. Their low notes can add a chordal lushness and sonority. Double-stopped or divisi violas combined with celli that are playing the root of the chord, can be very effective. It's a very full sound and involves only two sections of the orchestra.
My best to all,
Larry

Larry, you certainly seem to be prolific! I have trouble imagining being able to complete a project so quickly. You wrote this piece "this morning"--!
"White Velvet" made for very nice listening, I thank you for it.

...and I thank you, Brother Bowser for having a listen and then commenting.
Yes, I wrote it this morning. (11/10/06) Speed doesn't equate to quality. :p

Hi Larry,
I'm listening to White Velvet as I write this - very smooth, indeed! Is there a story behind the title?

Jim

No story except for the fact that I had previously written a string thing called "Red Velvet" and I just went from there. There was an old pop tune called "Blue Velvet" (I think that it was Bobby Vinton.) from years ago so I'm steering clear of that title. :)
Thank you for listening.

A sound pointer on orchestration, Larry; the
violas are vastly underused and neglected --
and you've certainly exercised them to a fine,
full richness in this!

When I was in music school, I was good friends with a violist. Through our friendship I really learned to appreciate it. Now I love its lovely mellow sound, particularly at the bottom of its range. Basically I'm in 100% agreement with you Larry. Thank you for sharing another lovely selection from the Alexander Catalogue!

Thanks, Mr. L.A. Man.
Violas and violists have been the butt of jokes for a long time and I really don't know why. It's a beautiful, "throaty", powerful sound and I enjoy composing for them.

Larry
Great work as usual, Larry!
A strong melodic storyline all the way through... (and in my favorite key!)
I agree with the comments on the Violas.. It's an instrument I had heard when I was young. I always loved the warm tones.
Very Nice!

A lot of folk find it weird for a tuba player to compose classical. But I don't. I have a biased opinion though. Class of '06, we do what we want.... our motto.

Yes, a nice different sound. It evoked a cold, snowy Russian landscape.

Hi Larry!
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to "White Velvet"! Also, the listen provided a nice lesson in writing for violas for me, Larry. As others pointed out, the sound is very lush and warm. I learn a lot when listening to your compositions/orchestrations. As always, well done, Mr. Larry! And Thank You! :)
Hope all is well with you. Know that there are warm thoughts and prayers your way as you continue the walk down Recovery Road.
Warmest regards,
Ted

Thank you, Theodore. You always have nice things to say and it's appreciated.
I am still taking radiation treatments and am having some un-good side effects but I'm gonna make it. Thanks for inquiring.
My best,
Larry
