Pro Tools + MAC

Apparently not a very good combo for GPO, which is surprising because when I voted, 50% of ALL responses were Pro Tools on MAC.

You\'d think they would want to give better support for this massive user base. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Allan,

There\'s a new update of Cubase available.
Besides many bugfixes, Steinberg introduced 3 new plugins, 2 instruments and an fx VST.

You can get a free update here: SX 2.2 Update (\"http://www.steinberg.net/Steinberg/Company/NewsItem.asp?id=3332&Langue_ID=7\")

I\'ve mostly used the included Cubasis VST 4.0, which has worked fine with some glitches, and also used PGMusic\'s Power Tracks Pro with limited success. I\'m currently saving up for Sonar 3. Oh, PC all the way (though not necessarily politically correct!).

SONAR 3 PE.

I use Finale for notation, usually *after* I\'ve finished a mockup in SONAR. (I import the MIDI file into Finale and then clean up the notation, add dynamics, articulations, expression marks, etc. etc. etc.).

Slap Hap Happy Birthday Alan! Here\'s a few to make ya feel even better;

You Know You’re Getting Older When;

\"Getting a little action\" means you don\'t need to take a laxative.

Adult diapers are actually kind of convenient.

All of your favorite movies are now re-released in color.

At cafeterias, you complain that the gelatin is too tough.

Conversations with people your own age often turn into \"dueling ailments.\"

Everything hurts and what doesn\'t hurt, doesn\'t work.

In a hostage situation you are likely to be released first.

It takes a couple of tries to get over a speed bump.

It takes longer to rest than it did to get tired.

It takes twice as long to look half as good.

Overture on the PC. Overture\'s midi editor allows me to do anything that needs to be done for reasonably good notation-based playback. Add some per patch rudimentary eq (at least treble and bass) and a separate reverb send(s??) in GPO\'s Kontakt player to go along with the existing pan and level controls and there\'d be no need for Cubasis at all.

# Auto alternation
AMP can replace the need for external midi tools for auto-alternation (eg VSL, GOS, GPO, SAM use transpose based alternation for up/down bows and multiple takes) Sonic Implants uses mod-wheel alternation mode for up/down bows, AMP can also be used to add Auto Alternation to other libraries which include articulations for alternative takes (eg. Peter Siedlaczek Advanced Orchestra, Miroslav Vitous etc)
# Legato mode
AMP can replace external midi tools for legato mode using sustain pedal switching systems (eg Garritan GOS & GPO).

Kinda funny, if a particular library could use alternating up and down bow strokes, it is obvious that it would have to be equiped with both types of samples. This \"new\" program (another one) would have the feature built in, so what\'s the use, MARKETING I SAY.... I feel like any company that brags about features that are already out and being used is probably not worth the trouble. It is particularly easy to copy someone else\'s product once it\'s out. Look at Digital Performer....., Pro Tools, and all these other programs would not be what they are if it weren\'t for MOTU (DP) designing and programming their original Performer program. I doubt seriously that there is any other program available that offers everything that Digital Performer does. I\'m not saying that these copy cats are not good useful programs. I think that most people think DP is way too complicated when they see it. Bah humbug, it\'s awesome! For midi and Digital audio, there is no other! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

BTW, the new synths and Mackie Extender control makes this free update well worth the download (broadband only!) I\'ve also found (and others have too) that the upgrade is rock solid. No crashes yet to report!

I\'m using \"Muzys\" on PC, there is no Mac offering. It is surprisingly well adapted to GPO. Using it with Overture SE, I don\'t really have any need for GPO Studio.

I don\'t think that it\'s for sale anymore. The developer seems to have fallen prey to some inner demons. Perhaps Gary should look into it as a possible additon to his offerings.

Cubase SX on PC

I wonder if the majority of GPO users are in the USA and this has resulted in the Sonar majority? This may signify that GPO hasn't penetrated Europe as much as the USA as I suspect that Cubase still reigns here. I have to admit that I trialled Sonar and was very impressed.... only relative familiarity (Cubase since Atari days) and a cheaper upgrade kept me with Steinberg.

As so often happens with successful companies, Steinberg has sat on its thumbs for too many years and Cakewalk are giving them a hard time I'm sure.

Only Gary knows the figures.....long term it may be premature to assume that Sonar users predominate.....just food for thought.

Just put in my order for Sonar 3 SE. I already have VSampler and some good reverb plugs, so PE wasn't an attractive buy for me for the extra money - not that I had the extra money, anyway... :p

I enjoyed trying GPO with the Tracktion demo and was almost set on getting that, but trying GPO again with the Sonar 3 demo was like realizing what I had always wanted for using GPO with. Wow. What a difference. With Cubasis, it's like I've been pulling a tractor trailer down the road with my teeth, and now I'm driving a Lambourghini! Okay, that's a bit of a stretch, but there really is quite a difference with how easy and fluid and "non-glitchy" Sonar is with GPO, especially compared to Cubasis. And it has video support, which would have been a huge help recently when I worked on some film scoring. Still, I'm very glad I had Cubasis to be able to use GPO at all until I could pick up Sonar.

Okay, it's still not the Lambourghini, because I've only got a 1.7 GHz and 768 RAM, but still... quite a step up. Oh, yeah... :D
