View Full Version : TBO, and.....

You all know about the TBO, the BIG Yam C7 piano!
With it's 93 samples/recorded note, it's not only the largest, but also the sampled piano with the most naturally dynamics on the market.

Ok, the TBO as we all know it was recorded, close, using a Neumann SM2 stereo michrophone to get the closeness and brightness but to keep it warm. Worked out pretty well I think....

But, there's another... (god, I feel like I'm in Star Wars...).
We also recorded a second stereo pair, using a pair of vintage Neumann U89 to capture a bit more ambience and a slightly mellower sounding piano.
Those samples (also 93 samples/note), has been lurking on my harddisk, untli now!
I've taken the plunge and handedtiting the +5000 samples (as always) and I'll soon be able to present the first demos of this other TBO perspective.

So, here we go, yet another piano! Hope you don't hate me too much....
I'm aiming to release the piano at the end of may, and there will be an introductional price.

Problem is that I don't know what the name the darn thing.... any ideas? Winner get's a freebie!

TOBO - The other big one
TBOS - The big one, sedated
TOAB - This one's also big
TOBT - This one's big, too
TRBO - The really big one (when sold together with TBO)
TBO2 - boring
OINK - I'll have to work on the acronym...

I'm not sure it's fair to ask us to name it until we've heard one or two songs using it. How about recording "Amazing Grace" with this new set of sample?

I've decided to call it "The Piano Within". Let us know what you decide to call it. :)

To eliminate a sequel-sounding name but still connect the products; perhaps simply TGO - "The Great One" would do?
Or maybe a german approach; "Die Grosse"? ;)
Just my late night rapid brainstorming; looking forward to hear some samples!

How about

"TBO Sister". That way its consistent with the white Grand and the White Sister. Which follows the similar sound format.

Worra, I just though of another one, TBS (The Big Sister). but I still like what I suggested in my earlier post better. The reason I still like "TBO Sister" more is because, it keeps it within the TBO family and its easy for identify it as such. Because I kinda see it as a name brand identification, obviously TBO, and the White Grand are well known, like, and respected libraries. Its kind of like a Mercedes Benz, and all variations of that car are still called Mercedes Benz C class, E class or what ever.

Ok, thats just my opinion

How about Hermitage?

And no this isn't a self admiration attempt, but a reference to the famous museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Grand, opulent, elegant, strong, with so many facets to choose from in 'tone', the world's biggest art gallery and a multi sampled piano have much in common!

I like it more straightforward, so what about this one:

TBO - mellow C7

Anybody should know what to expect from the samples after having read the name, therefore "mellow C7". On the other hand, you should keep the TBO (now "The Big Ones").

This would also shorten the omnipresent "What's the difference between piano xxx and yyy" threads ;)

This sounds like a very lovely library.

A name? Let's see. You describe it as "warm", "mellower", and also as "close" and retaining a kind of bright sound.

I have it! The Amber Grand ! :)

Why? Because amber suggests, at least to me, warmth, light, and a mellow glow. The library is derived from the TBO. Amber is a derivative, a fossilized resin really, but is also valued as a gem in its own right. And some of the best places for finding amber are along the coasts of northern Europe.

You have the White Grand. The Black Grand. So I think the Amber Grand fits in nicely with that tradition.

So the Amber Grand is perfect if you ask me.

Whatever you name it, I'm sure it will be wonderful.

Best of luck.

* The original TBO was/is a monster of a piano and the new one will be a monster too, just a little bit more chary - a girl monster piano. Let's call her OGRA. (One Grand to Rule them All)

* The softer big sister of the somewhat harsh capital "T" was called "D" by it's parents (adult letters are not overly creative). So naturally the name of TBO's big sister should be DBO (distant big one) - as a side effect that would definitly increase your sales in Franconia as they can finally pronounce the name ;) (perhaps you should also rethink the name of your company - on the other hand, SambleDeGG DBO doesn't sound so bad either...:) )

* One big advantage of a piano over a violin is that one can put a nice cup of tea on it while playing. And it's superiority over a traverse flute results from the fact that one has the mouth free all the time (for breathing and tea-drinking) . So the obvious name for such an instrument is TBOD (TBO Distant, also widely known as "tolerable biochemical oxygen demand" or "teapot" for close friends)

I never saw a cup of tea on top of a piano...

...but I know an organ player who chose the instrument because there's enough space for an ashtray and some bottles of beer on it :D

Hi.

Actually, I remember answering a mail about this. I think you had the Black Grand, right?
I answered that you should try the patch "6", that has only the softest velocity layers and let me know if this what something in line of what your after.
For a while, I had my mail sending out messages in HTML format. This made several of my mails ending up in the "spam" filter.
Could this be why you didn't recieve anything?

Soooo many great suggestions! I'm going to try to select one really soon!

I've been editing and fine tuning the new piano for some time now, and I'l really, really exited about it.
Yes, it's a monster! But, with it's 31 velocity layers and 93 samples/recorded note it gives such a tremendous dynamic response, just like a real piano should!
I'm also very, very pleased with the tone. It has warmth, but also a great presence that I so much like on a sampled piano.
IMOHO, this is the best piano I've done (so far.....)

IMHO, one of the reason you don't feel having soft mellow ppp under K2 his explained here :
http://www.northernsounds.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43776
Of course the other reason could be your keyboard setting / quality (not hard enough = you play only the high velocities)

All sampletekk pianos have soft and mellow ppp you can enjoy using the main patch (and I love that !). But under K2 you have to use corrected settings of velocity / volume curve. Raising relative volume of ppp samples make them sound warmer.

I've decided! I've choosen a name for the new piano.
Thank you all for giving me such great suggestions! It was very hard to choose, but the piano needs a name, so here it goes:

The new piano is going to be called 7CG - Seven Seas Grand and the winner is Sture!
A cool name that has a refrence in a great way to the piano model (C7) and also can be read "Seven Seas Grand". It also matches the cover.....

But, there's also another winner!
Naturally I'll also bundle TBO and 7CG, and that will be called:

TB2 and that was "invented" by ozDavo

Sture and ozDavo will get a free copy of 7CG when it's released
Would the two winners please contact me at per@sampletekk.com
