In other words, is a C# a completely different sample than the adjacent C, etc.?

It's more than that – it's several completely different samples. Each note is sampled at a number of different levels, morphing seamlessly. Also, the attack part is apparently separate from the sustain part. And so on...
I don't think any corners were cut on this one. ;)

Thanks. I want to use the Strad for 3 parts of a section in unison by playing one line with no transpose, one +1, and one -1 transposed, then bring the transposed notes back to pitch with pitch change. This only works well if the 2 transposed notes are actually different samples.
