View Full Version : Way O.T.: 7 days without a cigarette

Well I'm pleased with myself and Mrs N. - it is now a full week since either of us have smoked a cigarette.
Yes, we were beyond stupid to have taken up smoking in the first place, and then to have continued smoking into our late thirties - but at least we are trying to correct those mistakes now :)
Benefits to date......
1. We have saved a total of £70 / $130
2. We are experiencing a sensation when eating - I believe it is called taste ?!?
3. A little gentle exercise [:D] no longer leaves us totally out of breath.
Downsides....
1. The local corner shop is down on profits
2. I'm spending less time in my studio - 'coz that was where I used to do all my smoking!
3. I constantly have "the munchies"
Anyway - good luck to anyone else who has, or is thinking of, giving up smoking. You may not enjoy the experience, but you know that it makes sense :)

It costs $130 for two people to smoke cigarettes for one week in England?
$3,380 per person per year?
Think of all the musical instruments, sample libraries and software you can buy with that extra money in your budget.
Way to go.

Well, that is truly an accomplishment. Having gone through this myself in 1974, I know the problems you will experience. But if you have the perservance, which you must have in order to do anything with music, you will succeed.
I found that the 7th day was quite difficult, then it was not so bad until a month, when it was a problem for a while. The it was easy for about 6 months, for a short time. After a year, it was a little difficult for a few days. After that, clear sailing for the past 32 years. This is just to give you an idea of what to look forward to.
So congratulations, and good luck to you both.

Congratulations!! Really happy for you!!
Your studio gear also will thank you, smoke is not friendly with them. I remember when time ago i purchased a pair of used modems that used to be in an office enviroment... when i opened the package the cigarrette scent was so strong.
Take time to "purify" your studio enviroment, it will make you dont feel "reminiscens".

Congratulations! Keep it up! Statistically, your bodies will finish removing the damage you inflicted upon yourselves in about 20-25 year. So please do not start again!
You have my best wishes!

Congratulations, old chap!
I quite smoking on February 1, 1990 at 10:30 p.m. I still have "the urge" from time to time. Shortly after quitting, I could have licked an ashtray, so strong was my nicotine addiction. ;) :D
You won't regret giving up the coffin nails.

Larry

Congratulations to both of you! You may also want to check out your insurance policies. When I gave up tobacco, after one year I qualified for a different rate on my life and health insurance premiums. Another savings!
Good luck to you! John

)(~..... and never play the song: "Smoke gets in your (or is it mine) eyes" again. When do you both join the local choir? :D

Congrats to you both. I will follow your lead very soon.
I remember watching a documentary on Jazz, where the upright piano had an ash tray on the left side ( towards the bass clef ) for the convenience of the artist to smoke while performing ! ~|
Proper piano etiquite requires that the only thing you should set on a piano is sheetmusic, but a metronome is acceptable for first year provided you check the pads and they are in good condition.
Oh I just remembered that was for classical musicians, nevermind.:o :|:

UPDATE - it is now a full month since me or Mrs N. have smoked a cigarette.
Benefits to date......
1. We have now saved a total of £310 / $575
2. Everything tastes and smells nicer - food, our house, our clothes..
3. I guess we are on the slow road to regaining a certain level of physical well-being - although that is a long, slow process.
Next update will be when we hit the 6 month mark !!

Congratulations, N family!
Best thing you EVER did - I did it four or five years ago, and I think you are just coming up to the really smug bit. You know, when you see those guys taking a sneaky cigarette in the rain outside their office block and you can say, "Oh Purlease!"
I also remember the odd sensation of always having cash in my pocket again.
Enjoy!
Now, if I can only persuade my girlfriend...

Cor Blimey! You spent 310 quid a month on cancer tubes, old chap?
Brit cigs must be much more expensive than those here in the former colonies. For that kind of money they should serve you tea and crumpets each time you buy a package. :p :)

With kind of money they could flip houses for a living in small cities in the Southern states in America.

Well, in my part of the USA, the cost is about $40.00 per carton. Assuming a carton a week per person, the cost would be $4,160.00 per year. I do not know if that includes sales tax or not, and if not, then adding sales tax would raise the cost by $322.40. How anyone can afford such an outlay to damage their health is beyond me!

Congratulations for your decision.
I have quit smoking since year 2000. But, sometimes it is still hard to avoid smoking when relaxing. Also I have got 10 pounds at least in my weight since then.
Anyone inventing good-for-health cigarettes? :D

Thanks for the support and encouragement guys - it all helps.
Yes - smoking is a very expensive and dangerous hobby :)
The irony is, I have been more ill over the last few weeks than I can ever remember - coughing, headaches, sore throat, and incredibly bad sinus problems. It has left me unable to do music because (and I don't know how this works) certain sounds such as strings sound way off tune - like about a semitone - compared to vocals, brass and wind. Even listening to music on the radio is painful.
Anyway, I am sure that it is a passing thing that my doctor will be able to sort out.
Again - THANKS :)

...actually, I remember that happening to me as well the first year I quit smoking. Don't worry, it goes away after a while...and eventually you'll be able to breathe again!!!!!!!
...good luck, guys!

Chew on organic cinnamon sticks. Drop a small box in your shirt pocket. They even say it makes your test averages go up. :)

'Good. Remember that your power of choice for you and your loved ones is more than sufficient to overcome anyone who wants to make money off of your untimely death, and your family's loss.
Sure wish my wife would quit!

Preventing lung cancer, and emphesima from cigarettes may be easier when one considers that it is more important to live as long as one can to help those one loves than to let onesself be deceived into a false sense of control over life.
