The host I use for my web site is not user friendly. I'm using iPower and more than 90% of the time I cannot log onto my own web page or mail. Anyone have suggestions for more stable host?
Thanks in advance.
I've been using hostgator.com for about a year with no problems at all. I like the fact that they bill monthly, rather than annually, so if they don't perform, I can fire them without losing a lot of money.

I have absolutely nothing but praise for Crystaltech, with whom I have been hosted for about 6 years. They have a wonderful self-administration control page, and give you a lot of control for yourself. On the few occassions I've had a problem, emails were always returned within 15-20 minutes, and always solved the problem for me.
I've been using Bluehost for over a year
.. only for my meager needs so far, but they seem to be quite extensive.

Styxx, where are you from? (location)
anyway, a global hosting company which is good (but not cheap):

I've been happy with globat.com
The amount of space/bandwidth they give you is insane, and I've never had any problems with outages.

I Use 1and1.com
It is fantastic. SUPER cheap and is one of the biggest webhosting companies on the planet.
http://www.1and1.com/?k_id=13560015
The most inexpensive of the plans has 5 gigs of storage space and 250 gigs of monthly transfer rate!!!!!
I think they are having a sale right now - 1.50 per month for the starter. That is 50% off! I started a few months ago at $3 a month. I am very happy with them - never had outages, etc.

After reviewing several dozen hosts, examining uptime,
testing the responsiveness, expertise, and speed of
support, etc., I recently moved 17 of my sites over to a new
host. The details are currently noted in the upper right
of the page on www.DavidSosnowski.com
While I caution you can never predict the future performance
(or lack thereof) of any operation, *this* time I did the
research and the homework in spades... and so far, I'm
quite pleased.

Best one I've used so far was XAOS Media. Unfortunately, their service went down the tubes and now I'm on DreamHost and haven't had problems.
But, whatever you do, don't use HostOnce. Terrible host. I keep finding things missing (don't point out the problem in this statement).
Here are a few things to look for in a host.
1. Linux. Windows Hosting may look appealing, but Linux runs lighter and runs Apache. Also, *nix (Unix, Linux, BSD, etc.) run 80% of the internet.
2. Cheap. Enough said.
3. Space. The more the better if you are hosting music.
4. Bandwidth. The more the...just read number 3's explanation.
5. Reviews. Check webhostingtalk for this information.
6. Server Technology. Don't go for ASP and ASP.NET. My recommendation is PHP and MySQL. PHP and MySQL have vast arrays of software availible and it's quite easy to program your own using PHP.
7. FTP. Always use FTP or SFTP.
8. Security. HTTPS and SSL are nice. Yet, they are optional.
9. Mail. Webmail is a good choice in service. However, different clients can change experiences. SquirrelMail is a straightforward client yet I prefer Horde as it allows for modules.

LunarPages works great for me too, but wow - 1and1 prices and limits sure are impressive too!

While I think of it (gosh, is quoting yourself legal?)... for those
of you who have more than one website, look into what is
generally called "Reseller Hosting".
As in my case above... I'll use that for an example:
I have 17 sites. I have the $19.95 Reseller Hosting package.
That breaks down to about $1.17 a month per site for
hosting. And I still have plenty of room and bandwidth for
easily a dozen or more in addition.
10G of drive space and 100G of bandwidth is quite a lot;
an average site uses only a small fraction of that.
And since the backend is all typically handled via cPanel,
it doesn't take a rocket scientist to manage it.

Right now, I'm using a regular shared hosting plan on DreamHost. 200GB Space and 2 TB bandwidth a month. It still allows me to run multiple websites.
This reminds me, I have to renew a few domains.

I too use 1&1. They offer very good support and their Website Builder software is simple to use. If I can construct a website, anyone can do it. :D Also, their prices are hard to beat, in my opinion.

Hey Styxx,
One more vote from me for 1and1.com, I use them and host about a dozen sites, two or three of my own and then I rent out space to other artists/writers who need to host a small site.

Well, after all this talk and cheapness, I'm gonna check 1and1 out as well...I hadn't really entertained thoughts of a website, but this is so cheap that I can't pass it up.
Thanx to all for the recommendations!

Well, this one looks good to me. Check it out, and look over it's comparison chart.

Lots of space, lots of transfer bandwidth. Almost too cheap to be believable. This is my current consideration.

Hi Styxx,
Although you are probably suffering from hosting overload, I'd like to put a plug in for my hosting service. Well not mine obviously, but the one I use. Mac Highway (http://machighway.com/) is a medium sized company that has been in business for many years and appear to be very stable. They do use all Mac equipment, but are not limited to Mac customers. They'd be happy to take a PC guy's money. :D
They are big enough to certainly provide any service that you might need, but small enough to give you very personal support. They have wonderful tech support, either by phone or email. I've been with them now for over four years and to my knowledge my site has never been down because of them
I even use their POP mail and get almost no spam.
They have monthly as well as yearly plans. I even bothered them for a lot of extra help while I was designing my site and was never charged for it.

Thanks Karl and nice to hear from you again. So, is this web host for Mac's only or will the take PC users? Right now I am in the process of learning the options one has with all the new tech for computer lately. I just sold my PC and most of my home studio hardware last week, so it looks like a while and have time to decide Mac or PC. Actually, I'm leaning toward Mac.
Karl Garrett

Yes they certainly will host PC owners. From their perspective it doesn't make a difference. I believe they also have a PC tech there. They are a real class outfit, and as I said, I get no spam. It's wonderful. I've been so happy with the service that I just upgraded my account to the next level. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the features except for a daily breakdown of hits to my site etc. It's not easy to own a web hosting company now. The competition is unbelievable, and everyone seems only to look for the cheapest. These guys "rock". Can a classical guy say that? :D
Styxx, if you can at all swing it, get a Mac. Last month I went up to New York with a friend to that really cool Apple store and helped him get a new Mac Pro. I'm so freaking jealous. This is such a kickass machine. To see OSX and Windows XP running on the same screen side by side, and being able to cut and paste from one to the other and such is just mind blowing. Not to mention that OSX is everything that Vista dreams of being, and who knows what Leopard will be like.

All I know is iPower out right down right stinks! I've been trying to access my web site for changes and can't get in. Called the SOB's and got some fruitcake who claimed they fixed the problem, gave me a new administrative password, but no go!
I am going to transfer my domain to one of these suggestions. Thank you all for your advice and insight.

Well, I got 1and1...signup was smooth and I will be building the site as time permits. Can't believe how low the cost is! Setup seems to be pretty well foolproof as well.

I have somewhere around thirty sites -- only 17 of them are on that
particular host.
When it comes to names, my personal fav is CodeBelly. Very classy.
