I'm considering trading in my Sibelius 4 for Finale 2008. Yet, first, I want to try a demo of Finale 2008 before I switch.

I don't mean to ask a redundant question, but where is the MB/CB library and the installer for human playback in 2007?

I'm considering trading in my Sibelius 4 for Finale 2008. Yet, first, I want to try a demo of Finale 2008 before I switch.

I have only used the Sibelius demo. I did not like the sound of their insturments samples. Things that are common software command found in Microsoft Office suite function in Finale and I've learned to do things because I knew how to do them from using other software like Microsoft Word. The sound quality of Finales "Softsynth" sounds is excellent. This is really a very good engraver quality notation software. It is really easy to learn.

Samantha,

Not to make you change your mind, but the Sounds in the Sibelius Demo aren't the sounds you would get if you purchased Sib 5. the sounds come with the purchase, but would make the Demo enormous in size; what you are hearing is your GM sounds that come with any PC. I realize you are a Finale user, and that '08 is in your future; I just wanted to make certain that you knew that what you heard in the Sib Demo wasn't the real Sib product.

any idea what they used to create the demos on the Sibelius website?
I listened to some audio demos using Sibelius on their website, and was NOT impressed.

I've been a Sibelius user for just over 2 years now and I've decided to move to Finale. There are several reasons including what is being examined here - Finale's Human Playback just cannot be beat. I see it as not only improving my the quality of my music, I see it doing so and requiring half of the time I now spend tweaking.

Sibelius is a great product and if I am sure the sounds that will be offered from Garritan will be exactly the same between the two products. I don't have the scoring needs others have, I just want to be able to see a decent score and have the music play back really well. Human Playback will allow this.

A $200 crossgrade is not cheap, but I think it is going to be worth it. :)

I expect MM are sorting their 'home' orders first. I expect international orders will be sent later so I expect I shall have to wait a while longer.

Kevin,

It does look like the instruments are the same set as in Sib 5 from what I can see. I'm sure someone will chip in and correct us if this isn't the case.

Bill,

I've probably misunderstood your question but Finale 2007 has no Marching Band and Choir voices. It has instruments from GPO and JABB. Also, Human Playback is installed when you install Finale 2007. I'm not aware that HP can be installed separately but I could be wrong; I've never tried to install HP separately.

Michael,

I meant "where is the Garritan Marching Band and Concert Band Library"? I swear I have come to this forum almost every day since I ordered it last September, hoping that I would see of its imminent release,,,,, Patience is wearing thin; and now a Finale 2008 upgrade, by far the earliest it has ever been. And where is the HP fix that was promised for 2007 Mac Intel users...... Ugh....

Kevin,

I'm sure you'll be pleased with this decision. $200 isn't cheap, but it's a lot better than the full $500-600 price. When you get first get Finale, I know it's boring, but tatke the time to go through the tutorials. It'll save many countless hours of frustration if you learn the basics this way.

It's very different from Sibelius. You need to choose different tools for different operations. However with 2008, they have combined some of the tools. Be sure to visit the Finale forum, http://forum.makemusic.com/. You'll see that Finale users are very vocal about complaints that they have, yet they remain Finale users. And Robert Piechaud's Human Playback simply is amazing.

The included sounds with Finale are similiar in scope to Sibelius, but not exactly the same. I believe that some of the Sibelius sounds were originally part of the Silver/Gold collection. All of the Finale samples come from Garritan. (not including Finale's softsynth).

I recently got the announcement from Finale for the 2008 upgrade. They are also offering the FULL Garritan Concert and Marching Band for only $199 (if you own Finale) - compared to Garritan's own price of $239. This is not a smaller set (Finale 2008 will include one of those on its own) - this is the FULL Concert and Marching Band product. I pre-ordered Concert and Marching Band from Garritan in March, am a Finale user, and I am hoping Garritan will offer a rebate or something.

Finale 2008 has just arrived at my door and is presently burning my hands... its little eyes are boring through me, as it psychicly demands "install meeeee.... INSTALLLLL MEEEEEEEEEEEEE NOWWWWW!!!!"

Should I?

I am wondering, this Finale 2008 is supposed to be finally working with the new Kontact Player 2 for full GPO and J&BB, yes?

So, where exactly do I get these new players for GPO and J&BB?

I have made a "security" duplicate copy of both GPO and J&BB (new folders called "/GPO OLD" and /JABB OLD" from which my trustworthy Finale 2006 can readily identify the appropriate .NKS files and samples).

Hi Samantha,

I also pre-ordered it when I upgraded to Finale 2007. Unless you didn't own Finale prior to getting 2008 and preordered the Marching Band library at full cost ($239), I doubt you will get anything rebated other than their $199 offer. I know, it seems since we ordered it and expected it while Finale 2007 was the "kid on the block" we should get an additional "kickback" since we've waited for the library through two cycles of Finale. You can always cancel the order through Garritan and purchase it through MakeMusic if you ordered it at full price through Garritan.

That was quick!

I think I have a fair wait. Even after they send mine it'll take about a week or longer to reach me.

Ah well.

With all due respect, I certainly hope you are (the only one).

If a software company spends the time and money to add new features to an already useful product, they deserve to be paid for that effort. If one does not want the new features, they don't have to upgrade.

And if you think $99 is not a reasonable upgrade price, I'll bet you don't use any Adobe products (https://store1.adobe.com/cfusion/store/index.cfm?store=OLS-US&view=ols_cat&catType=PRODUCTS&nr=0#loc=en_us&rangeUpper=6%2C0%2C65%2C0&HTMLVerRedirect=true&returnURL=%2Fcfusion%2Fstore%2Fhtml%2Findex%2Ecfm% 3Fstore%3DOLS%2DUS%26event%3DdisplayCatalog%26cata logOID%3D27807&store=OLS-US&view=ols_cat&catType=PRODUCTS&nr=0&viewName=Adobe%20Store%20%2D%20North%20America&pageNotFound=0)!

I finally found the missing files that allowed KP2 to "see" my full versions of GPO and J&BB.
so now from the wizard I can load anything I want. it's wonderful.

lots of playing around with old files, a bit of improvising with new things, and not a single crash or bug or hickup. so far so good.

I AM noticing that the GPO sounds aren't quite the same with KP2.
Volume doesn't ahve to be set quite as low in the Finale mixer as it did in previous versions (we always set the main volume in the mixer at around 65 else it gave lots of distortion).
