A Quick Sonar 6 Question

When setting up a new composition in Sonar 6 would it be better to open a template with no tracks and let the tracks be created when I add KP2? I've been in the habit of opening a Midi tracks template and then when I insert KP2 I wind up with an ungodly and unmanageable set of tracks. What do most of you do when you start a new composition? Any way I can ease the workflow is what I'm looking for.

I'm thinking that if I let Sonar 6 create the tracks when I insert KP2 that all of the proper routings will be taken care of. Isn't this correct?

Wow this is a good question. I've used templates and not. Coming up with a general workflow in this new (to me) world of software sound sources has been trial and error here, and I am usually loading very large ensembles. Anybody's thoughts and contributions on this subject will be well appreciated!

I've always wanted to set up some nice templates for myself, but it always seems to be more trouble than I want to work with. Usually I start by opening an old work that has a similar instrumentation, and re-saving it as a new project.

Well, I do want to set up a template. However, this is my first project with CoMB and I don't have any prior projects to steal a template from. :(

I use templates. Because it's kinda tedious and boring to set up,
I'd recommend doing a little bit each day (say, one orchestra section).
In less than a week you'll have a complete orchestra template set up to
your liking.

If I'm doing something smaller, I generally start with no tracks. Then
I Insert the K2 vst with just the first Synth Output selected. This creates
one audio track and one Midi track.

Then I Clone the Midi track as many times as I need and update the Channel
setting for each of the tracks.

Well, I was trying to find a way around having to set everything manually but it sounds like I'll have to. I can then save the setup as a template for future uses, I guess. <sigh>

Really, that's what I've been doing. I also do what SkySaw does - wipe the data from a previous work and use that. I sometimes save that as a template (named something like "MY KP2 Concert Band," or "MY Basic Woodwind Quintet"). Then I add or subtract or change instruments/features as I need them. When KP2 came out I had to re-do some of my templates which was a pain but well worth it when I open a new project and can just "start." Now that I have CoMB I am building new templates and, being a GPO owner as well, I am having to decide if I will include the Trumpet Sections from CoMB as well as the Overlays/Players from GPO. Decisions, decisions! But part of the process.

Coming up with those intial templates is a job, though. If you find an easier solution I'd really like to find out!:)
